I see my path, but I don't know where it leads. Not knowing where I'm going is what inspires me to travel it.

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Interlaken January 1st 2009

I said farewell to Germany, headed south to Switzerland. Well you already know the good time I had in Interlaken from my hang gliding adventure. But I was left with an adrenalin rush and was itching for more. Back at the hostel I celebrated my survival in the lobby bar while contemplating plans for my last full day in Interlaken. Going on a hike seemed like a good idea and so I asked Tomas, the bartender, if he could recommend something close by. Conveniently he pointed at the mountain just outside the window. He proceeded with directions to “Walk down the road, head in the direction of (somewhere that started with an "H")...only an hour hike up to the top…when get there take the train back down, its better on the knees…no more than 2 hours ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich December 31st 2008

Sorry for the hiatus. As most of you know, I'm back in the States. Six months to be exact - and quite frankly, I wish I was still wandering aimlessly overseas. I've been busy settling back in the US now living in Seattle. BUT my heart is still in Europe. The good thing is I still have Italy, Spain, & Portugal to cover and more stories not to be left untold...Its good to be back in blog mode. Anyway..so after Austria, I headed to Bavaria, the southeast State of Germany to the town of Munich - home of Ocktoberfest. No couchsurfing again for me this time. Wombat's Hostel would be my shelter the next few days thanks to an old friends recommendation as "the" place to stay. Wombats did live up to my friends praise. Plenty ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg December 30th 2008

After Vienna, I enjoyed a scenic train ride westward along the base of the northern edge of the Eastern Alps - a colossal sight and quite a contrast from the flat plains I was used to seeing traveling through the Northwest part of Europe. By this point I was three weeks into my trip and had been go-go-go since I started back in London. I was a bit drained from all my hustle and bustle and needed some time to myself to relax and unwind. I set my sights for two days in Salzburg, Austria the birthplace of Mozart, headquarters of Red Bull, and the scenic backdrop of the Sound of Music movie. There was obviously no couchsurfing for me this time but instead I checked myself into a single room at the Hotel-Pension Adlerhof. I ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna December 29th 2008

Austria wasn't originally on my itinerary, but when I stayed with Ruben in , I met a friend of his from Austria who stirred my interest in the country thus my decision to visit. So I said auf wiedersehen (good-bye) to Germany and headed east to Vienna, home to classicial music, the delectable wienerschnitzel, adorned architecture, and crazy drivers. MY CS HOSTTarek was his name. He picked me up at the train station accompanied by Laura, a CSer from Munich he was also hosting. I was pleasantly surprised to be picked up by car as it had been three weeks since I last set foot in one during my stay in Paris. Initially I was excited to once again have the "get-in and go" convenience of a car versus my more involved routine of buying a ... read more

RHINE RIVER CRUISE I left Cologne in the early morning headed south to Frankfurt to meet up with Sheila, a CS friend from Long Beach also doing some traveling through Europe. I hopped on a train as usual but an hour into the trip I ditched the train in the town of Koblenz. My plan was to catch a 6-hour ferry boat along the Rhine River to experience the scenic route of medieval castles along the way, but things didn't go quite my way. When I arrived in Koblenz I was pressed for time with only 45 minutes until the ferry was scheduled to depart. The ferry landing wasn't exactly near the train station and I imagine it would not have been too long a walk, but I didn't want to risk being wrong so I ... read more

MY CS HOST. Finn was his name -- it rhymed with Lynn, thus we were of course destined to get along. Finn's online humor was contagious and I was looking forward to meeting him. After an hour train ride south from Oberhausen and a hike up five exhausting flights of stairs we finally met. Finn got me acquainted with his pad - complete with a bar, however, not put to much use (what a shame). I settled in while Finn whipped up some pasta for lunch and we got acquainted over our swap of couchsurfing stories. Finn shared his travels through Europe and the States, one in particular was his trip to or I should say through Spain. His travel was not by air, car, nor by train, but instead by foot. He embarked on the ... read more

THANKSGIVING IN ITALY So I spent Thanksgiving in Italy, but not alone, as I was fortunately blessed to spend it in good company with friends from LA: Louise from Carson, Emily from West LA, and Mario from San Pedro (now living the Allah life in Egypt). We stayed in an apartment just outside of Sorrento in the town of Massa Lubrense. It was a bit of a mission getting to town taking a 3-hour train from Rome to Naples, stopping at Di Micheles for Naples famous Margherita and Marinara pizza, hopping on the regional Circumvesuviana train for an hour to Sorrento, and then final taking a 20 minute SITA bus ride cliffside along the Sorrento coast into the town square of Massa Lubrense. We settled into the apartment and got things in order with Luigi, the ... read more

Europe November 30th 2008

Well I've hit 55 days into my Western Europe trip and it feels like I got here an eternity ago with so many places visited, awesome couches surfed, cool people I've met, a million pictures taken, and only half a month left before I return to living the American way of life. It has definitely been a learning experience adjusting to each place I've visited, the cultures I´ve experienced, and just living like a European in general. MONEY. The Euro (€) is the main currency used in EU nations. In contrast to the US currency, EU bills are different sizes and there is no 1 Euro bill, but instead a 1€ coin and even a 2€ coin. Expect to carry lots of coins in Europe. Oh, and if you're traveling from a non-EU country to an ... read more

Okay, so let the Germany blogs begin, but let me preempt this blog by stating it will be of more particular interest to former colleagues as its "work-related", and may bore the rest of you. The only thing of general interest perhaps would be that I got to see Alicia Keys live in concert, which I will go into more detail about later. Suit yourself....feel free to read on, skip to just the pictures, or bypass this blog all together if you wish. OBER-WHERE? Oberhausen. A city in the Northwest region of Germany and a 2-hour train ride from Amsterdam. Oberhausen isn't exactly the place that travelers frequent, but nonetheless has a worthy industrial history to Germans in once being a steel mill and coal mine town. My reason for visiting: SMG, my former employer at ... read more

MY AMSTERDAM CS HOSTAfter a 3-hour train ride from Brussels, I arrived in the evening at Amsterdam Central Station and quickly made my way to Alfon's place. I arrived at a cute flat in the center of the city greeted by "Fons" as they call him. His place was decorated with modern grafitti style paintings. The works of art were his own come to find out Fons is a freelance graphic artist specializing in website design who dabbles in painting from time to time. He wasn't shy to say the least, with plenty of things to say, a great sense of humor, and overall the kind of person you just love to be around. The minute I got settled, we lounged out on his fat boy bean bags and chatted the night away for almost four ... read more
