Malaysia PART 1: Kuala Lumpur Malaysia PART 2: Taman Negara (the jungle) Malaysia PART 3: The islands of the East Coast - Penang and Langkawi Being in Kuala Lumpur was an experience mixed with culture, shopping, craziness, and clubs. We spent each of our 3 days sightseeing and shopping in the afternoons, and partying throughout the nights. On our first day we bargained our way through Chinatown (Petaling Street) and the Central Market, and accidentally attended some kind of ritual at 'Sri Mahamariamman Temple'. Watching the ritual was fascinating as they chanted over a fire having an offering blessed before setting it aflame. It was interesting to see the role of the wife as she was allowed to circle the temple with her husband during the blessing, but then quickly moved behind the men when ... read more

Although I am a fan of airport shopping and never seem to get tired of looking at the same thing in multiple shops, I decided that with a 9 hour stop over in Shanghai I should at least try to be more productive. So, when I arrived bright and early on the morning of the 22nd I cleared airport customs and gathered my courage to face the crazy city of Shanghai on my own. Traveling from Pudong Int'l Airport to the city center is an adventure in itself. There is a magnetic levitation train called the Maglev which reaches 431 km/h! To travel the 30 km from the airport to city centre the trip takes a mere 8 minutes! By the time I had gotten on and taken some pictures it was already time to ... read more

Looking back at my 2 years in the small town of Yachiyo, I realize now how many wonderful experiences I had there, and how lucky I was to be a part of rural life in Japan. I remember thinking upon arrival "Oh ****! What have I gotten myself into?!?" But, as time went by the people of Yachiyo proved to me that I had become involved in a great community. It seemed that because I was the only foreigner in town people were continuously going out of their way to help me. If I ever needed anything, all I had to do was mention it to one or two people, and by the next day someone was there to help me. It was always such a comfort knowing that people were looking out for me! As ... read more

For the last two weeks my Mom and Dad have been here with me in Japan. Sticking with tradition, I made sure that from the moment their plane landed they would make the most of every moment, and see as much of the country as possible. (Past trips have included sightseeing all of London, England on a double decker bus right after leaving the airport; walking straight to the night district of Bangkok after arriving in Thailand, etc. ...I guess I just like to keep it interesting!) So, to ensure this trip got off to the right start we rented a car from Osaka's Kansai International Airport, and with the help of our very handy navigation system (who we nicknamed Sake ) we were able to travel freely throughout Japan. The first night's drive from Kansai ... read more

CAMBODIA: PART 2 OF 3 To get to the second destination of my Cambodian adventure I sleepily made my way to the Phnom Penh-bound buses early on the morning of the 25th. After excellent service at my hotel, I had complete confidence that when purchasing my bus ticket from them (and not the bus company directly) I would end up on a rather new air-conditioned bus. Boy was I wrong!! I arrived as requested, 15 minutes prior to departure, only to find that I was one of the last to board this 10-15 year old bus with plastic seat covers. I knew I was in for a ride from hell when they took my ticket and pointed to my seat - in the back left-hand corner of the bus!!! Realizing that fair was fair, and ... read more

CAMBODIA: PART 1 OF 3 It always amazes me to visit new countries and experience unique cultures. Travelling to Cambodia introduced me to a culture which has experienced unbearable suffering, but yet has overcome their anguish and continued on as a nation of friendly and generous people. Arriving at the airport late on the night of March 21st I was immediately reminded of South America, where people greet each other with warm smiles and do not hesitate to conversate with a random passerby. Although airports are generally miserable places (especially when you are tired and hungry), I was immediately entertained by a group of customs officials who joked with me as I waited for my Cambodian Visa to be processed. Maybe because I was travelling solo, or maybe because I have been immersed in a "not-so-expressive" ... read more

With every passing experience in Japan I seem to learn something new about the culture. Last week as my friend Casey and I hitch hiked our way down to Nagasaki and Kumamoto we learned just how generous and kind Japanese people can be. With a 3-day weekend to entertain us, but limited spending funds, we decided our best bet for an adventure would be to hitch hike to our destination. DAY 1: This all began on a Friday afternoon just north of Hiroshima city. I think it is important to note here that Casey and I have not hitch hiked many times before, and neither one of us had ever covered any significant distance. So, standing at a traffic light before the on ramp for the highway, with an "Iwakuni (or in the direction of)" sign ... read more

Every Friday morning I start my weekends off by visiting a kindergarten or day care center for the 3 hours before lunch (when my weekend technically begins). Visiting the kindergartens is enough fun to be considered a vacation, and this week it was even more vacation-like because we celebrated the Japanese holiday Setsubun . I have attached a better description of setsubun below, but I also want to explain my experience... because it was definitely cultural! So on Friday morning after singing a few English songs with the kids they were asked to get out their handmade masks (which were about to protect them from the lurking devil or oni as it is called in Japanese.) Soooo cute! These masks ranged from colorful circles which framed their faces, to full out piles of construction paper ... read more

Yesterday was the annual school concert for two of my kindergartens. Yoshida Kindergarten in the morning, and Hinokawa Kindergarten in the afternoon. I participated in the Yoshida Kindergarten concert because the kids and I prepared 5 English songs to sing to their parents. This was my second year doing this, and once again it was a lot of fun! Our English presentation was about 20-25 minutes long, and I was very nervous the entire time! Standing under a spot light infront of a hundred parents is not easy! But, for the second year in a row I sucked it up and braved the crowd so that the kids could show off the English they have learned. Our five songs were "Hello! How are you?" "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes," "The Finger Family," "Rainbow" and "What's ... read more
