This is our last night in Las Alpujarras. The week has gone quickly for us and we are happy to have hiked four of our six days here. Today we fully intended to relax, read, and do laundry. We knew it was market day in Pitres so we wanted to go there and buy some fruit from the farmers who come to town on Friday. At the last minute we decided to hike to town since it is only a couple of kilometers. We threw on our Camelbaks so we would be able to carry our purchases back home, and we needed to wear our hiking boots because there is a stream that we cross (no bridge) on the way there. We made it to town and bought peaches and plums and honey, and then went ... read more

Yesterday was another rest day and we enjoyed an excursion to two high villages, Bubion and Capileira. Getting there requires hugging the side of a narrow road with switch backs, but around each corner another breathtaking view awaits. We wandered about and did some shopping - I ended up with a scarf and a lovely leather purse. When we returned home there was a long thunderstorm and pouring rain, but it made our little place that much more cozy. In the evening we ventured down the steep hillside for dinner in Mecina at a vegetarian restaurant we have enjoyed on our other visits. We sat next to a young couple from Berlin and visited with them throughout dinner exchanging addresses at the end with promises to visit each other in our home locations. Today was a ... read more

Tuesday September 17 Yesterday was a rest day. We lazed around in the morning and then went into Pitres to the market. After picking up our usual supplies of coffee, cheese, wine, etc. we went to one of the two bars in the small plaza for cafe solo (Sam), and Cafe con Leche for me. We are enjoying the time to just sit and visit and watch and rest. Back to our lovely patio to read for a couple hours, where we enjoyed the company of Oska, the smaller of our two canine hosts. For lunch we went back into Pitres and quickly discovered that not much is open on a Monday. We went to the second of the two bars in the small plaza, this one is known as "Paco's Bar," not to be confused ... read more

Sunday September 15 I am sitting on the patio at our farmhouse in Las Alpujarras. As I write I can hear the clanging of goat and sheep bells across the way as the dogs keep watch from the hill just in front of me. There are baby goats that continue to call to their mothers and a gentle breeze stirs the wisteria leaves above my head. This is what I have longed for - when I can't sleep at home I often visualize this setting and it calms me. Back to Granada...after we napped Friday evening, we climbed up to the Albaicin section of the city. This was the old Moorish neighborhood, dating back to the 11th century, and the narrow cobbled streets wind up and up past white-washed houses. As we climbed there were taxis ... read more

Friday, September 14 We spent Tuesday night, the 10th, at the Radisson at PDX. Our alarm was set for 3:30 am, but neither of us really slept that night. Up at 3:30 and on the 4:30 shuttle to the airport. By 4:45 we were checked in for our 7:15 flight to Newark. The flight was uneventful and once in Newark we had a five hour lay over. We had passes to the United Club so we went there, found comfortable chairs, enjoyed several glasses of complimentary wine, and various snacks. We visited with an older woman who was on her way from Phoenix to Edinburgh Scotland to visit her daughter's family and then with a couple from Florida who were returning from a trip to England. We talked on the phone to all the kids and ... read more

We spent two full days in Barcelona but only scratched the surface of all there is to see. We rented a flat through “Holiday’s in Barcelona,” and it went really smoothly. Our apartment was on the third floor and had a nice roof top terrace, but the rooms inside were really small. It would be a challenge to live there as a single person, but it worked great for our three nights. We enjoyed having our breakfast on the terrace each morning -coffee from the French press, good bread that we bought in Orgiva and orange marmalade and yogurt. We were on St. Pere Des Mas Alt which is just a few blocks from The Plaça de Catalunya, a large plaza surrounded by monumental buildings and Barcelona's busiest square. It is located between the old city ... read more

“The rain in Spain….” well after 3 weeks of great weather we finally got rain - and we got enough to make up for all those clear days! Our time in the Alpujarras was wonderful. We hiked for 3 days covering nearly 20 miles of trails. Many of the trails were ancient, used by the Moors 500-600 years ago, and used today by herds of goats. We loved hiking along, or even sitting on our terrace later in the day, and hearing the bells that each goat wears around its neck. The goats are tended by dogs and occasionally we saw a goat herder as well. In all of that hiking we passed less than 10 other people. Ferreriola, where we stayed, is high on one side of the Trevelez river gorge and several times we ... read more

We have been without internet access for several days, but those days have been full. We left the Coimbra area of central Portugal on Tuesday and drove south to the very tip of Portugal. Sagres was once believed to be the end of the world. This is where Henry the Navigator set up a school in the 15th century, where Magellan and Columbus both studied. Our drive south took us through varying terrains and climates. We drove out of the more lush hills and river valleys into country that was like the plains of the United States with farm crops and cattle and then we were back in grapes and olives before finally dropping down into the Algarve where there were miles of lemon, lime and orange orchards. The air was warm and dry, the stark ... read more

Today was our second full day in Portugal. Our last morning in Salamanca I had a final serving of churros and chocolate (they really are as good as I had imagined!) and then found our way out of the city - thanks to Sam’s careful planning which involved a walk-through from the parking garage back to the hotel. The drive out of Salamanca led us through changing landscapes and crops. We passed lots of cows of various breeds - there were brown cows and white cows and black cows and charcoal colored cows. After an hour of driving we stopped in Ciudad Rodrigo, a frontier town near the border with Portugal. This town, on the top of a hill, is an ancient walled city that looks out over the plains. We walked the wall and stopped ... read more
