Our journey over the border to Phu Quoc Island was a long one. After a boring bus ride and time consuming border crossing, we bought what we thought was a "fast boat ticket", but ended up on some falling apart, old rickety thing that took 4 uncomfortable hours! It was all worth it though. Phu Quoc isn't your standard backpacker destination, with parts of the island dominated by upmarket resorts, however there are still many hidden gems left to be explored and enjoyed off the tourist trail. We were a little worried on arrival about the room prices; some were quoting up to $150 per night, so for us (who are used to paying around $5) this was extortionate. After many failed searches we managed to find a brand new hotel for $15, our most expensive ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville March 13th 2011

Hello! We currently have viruses on both our USB and memory cards so we havn't been able to update the blog. Two weeks ago we travelled from Chi Phat to the southern coastline of Cambodia. Our first stop was sihanoukville for some much needed relaxation and sun to burn off our leech-bitten ridden bodies! We loved it here and spent 4 amazing, chilled out days lying on the beach and drinking 50cent beers. Although it was one of the more touristy areas we have been to, the beach was so long we managed to find a nice quiet spot towards the end of the main strip, away from the holiday makers and with a lovely restaurant. Within hours of arriving Rikki had already been convinced to have a foot massage and Lucy found herself having a ... read more

Krong Koh Kong and it's surrounding areas boasts a number of ecotourism and trekking opportunities and we decided to move south to try and do some trekking in a small, rural town called Chi Phat. We took a pleasant boat ride from a nearby town called Anduong Tuek to get there! When we got off the boat at Chi Phat, we were both immediately surprised at how clean this village was, with bins lining it's central (and only) dirt path; the first 'rural' place we have seen them, normally the streets are full of litter. The village has an amazing ecotourism set up, with many options to choose from including a 2 day and 1 night jungle trek which we decided to do! It is run in cooperation with the wildlife alliance and you can really ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Battambang February 28th 2011

Sorry for the long absence...finally we have good enough Internet to update you all! After our sightseeing in Angkor (pics are now up), we caught the boat to Battambang. The boat wasn't quite what we expected and was pretty cramped for a 9 hour journey! However, the route we took was amazing, going through little water ways and floating villages, with some amazing bird watching along the way.  We spent a day here, exploring the surrounding villages with the help of our tuk-tuk driver/travel guide Tony! He took us around rural Cambodia where we got to see the chilli and peanut farms in action, along with a journey on the "bamboo train" (bamboo raft loosely attached to a set of wheels) that the locals use to transport cargo across town! Eventhough we were both feeling quite ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap February 19th 2011

Our journey to Siem Reap was an interesting one.... a cramped bus as usual but this time full of Cambodians being sick into plastic bags everywhere! We have never seen so many people puking at once! And worse still, the puked filled plastic bags were just casually tied up and left to sit amongst our feet for the whole 6 hour journey! However, the journey was made slightly more bearable by a cute kid who we introduced to the likes of Jay z, Tinie Tempah and Kanye! He even borrowed rikkis shades and sat bobbing his head along to the beats! We spent 3 days here overall, generally chilling, shopping, eating and of course seeing the mighty temples of Angkor. We decided to opt for the one day pass (due to budget), but for us this ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » East » Stung Treng February 17th 2011

So our journey through Laos has come to an end :(, but now the Cambodian chapter has begun! We crossed over the border with no problems and made our way into Stung Treng, the first major stop in Cambodia. We stayed here for 2 nights after only planning on staying for the afternoon! We really liked it here, the town is still itself with an amazing market, where the locals go about their daily lives, unaffected by tourism. We loved that only four westerners got off the bus here, with the majority going straight to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap", keeping on the "tourist route". We spent our mornings exploring the market, surrounded by fish flapping, chickens dying and the odd woman trying to sell monkeys on a stick (disgusting)! The rest of the day would ... read more

The amazing 4000 islands........... Getting here took a long 2 days, stopping off at Savannahket overnight, but the never ending bus rides, dust, fumes and aching bums were worth it! The Islands are completely gorgeous, if you want paradise this is it. Although more and more tourists are beginning to make the trip down it is still relatively unknown and still has a certain vibe about it, as if we are the lucky ones that have manged to see the islands before they become some huge tourist trap. There is no motorised transport on the islands, walking, cycling or catching a boat are the only ways to travel which adds to its uniqueness and tranquility. There are two main islands that people tend to stay on; Don Det and Don Khon. Don Det is slightly more ... read more

Kong- Lo Cave, Village home stay and the most amazing 4000 Islands! Where to start.............. the past 2 weeks have been incredible! We decided to head south through Laos and try and get to the Kong-Lo Caves which at first seemed impossible to get to but actually were a pretty easy bus ride! Everyone in Vientiane made the journey seem extremely complicated but with a bit of help from the web we decided to take a chance and catch an early morning bus and hope that we would get there (which we did)! We arrived in a little town called Ba Na Hin which is the nearest point from which to get to the cave, we stayed here the night and then headed to the cave the next morning. The cave was out of this world, ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng February 9th 2011

Vang - Vieng .......... to go or not to go?!! We deliberated so much over whether to visit Vang-Vieng or not, we were put off by horrific stories of crowds of tourists getting ridiculously drunk whilst tubing down a river and waking up with broken ankles but with some persuasion from fellow travelers we decided to go and make our minds up for ourselves as to whether we would like it or not! The journey there was a long one, we had the slowest driver ever! We got the early bus and our friends got the late bus and they ended up getting there over an hour before us! However the scenery was incredible as per usual in Laos, the road was a windy one through mountains and karsts and really cute little villages, it is ... read more

Thailand into Laos on a slow boat- the ultimate way to travel! Our journey began travelling from Chiang Mai to the border town of Chiang khong with a quick detour to visit the newly built "white temple". This temple was like no other we've seen, it has been designed by a thai artist and is meant to illustrate the journey from hell into heaven. The temple is amazing, like something out of narnia, there should be a snow queen living there! It is so pretty with pristine white walls and tiny mirrors decorating it but it had a dark twisted meaning to it, with the inside being decorated with random pictures of superheroes, the twin towers and george bush and bin laden, along with evil creatures surrounding the temple (such as a metal statue of "predator"). ... read more
