Sunday, June 6th We drive to the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge at Prairie City, Iowa. The Learning Center at the refuge explains how the natural prairie is being restored through controlled fires, the re-introduction of native species, and the eradication of invasive plant species. We follow a self-guided driving tour which shows specific techniques being used to restore the prairie. A herd of bison and other animals have been brought to the refuge as part of the prairie restoration. As we have traveled through the Midwest, we have stopped at several sites where the prairie ecosystems are being restored. Only about one percent of the natural prairie still remains, but many universities, wildlife refuges, national parks and nonprofits such as Nature Conservancy and the Audubon Society have stepped in to preserve what remains and to ... read more

Saturday, June 5th We break camp early in the morning because of an unexpected rainstorm and drive east toward the Mississippi River and up to Guttenberg, Iowa, a center for German immigrants in the 1840’s. Many families, including the Muellers and Fischers (Leigh’s family), traveled through here on the way west to Iowa farmlands where they settled. The town displays an excellent copy of the Gutenberg Bible in honor of its German heritage (and its name). We continue north along the Mississippi and cap our German experience by stopping at a brewpub in McGregor for lunch. We then visit the nearby Effigy Mounds National Monument featuring large mounds in the shape of animals built by the Native American Woodlands culture hundreds of years ago. They are so large their shapes can't be easily discerned from the ... read more

North America » United States » Iowa » West Branch June 3rd 2010

Friday, June 4th We visit the Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch, Iowa and find out about Herbert Hoover’s Shaker heritage and his early career as a mining engineer and businessman and his later career as President and as a humanitarian in two world wars. We visit the very modest Hoover family home and the Shaker meeting house preserved on the grounds of the Library. We then drive to the nearby Amana colonies which were established in 1855 by German immigrants with the utopian ideal of a cooperative religious community. They selected this area for its rich farmland and became well known for their craftsmanship. They lived the communal life until 1932 when disastrous economic conditions forced them to disband. Many of their buildings and craft work still remain. We drive east through the Iowa countryside ... read more

Wednesday, June 2nd and Thursday, June 3rd. Today we plan to travel east along the Missouri River to the Mississippi River and then travel north along the river up to Hannibal. On our way along the Missouri River, we stop at Herman, a tidy town which capitalizes on its German heritage. We visit the Stone Hill Winery to try out their white wines, but don’t leave town without sampling some German-style beer as well. We follow the Missouri to Saint Louis, where it joins the Mississippi. We zip along the waterfront to view the famous arch and then head north along the Mississippi. We spend the night at Clarksville, where our motel overlooks the river and we can watch the tugboats pushing huge barges of cargo south. The next morning we continue moving north on The ... read more

Monday, May 31st and Tuesday, June 1st. We head for Independence, Missouri, on the outskirts of Kansas City, where the Harry Truman Presidential Library is located. Great film and exhibit of how Truman became President and the decisions he faced while in office. We enjoy the replica of the Oval Office and the murals by Thomas Hart Benton. We travel east through the Missouri countryside toward Paris, where Laurie’s ancestors (the McGees) settled in 1826. We camp at nearby Mark Twain Lake Campground located near the birthplace of Mark Twain. The next morning we head into the town of Paris, first stopping at Pleasant Hill Cemetery where we locate the grave of Mary McCoun McGee, who lead the overland trek with her family and other pioneers to Paris from Kentucky when she was 75. We visit ... read more

North America May 28th 2010

Thursday May 27th through Sunday, May 30th. Today we head for Kansas City from Sallisaw, Oklahoma via the Ozarks. The Ozarks extend through parts of Arkansas up through western Missouri. We stop at vista points along the way and set up camp at Table Rock State Park which is just outside of Branson, Missouri. Then we check out the bright lights of Branson and the crowds pouring in for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. We stop at Stone Hill Winery to sample some Missouri wines and take a short tour. Most of the people at the wine tasting bar seem to prefer the sweeter white wines which we didn't particularly care for. The reds also tended to be thinner than California reds. The types of grapes that will grow there (Norton, Catawba, and Concord), the climate, ... read more

Monday, May 24th and Tuesday, May 25th. After we break camp, we take the scenic byway through the heart of the Flint Hills area of Kansas. We stop at the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve, a National Park site that is restoring the native grasslands which covered much of the Midwest before the area was settled by farmers. This area is relatively untouched because of the thick layer of flint lying just below the surface of the grass, making the ground impractical for plowing. We take a ride far out in the prairie, where no human habitation can be seen. A small herd of buffalo, recently established as part of the natural ecosystem, graze near the road, indifferent to our passing bus. We enjoy seeing the vistas and the wide variety of grasses, birds and wildflowers. On the ... read more

North America » United States » Kansas » Abilene May 23rd 2010

Sunday May 23rd This morning we visit the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene. We view a film about his life and his presidential years and walk around the beautiful grounds which contain Ike’s boyhood home. We then head south to historic Council Grove where many wagon trains stocked up on supplies for the trek west along the Santa Fe Trail. Many stately homes and public buildings. We find a great campsite at Lake Council Grove just outside town. We are finding that “camping” apparently means “RVing” nowadays, and frequently campgrounds do not have spaces for tents, or if they do, the campsites are “primitive”, ie. no running water or restrooms, just a picnic table, fire ring and an occasional “vault” (pit) toilet (definitely not to my standard). This campsite was a pleasant surprise, with a nice ... read more

May 21st. We find a beautiful campsite at Lake Pueblo along a reservoir. The lighting is beautiful and there are many wildflowers in bloom. As we drive east, we move into cattle country and see many cattle on the range--and many in muddy, smelly feedlots or cattle trucks. We stop for the night at an RV camp named Gunsmoke just outside of Dodge City. The tent area is nice--and deserted. We have our area of the park to ourselves. The next morning we decide to skip the cowboy tourist stuff in Dodge City and head for Quivira Wildlife Refuge, a large marsh area that is an important stopping point for thousands of birds during the spring and fall migrations. We are there too late for the big flocks but see many birds and other critters and ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Pueblo May 20th 2010

May 20th. This morning we take the 19 mile drive up to Pike's Peak, although the weather conditions probably won't allow us to reach the peak. The day is somewhat overcast but we still have great visibility. We stop to take a lot of photos. After many switchbacks on the steep slope, we are stopped at 16 miles up by icy road conditions so we head back down the mountain. We visit the Manitou Springs Cliff Dwellings at the foot of Pike's Peak and enjoy walking through the ancient Anasazi structures. From there we head south to the Royal Gorge to cross the famous bridge high over the Royal Gorge canyon. As the sun moves toward the horizon we head for Lake Pueblo on the eastern border of Colorado where we hope to find a campsite. ... read more
