Corruption
Until Africa cleans up its corruption act, it cannot be a main player in the global field. Of course its not the only country .... by any means, just so much more visible & accepted :-( Hope you have a wonderful safari. Stay safe

Sobering
Quite a sobering read Marty. One has to be sceptical and it seems corruption/ lack of governance is just bubbling under all the good work and good work is often hiding behind 'religion'. I don't think I could have been quite so self controlled when the bill came! As you say it is the kids who are impacted. The work Monica has done I am sure is over and above what the average volunteer would do. Very well done

Arusha and Safari
Enjoy your time at the Masai camp and have fun on the safari, so much too see and spot. When you get back to BC we have to try to connect in person. Have a safe journey. Edith

wow!
I'd love to comment on each of your adventures in this blog, Marty, but fear there is not enough space. Your writing brings us right into your reality, good and bad, and at times we are happy you two are doing this and not us! Wonderful/terrible experiences! From Monica's illness to the corruption (yes, sadly, all over the world) to your Kilimanjaro trek and the orphanage. Well done, you two! By the time you are back on line (and we'll want to read all about the safari!), we should be in tame Thailand. Happy New Year guys!

Schools money ,and Christmas
Glad to hear you two are doing well and learning the ways of Africa . The hike up to the base of Kilimanjaro would be so cool ,enjoy. Just wanted to wish you both a Merry Christmas and a Happy new year

reply to yours
Aha! We should have known your positivity here and there was diplomatic, Marty! Suggest to Monica the quote you must follow is "This Above All, To Thine Own Self Be True"

telling it like it is
great blog entry with fascinating pics. Love your honesty, Marty. To be truthful, after our volunteering stint in Nicaraguan classrooms, I understand your dilemma. Looking forward to safari adventure...

telling it like it is
Actually I had to re-write this entry. Monica felt I was too critical and too negative. So, in reality, this is the diplomatic copy.

what an education!
How long are you staying in/near the Orphanage? What an education! Fascinating, horrifying, wonderful---in the original sense of wonder---life changing. thanks for sharing.

African serenity
Love those bus ride and bus depot descriptions...they sound very familiar! And how lovely you are at this serene retreat. We read your writing and study photos with much anticipation. Keep 'em coming, M&M!

Period of Adjustment
wondered whether you head brought your black hat, Marty. You did! Love reading about your adventures and can identify with those buses and chickens and heat and smiling faces. Don't mind telling you we are enjoying your writing but I can say for myself, I'm quite content to be in Canada with snow falling softly outside. Are we still on the same earth? Keep on writing and stay in touch. Hugs to you both, Heather and Norm

Hello!!
Yay, you are back to travel blogging! I was so sad when your TravelPod site went away - I loved hearing about all your travels...sounds like Tanzania will be a big adventure - I look forward to living vicariously through you guys! Nothing much exciting happening here - planning a weeklong Baja trip but trying to stick with my job for a few more years so I can 'retire' and get back on the world traveler plan :) all the best, Sue

Very interesting start to your adventure. Great reading, keep 'em coming!! Tell Monk I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to video chat before you left Gabriola. Maybe if you have good internet connection we can try while you are travelling. Take care and be safe you guys. Love to you both!! Karen
