Asia » Japan » Kyoto April 1st 2006

Two years ago, when I was living in Hirakata City, I was convieniently located 35 minutes south of Kyoto. I can't count the number of weekends I spent wandering the tourist oriented streets taking in the sights of ancient Kyoto... I loved those weekends, and travelling back there this past weekend has reminded me why. Kyoto is currently Japan's seventh largest city with a population of about 1.4 million, and although the downtown sector is quite modern, it is still home to many priceless structures. Actually, Kyoto is home to some of Japan's oldest shrines and temples, and it was Japan's capital city (and the emperor's residence) from 794 until 1868. Due to the significance/value of its historical structures, Kyoto was not targeted during the air raids of World War II. Friday afternoon Logan and ... read more

This last weekend I boarded a chartered bus with 30-40 other Hiroshima JETs and headed east to Osaka for a weekend of sumo, partying, and Universal Studios. What a weekend! Let's just say that I made the most of my time, only sleeping for 2 hours throughout the 2-day trip (...which consequently resulted in me not being able to talk due to losing my voice, and 3 days sick leave from work... but that's another story!). So the trip started bright and early (well, even before that because I was up before the sun) on Saturday morning with a 1.5 hour trip into the city to meet up with the other JETs. At 8 am we boarded our chartered bus and settled in for the 4 hour bus ride ahead of us. Since everyone was ... read more

This last weekend I went to an island called Etajima (which is just south of Hiroshima City), and took place in an Ogiri. Basically, I sat on a stage with 4 other foreigners and had a room full of 70-100 Japanese people listen to what we thought about Japan. I was pretty nervous walking onto that ... read more

On Saturday the 18th a bunch of English teachers and I travelled to Okayama City (about 3 hours East of Hiroshima City) for a weekend of castle viewing, festivals, and yes, naked men! My weekend began with a 3 hour train ride with Casey to Okayama City. Once there we decided to go and check out Okayama Castle. The castle is usually nick-named "U-jo" or "Crow Castle" due to its "black appearance of the donjon which was actually faced with black weather-boards." "Destroyed in WWII, the exterior of the 16th Century castle was faithfully reconstructed in 1966. The interior has an authentic period collection of palanquins, samurai helmets, swords, and the like." (Okay, I just got lazy and used the castle description from the phamplet... hence the quotation marks.) After our castle viewing we met up ... read more

http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_Ih.html DAY 1: Saturday, February 4th The adventure started bright and early (6am!) when I rolled off my futon at Ryokan Casey (a.k.a Casey Hotel... a.k.a Casey's apartment where I spend every weekend). Out of excitement I jumped up and shouted "We're going to Hokkaidooooo!!!" only to be shot down by Casey who quickly reminded me that it was still only 6am, and far too early to be genki. Man.. I was soooo excited! After a quick breakfast we headed out to meet the guys before busing it to Hiroshima Airport. Well, upon check-in we were given a strange warning that "if you can't land in Sapporo than the plane will have to fly back." I think everyone was just kinda thinking 'strange, never had a warning like that before.' So, we checked-in and began our ... read more

I think it is pretty obvious that I am enjoying my stay in Japan, and hopefully my blogs have helped you understand why. Every experience tends to end up as an adventure, and even the bad ones (although few and far between) have their good points! Well, the past four days have been a continuation of that adventure: Thursday and Friday I attended a "Mid-Year Conference" with all of the other JET Programme English teachers in Hiroshima City, and then on Saturday and Sunday a good number of us stuck around in the city and partied it up! THE CONFERENCE: I think that all of the other JET English teachers would agree with me when I say that these "conferences" are far better than having to teach in our schools. Personally, I love being 'forced' ... read more

This past Saturday Hiroshima's weather consisted of a tonne of rain, and far too many clouds! Actually, it was the kind of day where there are limited options when deciding what to do. After realizing that there was no point in sightseeing anywhere, my friend Casey and I discussed our options: go to the movies (and pay the ridiculous price of $18 AMER. to see one movie!), go shopping (even though we find it difficult fitting into the small Japanese sizes), OR be Japanese and spend the day playing Pachinko! Yep, Pachinko was by far our best bet! The best way to describe Pachiko is to think of slot machines... because that is basically what they are. But for some reason or another, Japanese people are OBSESSED with Pachinko! I have driven through towns in ... read more

Let's just begin with this year's New Year invitation, compliments of Phil: "I would like to cordially invite any and all persons, loved ones, and mistress's to attend a new year's eve celebration in the great city of London Ontario. Mind you this is merely a suggestion, let me remind you that my proposal includes: extreme drunkiness/rowdiness, nudity, table dancing, a copulous amount of champagne, attendance at one of londons numerous drinking holes to ring in the new year with a followup performance at the 919 waterloo street residence where i reside to watch people drop like flies." That being read, I think it is much easier for people to understand the kind of New Year's I had. Once again, New Year's was out of control and a lot of fun! The evening began at ... read more

Just like any other kid, the best part of Christmas for me when I was a child was by far the presents... anyone who says their childhood preferences were different is a liar! However, as I have gotten older (maybe not really matured) I have come to love other things about Christmas... particularly the food! ... haha, and the family. So the fact that I was at home with my family for Christmas this year meant a lot to me. Here are some things I liked best about going home for Christmas (in no order because that would take too long): 1. The Christmas sweets (4 nanaimo bars a day!) 2. Christmas dinner at Aunt Mary's 3. Having the "guest" treatment at home since my parents hadn't seen me in 5 months. 4. Canadian food! ... read more

Before heading home for Christmas I decided to take part in a traditional Japanese experience: kimono wearing! It was great! My appointment lasted just over 2 hours, and for the duration of that time I had my hair done in a traditional kimono-wearing style, was dressed in a beautiful salmon pink kimono, and had my picture taken by a very nice Japanese lady. The place I went to have this done is tradtionally used as a bridal photo studio place, but they also make acceptions for foreigners... so much fun! Before having my hair done I was asked to search through drawers of kimono and select one to wear. I was tempted to go for my usual, bright pink, but I decided to be a little more grown up.... so I chose a "salmon pink" ... read more
