Appenzell had some big clouds hanging about 100 feet over my head, and it was raining. I wished it wasn't raining, but it was my last day, so I made the best of it. You know how you sometimes feel like you're walking around with your head in the clouds? I really was. My little hotel was in a convenient location, so I walked a few blocks into town. Many of the buildings had the traditional painting on them, and most have shutters. This area of Switzerland is so close to Germany, so the style of architecture is very similar to what I saw in Bavaria. Many of the businesses have an ornate metal insignia that hangs perpendicular to their entrance door. It depicts the store's type of business. This comes from long ago when many ... read more

I was so tired that I slept 12 hours Saturday night! I was ready for a long day of train travel from Italy into the northeast corner of Switzerland. Lori served yogurt and a local type of fruitcake for breakfast, and then she gave me a ride to the station (it was sprinkling a little). On my trip yesterday, I rode a panoramic train from Chur to Tirano, but as I returned I booked a regular Swiss train that runs on the same tracks. It was an overcast day, and many of the mountain tops were in the clouds. It gave a totally different look to the scenes I saw yesterday in the sunlight. The last six cars of the train were packed with tour groups who had reserved an entire car. I had the front ... read more

For the last 20 years, I have subscribed to several travel magazines, and I get very excited when a new one arrives. In one of my first travel magazines there was an article about the world's most outstanding train trips. One of the trips was the Orient Express, and it looked interesting, but the trip that won my heart was the Bernina Express. The train starts in Chur, Switzerland, which is very near the border with Liechtenstein. It climbs up through the Alps by way of spiraling tunnels and crosses the Bernina Pass on one of the highest train crossings in the world. Then it descends by way of corkscrew bridges and viaducts into Turino, Italy. I really can't describe the things I saw, but I will post many pictures. For more info, go to www.swisstravelsystem.com/.../Bernina-express-en.html ... read more

Friday, Sept. 13 This was a “repositioning” day. I was able to sleep in a little later than usual, and then hit the buffet breakfast. This was not one of those Hampton Inn freebies; it was supposed to be pretty special. They eat unusual things for breakfast in Europe. Since it was Munich, they served these special breakfast sausages that were part of our “food education” tour last night. These sausages are white, and they're made of pork, veal, and parsley. They are in a casing which you don't eat, and they are served with sweet mustard. They also eat cold sliced meat and cheese along with crusty bread of different types. They had a section of sliced vegetables and canned fruit. Then there were the different kinds of granola. They also had granola that had ... read more

I got up early to catch a 7:30 train to Salzburg. Staying right across the street from the train station is great! It was cold and rainy; staying in bed sounded so good, but this was the “scheduled” day for Salzburg. It took about 90 minutes to get there, since it was a regional train that makes several stops, instead of a high-speed express. I had studied the Rick Steves book and the internet, so I knew which city bus to take to get to the heart of town. It's always such a thrill to arrive someplace new and actually realize your plan is going to work! I exited the bus at Mirabell Plaza just in time to be the first and only customer on the Hop-On, Hop-Off tourist bus around town. It was still cold ... read more

I don't remember the first time I saw a picture of the Neuschwanstein Castle, but I was impressed and thought it would be amazing to get to see it "for real". This was the day. After spending the last 9 days traveling alone, I had decided to sign up for a group trip to the castles. Since I had changed my hotels for my Munich stay, I only had to cross the street to get to the meetup place for this trip. We had a huge bus full of English speaking tourists, and a very knowledgeable guide. Obviously, there was an open seat next to me. Who would you guess would end up in that seat? If you guessed a wealthy, handsome, European man with a great sense of humor...you would be wrong. Instead, it was ... read more

I had a little more time to finish looking around in this great little village of Rothenburg. When I first saw it, I immediately thought it looked like a movie set. It's just so hard to believe that a town this old is still intact after so much destruction in Germany's wars. Supposedly, American troops had bombed it during the war, but they missed the center of town. They were later ordered to bomb it again, but there was an American officer who's mother had visited Rothenburg in 1609 and brought back a painting of the old buildings. She told him stories of how much she loved the place, and that painting hung in their dining room during his early life. When word reached him that the town was to be destroyed, he called the right ... read more

I'm on my way to the Bavarian area of Germany. As I'm starting this blog, I'm cruising along on a high speed train. I'm in 2nd class, but the seats are spacious, and I have a tray table for my net book. This is a great way to travel. I managed to make several train changes without missing any of them. When you get in to your station, you usually have from 4-12 minutes to get to some other track which may require dragging your luggage down a set of stairs, through a tunnel, and up the stairs on the other side to catch your next train. It's kind of like a game show where you have to find your track, get to it (while hauling a backpack and a 50 pound piece of luggage), dodge ... read more

Sunday, Sept. 8 I woke up ready to continue my trip and laugh at my stupidity demonstrated last night. The weather was cool as I took off to roam the streets of Bacharach. Since it was Sunday, a few of the shops were closed, but the restaurants were open, and that was important. There were such amazing smells coming from the kitchens, and I was ready to eat. I stopped at a cute, quirky place run by a woman in her mid sixties who spoke very good English. She said that Joe Cocker had performed the night before in an open air amphitheater on top of the Lorelei Cliff very near Bacharach. She and her employees are big fans, so she shut down the restaurant on a Saturday night so they could all go to the ... read more

t's been a big day! I stayed in a little pension, which in this case means a few rooms above a business. My room was fine; I could turn around in the bathroom AND in the shower! However, the business below was a nice little open-air bar that had a party going until 4:00 a.m. I considered the addage, “If you can't beat 'em, join 'em”, but I just couldn't do it! I had breakfast on their little breakfast terrace. European breakfasts are always a little quirky to us Americans; there was an assortment of what we could call lunch meat, some cheese, and hard rolls. Cochem is a really pretty, traditional German town which sits on the edge of the Mosel River, and like most of these little towns, there is a castle on the ... read more
