If anything will teach me to do a bit of research before going somewhere, Laos would be it. Getting to Laos Before coming to South East Asia, I had images of myself lying in a hammock strung up on a boat slowly flowing down the Mekong, with nothing to do but enjoy the passing scenery and a good book, maybe occassionally slapping the odd mosquito away - so when we saw a tour that said: Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang, by slow boat on the Mekong, it didn't take me long to whip out my money belt and hand over the cash. Oh if only I'd known... It all started pretty well, with a minivan to Chiang Khong, a little village on the Thai side of the Mekong river. We were installed in a guest house ... read more

Chiang Mai Chiang Mai is beautifully situated in Northern Thailand, nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains. Among other things, it's famous for its trekking in the surrounding forests with visits to various hill tribes, such as the Long Necks, elephant riding and tiger sanctuaries. I would have loved to be able to spend more time there - and do a good long trek into the mountains and visiting some of these villages, as well as seeing Pai and Chiang Rai - which are other popular spots in North Thailand. However, my Thai visa was expiring on the 6th of October, leaving me only three days in Chiang Mai, including the day we arrived there - several hours late, as you may recall. So there wasn't enough time to arrange a proper trek and have time ... read more

So one more day on Koh Phi Phi turned into about 6... The next night I met an American girl, Bethany, and an Australian guy, Gerard, at what was supposedly the best restaurant in town: Papaya. The most notable thing about this place was actually their long haired cats who slept in the fridge!! Bethany and Gerard invited me over to sit with them, as I was the only other person in there who actually noticed the cats. We ended up having a really fun night at another bar on the beach - and I finally discovered the joys of buckets. They are actually little buckets - normally with Sam Song (a local Thai whiskey), and red bull and whatever fizzy you want it mixed with. We found a place that did really cheap vodka buckets ... read more

As most of you know, I had planned to have a few weeks on a beach somewhere in Thailand before properly embarking on my big adventure. Well, first it took me a while to figure out where I wanted to go, and after my first day on Koh Chang, it started to rain. And then it just rained and rained for two days. The first day, Dorine and I took it easy - we went up to town and looked around, went to a beauty salon for a bit of personal luxury and then we went to a tailor in the afternoon. Dorine's school of osteopathy have a big ball every year, and she wanted to have a dress made. We looked at designs for a long time and she finally chose a nice design in ... read more

I landed safely but exhausted in Bangkok almost a week ago. I was quite sleep deprived when I left London, after the fabulous leaving drinks at the Loop Bar (thanks everyone for coming along and making it such a fun night), and sitting next to an elderly man on the plane, who apparently didn't need more than two hours sleep and kept turning the lights on and off while drinking his beers, didn't exactly allow me to catch up on any sleep. I had a tiny flash of panic when I was filling out the landing card, as I read in the guide book that they sometimes don't allow you entry when you can't prove that you're leaving within 30 days, and since I'm travelling by land and haven't booked anything yet, I could suddenly see ... read more

Blog... Blogger... Blogged! First time blogger feeling a bit daunted, so you'll all have to bear with me :-) Let's start with the practical bits... A few facts for the uninitiated: Last day in my flat: 31st Aug 2008 Last day at work: 2nd Sep 2008 Leaving drinks: 5th Sep 2008 Leaving for Bangkok: 6th Sep 2008 Preparing for a trip like this isn't easy.... Trying to keep all the "to do's" in my head at once, it feels like it's about to explode. Really should make a list that's a little more detailed than "Arrange visas" and "cancel direct debits"... I'm sure I've forgotten so much. Oh well, one thing at a time - like finishing up everything at work, which is what I'm currently supposed to be doing... Much more exciting to think about ... read more
