After Cambodia we headed to Saigon, Vietnam The bus ticket was ridiculously cheap, US 7$ per person from Phnom Penh to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh city). Everything went OK when travelling to Vietnam. Bus dropped us before the border and we walked to passport control. Luckily we realised early enough our passports were eligible for free 15-day visas so we did not need to apply Vietnam's visa at all! It seems someone had done something right when speaking about politics. Saigon is the largest city in Vietnam and at a first glanse it seemed to be FULL of crazy motocyclists and bikers. When we arrived there at once the buss stop's location was excellent! No need to start those endless negotiations with taxi/tuk tuk/ motorcycle drivers. We just walked in to district one and got hitted ... read more

The next logical destination after Siem Reap was obviously Phnom Penh, the capital and largest city of Cambodia. Although I personally liked Khmer food which consists of curries, stir fried vegetables, rice, noodles and soups a lot, my stomach strongly disagreed with me, and we were not only avoiding the street food but also eating in pretty good places. Did not make any difference. During our staying in Cambodia (almost a week) the food was pretty much a problem for me ( and also for Anniina later on...) The buss trip from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh was surprisingly short, only four hours! Whole the traveling thing was kindly organized by our No Problem hotel in Siem Reap, and cost almost nothing. Luckily the bus was cozy and comfortable, otherwise I would have felt even more ... read more

Our great great holiday season (after half year hard studying in Singapore) started from Bangkok, where we were 26th of February. We spent couple of nights there just chilling out and calming down, preparing for our "Grand Tour". Bangkok was, once again wonderful. I don't even know exactly why but somehow that 'City of Angels" appeals to me. The following blog entries I will post without pictures. I am so sorry for that but it would take me for ages for me to get the pictures downloaded, trust me I have tried. So I will add the photos later on. (Just a little reminder for those who want to be in contact with me; my Singaporean phone number is not working anymore so please use my "old" one if somethings turns out:) Moving to Cambodia. Asia » Singapore » Little India February 10th 2009

Something odd and strange was happening 8th of this month in Little India, which occurred to be a Sunday, the full moon day in the month of Thai. The 'thing' was called Thaipusam Festival which celebrates the birthday of the Hindu deity Subramaniam when Hindus show the sincerity of their faith. During this period, these men called devotees pray for divine help and make vows. When their prayers are answered, they fulfill their vows. To do this, the devotees had pierced their cheeks, tongue, face and other suitable body parts with sharper objects never seen. Next his friends/relatives had loaded a kavadi on their shoulders. The kavadis were a large metal frames attached to their bodies using a horrific array of hooks and spikes which were almost too painful to even watch! Immediately when I saw ... read more

This park was a first one I wasn't so interested to go beforehand. However we had bought so called ' Park Hopper tickets' which allowed us to go to Singapore Zoo, Night Safari and Jurong Bird Park during one months time, so of course we need to go there, no matter what :D The following text is taken straight from Newsasia Singapore's website: 'Jurong Bird Park is a 20.2 hectare open-concept park. It is the largest in the Asia Pacific and one of the finest bird parks in the world. Jurong Bird Park, collection of more than 8,000 birds from 600 species, offers visitors an experience that is entertaining as well as educational.' Oh well, there were the birds, more than enough and actually whole the park was much more nicer and bigger than I had ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Singapore Zoo February 1st 2009

We got an old Finnish friend far from Hong Kong to visit with us. She had just finished her exchange semester in HK and was on her way aroun South - East Asia passing by our beloved Singapore. It was a time to do some touristic things here and Singapore Zoo together with the Night Safari seemed to be a good option for us all. I personally had a little doubts towards Zoo, not that I wouldn't like animals, vice versa, I really like and appreciate them, I just dislike the Zoo concepts in general. Years ago I have visited in Kolmården Zoo in Sweden, which I pretty much liked, animals were more like free there. But after that I have been visiting couple Zoo's I don't want to even mention, so horrible they were, and ... read more

Hahaha, don't worry, I'm not at home yet! Somehow I just got the urgent feeling, that while being here I still do want to share with you some pictures and show some places very close and special to me about my home country. Finland may have many faces, interesting contrasts, such as the four seasons, different landscapes and glorious variation on the themes of forest and water, where the comforts of modern life are never far away. It is indeed my home country which has affected me to the most. It's a bit sad I realized that I, in fact don't own so many pictures from there, which is an old story though. I see those places and things almost every day, so why to take a picture? For this I should make an effort when ... read more

We were little bit late to see Singaporean Chinese New Year Celebrations at Chinatown since Chinese new year 2009 falls on 26th of January, 2009 and we were delayed because of our Bintan's trip. Luckily the decorations and other things were still there. The Chinese New Year is celebrated as the symbol of spring's celebration and as Singapore is said to be a place largely influenced by the tradition and culture of China and Chinese people, The Chinese New Year holds a special significance in here. We were strongly recommended to go there and see that area. Actually whole the January there has been signs here and there that the Chinese new lunar year is coming closer and closer. Shopping malls have turned to be places full of flowers and pink and red colors. At school ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Riau Archipelago » Bintan January 26th 2009

I really don't have slightest idea how I'm going to be able to describe these previous days in Bintan Island, so overwhelming experience that was. We were looking for a true getaway, and that's what we got, indeed. Bintan Island is part of the Riau Islands province of Indonesia and is located less than 40 kilometers from Singapore. We took a ferry to going there, and instead of other travellers who stayed in Bintan Resort's area, we were looking for Bintan's best kept secret. With a taxi, it took almost one hour to reach Mutiara beach guesthouse located on island's east coast, where the Bintan's best beach Trikora, was said to be. When arriving there the staff members came to greet us with friendliness, from the beginning it came clear this was totally different place compared ... read more

If we just had known it beforehand which world we were stepping into when moving to Singapore. Little India, our new home area was anything else except a disappointment when we arrived, and I still found it as a one of the most exciting, colorful and attractive places to visit and stay in Singapore. We luckily have a chance to live there everyday;) With this entry I would like to share with you some facts about this area we have been living these months as I realized not so many photos are yet taken or posted from this area. Basically Little India is, as the name promises, the center for the large Indian community in Singapore. Although I have never been in India, I could suggest that this area here is a rather sanitized version of ... read more
