This week began with a 2 day trip into the blue mountains. We had to get the first ferry into town to catch the tour. Whats so great about sydney is the fact that you can be in the mountains then on the beach within 90mins. The blue mountains get their name because of a blue haze which surrounds them caused by the way the light hits the gases emitted by the thousands of eucalyptus trees that cover the mountains. The weather forecast wasn't fantastic but as soon as we had left the centre of sydney the skys cleared and we were blessed with a beautiful day. Our first stop was to one of the many national parks where we got to see lots of Kangaroos. We did 2 longish walks, one of which involved going ... read more

Week 18 was pretty much dedicated to surfing as it was probably going to be my last chance to catch any waves until I get home. Byron Bay is Hippy central and well known for its surfing (and weed smoking) culture. On my first full day in Byron I thought I would go and check out the main beach and its a good job I didn't lob a surfboard down there because the waves didn't even come up to my knees. Thankfully in the afternoon though I met 3 guys who had a van and were heading to one of the other local beaches which actually had some decent surf and they invited me along. We crammed as many surf boards as possible into the back of the van and then we were off. After a ... read more

Kia Ora, Have decided to give you at least 1 week to read which is up to date, and boy has it been an eventful one. By this point I've already been in New Zealand for 1 week and spent most of it either sick in bed or on a bus with flu :( Anyway at the start of week 21 I was in Franz Josef for my 4th night. I ended up staying there because I really wanted to do my glacier hike and I couldn't get on a bus any sooner. Turns out I wasn't quite better in time to do the glacier hike, so I booked on a 20 min scenic heli flight instead, it was only $40 more expensive than the hike and that way I still got to see the glacier. ... read more

OK, well last week ended at Kroombit Cattle station and thats exactly where this week begins. We had a very early wake up on monday morning and after a quick breakfast they took us down to the goat pens, where we subsequently worked in teams of 3 to catch, turn and pretend to brand them (our group came second :P). Before that we learnt how to throw a lasso, which is not as easy as it looks!! After our goat rodeo and lasso lesson, we headed to the horses for the goat muster. Since I was the most experienced rider in our group they gave me the most troublesome horse and boy was he a pain the ass. He has a bit of a thing with the ladies and hates not getting his own way. Once ... read more

Ok so here we go. If you've read my other blogs then you'll know that I ended up travelling with 2 dutch guys for about a month and a half round australia. This was rather spontaneous and took slightly longer than we thought it would. Anyway was a result I ever so slightly limited the time I had on the east coast and ended up rushing my way down to Fraser Island, which actually worked out better for me. At the end of week 15, I had just arrived in Cape trip, north of cairns where the rainforest meets the sea. It was still raining in the morning, but after we had finished out free breakfast there was a gap in the rain and we managed to go for a walk along the deserted beach to ... read more

Even after a reasonably good nights sleep, I didn’t feel much better, but had to pack for my flight to Cairns, so had to get up. Afterwards we went into town for my last night in Melbourne and my last night with the guys. For the first time in a while, it started to rain, just as we arrived in town. We wanted to do something special for my last night, but couldn’t really think of anything. In the end we went to the pub by the cinema and had a great laugh about all the ridiculous things we’d done (some are so ridiculous they haven’t been included in any of my blog entries :p) We wanted to go bowling but there was no one there. We still had 4 cinema vouchers left, so went to ... read more

While we were in Torquay I booked to have a refresher surfing lesson, in an attempt to get my technique back to what it used to be. It started at 9am, and was supposed to last 2 hrs (it turned into 3!!). I almost ended up having the lesson on my own as the other 2 guys booked for the lesson were late. We spent a lot of time warming up on the beach and going through various different techniques. For the first time in ages the sun poked itself out from behind the clouds that had been following us since we started our journey from Adelaide to Melbourne. The sun felt so warm that we were all sweating in our wetsuits… lovely!! It was really nice to have such a small group, because it meant ... read more

We booked to stay 2 nights in Warrambool, before commencing the Great Ocean Road and on our first morning we didn't get up till gone 11 (well its was actually 11.30 because we forgot to put our clocks forward 30mins when we crossed over the South Australia - Victoria boarder) Frank and I really wanted to go for a surf, so we went to check out the beach which was opposite the campsite. Luckily I packed my wetsuit in my backpack, but Frank only had a wetsuit top and boardshorts. Needless to say he froze. We only have 1 surfboard so Frank went in first, while I was on the boogie board and when we swapped he got out. After i'd been battered arround enough by the waves I got out, only to find Frank had ... read more

This is going to be a relatively short entry as we didn't really do that much... Thats not to say we didn't have fun though :p Last weekend ended with a night staying in Coober Pedy, which is the Opal capital of australia. On monday morning before we left, Frank and I went hunting for opals, he wanted one for his brother and I wanted one for my mum and one for my sister. The shop I went to yesterday was closed, so spent a while trying to find a shop that sold what we wanted. After the opal shops we then had a very long drive to a place called Port Augusta. It was almost dark by the time we arrived, but we managed to check into a campsite near the Harbour. I dont think ... read more

Although I'd stayed with Frank and Bobbie over the last week or so, today (tues) was the first day I've actually travelled with them. It was kind of exhilarating, setting out with no rigid time constraints and just the open road ahead of us. Our first stop was Uluru. It felt strange going back to the same place, especially in such a short time span, but it meant i could tell Frank and Bobbie a bit about the history and geology of the sites we were visiting. I told them about the sand dunes I'd watched the sun set from and we decided to go there to watch the sun go down and watch the stars. Since we arrived with several hrs to spare, we put the tent up and spent a few hours recovering ... read more
