BRUSSELS It was a one and half hour train ride to Brussels from Paris on the Thaly's train. I finally used my first travel day of my 15-day Eurorail pass good for first-class seating and first-class it was indeed. Comfy seating complete with a complimentary meal, drinks, and wi-fi on board. I was in heaven. Were my train accommodations on the rest of my backpacking trip going to be this nice? So far nothing has come as close, but the train systems in Europe are great in general so I really can't complain. I arrived in Brussels in the the early evening still thinking about Paris, but glad to know that I wasn't leaving the French language behind as the southern part of Belgium is French speaking. I'll get more into that in a second. At ... read more

So there's a ton of places I've been to and things I've done between now and my Paris blog, but I couldn't hold off on sharing what is by far the most amazing thing I've ever experienced. HANG GLIDING. Yes, that's right folks. Today, I ran off a cliff and went flying through the air, hovering the Swiss Alps over the town of Interlaken in Switzerland. I woke up this morning and booked a tandem hang glide with a 1:30pm pick-up at my hostel. I was trying to delay my adventure until tomorrow to build up my courage for at least another 24-hours, but the reception lady encouraged me to do it today since it was a nice clear day, and the weather may not be so nice tomorrow. Considering her advice and that tomorrow would ... read more

DAY 2 I got up early to get a head start on my first full day in Paris. I joined the Regard family downstairs for breakfast, finally meeting Daniel, Lucile's father. I was treated to a crispy chocolate croissant and fresh brewed coffee. On my way out Lucile accompanied me into the city taking me to see the famous Catholic Catherdral, Notre Dame. Another gorgeous church in Paris. We made our way inside to marvel at the French gothic architecture, but were limited to the perimeter not to disturb the service taking place at the same time. It felt odd and a bit rude snapping photos and gawking during worship. After Notre Dame, Lucile escorted me to the Catacombs and went on her way to school to get some studying done. The Catacombs is a ... read more

DAY 1 From London, I took the Eurostar "Chunnel" train to Paris which travels across the English Channel via an underwater tunnel. It began as a peaceful train ride as I enjoyed the views of grazing cows and sheep on the open fields, and every few miles or so little towns sprung up with small cottage homes and always a church in the city center marked by its high steeple roof top. But my peace was interrupted by the couple sitting catacorner from me talking so loud that everyone on the train car knew their entire Paris itinerary, hotel room and credit card information included. It wasn't so much the both of them, but the girlfriend whose volume was turned up way too high. It didn't help either that they were enjoying themselves over not ... read more

DAY 3The Swiss girls went on their way to enjoy the rest of their holiday. I headed off for more sightseeing on an absolutely gorgeous clear day. I guess I was quite lucky as the weather is typically otherwise during this time of year. My first stop was to the Parliament & Big Ben for a more upclose view, Westminster Abbey next door, then my last stop at Buckingham Palace and the impressive changing of the guards. Make sure you watch the video in my playlist. After a long day of walking I was pooped and starving. On my way back to Shah's I decided to make dinner for us. My first thought was to bust out my mad filipino skills and make chicken adobo, but by the time I got back to Camden, the Asian ... read more

DAY 1 So I hopped on an American Airlines red-eye flight from NYC to London's Heathrow airport. Dinner was served on board, but it was already 1am, so I declined. I knocked out most of the way and pleasantly woke up to smell of coffee & crossaints that I couldn't pass up. When we landed it was already 11am in the morning -- which was 5 hours ahead of NYC. Talk about jet lag. Ahhh, after 6-hours we landed on European Soil. The weather wasn't much different from when I left Rochester - gray, cold, & and it looked like it had just rained. Bummer. Anyway, got my bags and made my way to the "Tube" or Underground (subway) Picadilly Line to Kings Cross station in Central London to meet Shah, my first international Couchsurfing host. ... read more

Okay -- so before I entertain you with my London blog, I decided to go into more detail about Couchsurfing since most of you are unfamiliar with the concept and I'm going to reference it quite frequently from this point forward. Up to now, I've kept the concept pretty vague as its a bit detailed to explain and not easy to grasp first-hand, but I'm opening up in sharing what Couchsurfing is all about in hopes that you'll gain a full understanding, and maybe an appreciation of it, as it is the foundation of my travels and experiences throughout Europe. First, let me familiarize you with some abbreviations I will use often. So PAY ATTENTION people! CS = Couchsurfing CSer = Couchsurfer As a couchsurfer, you participate in one or more of the following ways: Host- ... read more

ROCHESTER Okay, so I made a pit stop on the East Cost on my way to Europe to visit some old friends, Molly & Melissa, in Rochester, NY. It was quite a change arriving in 40 degree weather versus the sweltering 90+ degree heat of Southern California. The air was cool and crisp, trees everywhere with their leaves shades of yellow and orange - Autumn had officially arrived. It was nice to get away from the busy fast-paced life of LA. The highways in Rochster are 2-lanes, and going 45 mph is considered "traffic". Houses with basements are common and big enough to build a family game room, and there are no wood fences separating neighbors. I was officially on the East Coast. You can immediately feel the history of Rochester with its Victorian style homes ... read more
