One of the many many things I like here in S'pore is , that you never know what to expect when going to different places. I don't personally even want to know every detail and do some deep research beforehand about the places where we are going. Thus far we have never disappointed about anything. This morning the feeling after yesterday's hard pedaling was surprisingly good, let's not talk about my reddish back.. so we decided to pay a visit to Singapore Botanic Gardens and spend a lazy Sunday afternoon there. The Botanic Garden is said to be one of the island's biggest and nicest park and I am not wondering why. Whole the area was HUGE, green and lush and so close to the central city that we even walked there.(crazy Finnish people like locals ... read more

To tell you the truth, we didn't know that much about the island beforehand. Just that Pulau Ubin is one of the last rural areas to be found in Singapore. Going there was exiting, because Pulau Ubin is an island off the northeastern coast of Singapore we needed to take a ferry boat from Changi Village jetty terminal. And which kind of boat it was! Far away was luxurious and glory, but still so comfortable and easy. There was no tight schedules in the terminal. Every boat was waiting as long as there was 12 passengers on the boat, but practically ferry was going almost every five minutes and the prize was 2,5 SGD. What about the island then? Immediately when arriving there the friendly and hot (yup, I burned my back) atmosphere surrounded us. No ... read more

Me and my new friend Singapore have started to come along together pretty well. There's nothing special, not yet, that would make me irritated or frustrated. Rather to be irritated, I'm amazed and speechless still many times a day. Yesterday we went to see some movie, and this theater was (if it's even possible) better than the previous one where we were last week. Whole the building was made for the movies: 12 halls and 9 levels all somehow connected to movies, there was e.g. a specific playing areas for groups or individuals, area were was possible to rent board games, one huge saloon to play with the computers ( which there was about 40!) , huge screens with soft sofas in front of them, small shops for any kind of stuffs which can be imagined ... read more

Our destination for the crazy halloween night was Zouk, the coolest night club in Spore like the locals had told us. Entrance was expensive (33 singaporean dollars) but it included two drinks. Also the term "bar queue" got the new meaning.. With the costume the entry for the club was free and we saw amazing outfits from the Jokers and superman's to geisha's and teddy bears. There was also one banana. Some people had really made an effort to get in. But like it came out, there were also two bars next to each others! and of course we were in an wrong queue.. For us it was same, but our poor friends need to pay the same amount with the costume they had paid only for this Halloween evening. The decoration in the bar was ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Little India October 27th 2008

If I had tried to imagine the place full and packed of people eating and hanging out on the streets beforehand, I wouldn´t have guess which kind of mess it can be. All the streets were congested and full of people ( read men). We tried to walk through Festival Arcade were they sell everything from sweets to wooden statues and everything between. For us those masses of people were just too much to handle and get along with. We still has our own New Year's party and couple weeks after that The Chinese New Year. Oh well, at least we have realized properly that the year has changed. That was Little India yesterday, so we saved ourselves to movies. And which kind of movie.. The Burn After Reading, the best movie for ages! I would ... read more

Today was my friend name day and we were just walking aimlessly without any clue ( or actually we had some) which we should do. That took us past Prinsep Street and we chanced upon this : MANGA KISSa, Japanese Style Comic Cafe. My friend went crazy when seeing it so there was no doubt should we go in or not. The Cafe was adorable and really different from those where we have been visiting this far. MANGA KISSa was full of manga books, actually there was more than 16,000 comics packed within the 180 sq meter space. There’s around 13,000 Japanese manga and the rest are either Chinese or English translated manga. There was also free drinks and other magazines too, which suited us more than fine. Like my friend enthusiastically explained to me, this ... read more

I am still as amazed as I was at the very first days in Singapore. Our lecturer said quite eloquently that this is the smallest island in Asia ( yes, we all know it is not actually the smallest..) but meanwhile there is the biggest number of hotels, enterprises and other leisure activities in the same island. In Singapore one can do a lot of things in a very short time. And almost every human groups are represented here. In our own are Hindus are preparing themselves to Deepavali. In cases there is someone interested in what does this festival really means I try explain it shortly. Deepavali, or Diwali is a major Indian festival, and a significant festival in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. Many legends are associated with Diwali. Today it is celebrated by Hindus, ... read more

"ABOUT SINGAPORE JURONG GARDENS: Built in 1975 and designed by Prof. Yuen-chen Yu, a well-known architect from Taiwan, the Chinese Garden’s concept is based on Chinese gardening art. The main characteristic is the integration of splendid architectural features with the natural environment. The Chinese Garden is modeled along the northern Chinese imperial style of architecture and landscaping." Except of The Chinese Garden, there was Japanese,- and Bonsai Gardens, which cost an estimate $3.8 million to build. This 5,800 sq meters garden with Suzhou-style buildings and landscape houses a collection of over 2,000 bonsais imported from China and other parts of the world. Those Gardens were like a paradises in the middle of the city. That peace and quietness. The day was sunny and pretty hot. Here in Singapore is said to be three seasons : hot, ... read more

In a nutshell, I'm amazed. If somebody thought the level of the schools is good in Finland, well, let's put it like that, in Asia, or actually here in Singapore, the level of the education is great. The teachers are professionals and they know what they are talking about. It also came obvious why do people need warm clothes here. The classes, or auditoriums are freezing, or more like, the air - conditioning systems are so effective that you need to hold your notes tightly if you don't want to loose them. Anyway I don't feel so"schoolgirlish" in the mornings when catching the metro and then hurrying to the monorail which leads us over the sea to the Sentosa Island. The school itself it's disappointment neither. Cozy and comfortable, doesn't look like a school at all ... read more
