Australia - 26.01.09 - 06.03.09 Cairns, cyclones and diving Getting to Australia was surprisingly difficult. I don’t mean getting on a plane and flying there - I mean the mental adjustment to being back in a Western country again after 4.5 months in laid-back Asia. And on top of that, it was completely different than I imagined. I know, I know - I should do my research better, but I’m too busy travelling to have time to sit down and do it properly. So as it turns out Cairns doesn’t have the dry, hot summers of my “Australian Dream” - it’s in the sub-tropics, part of a rainforest and this summer was unusually wet for their wet season. Just my luck! So I didn’t feel too bad taking it easy for a few days, walking down-town, ... read more

Asia » Singapore January 27th 2009

I went to Singapore twice for a couple of days each. Most of that time was spent walking around, soaking up the atmosphere and looking for the Chinese New Year celebrations… I had timed my second visit so that I’d get there for the Chinese New Year. Unfortunately I was so tired after a sleepless last night in Melaka, that when I got to Singapore, I really wasn't up for much. This was the 25th... Everyone had been telling me that it was Chinese New Year on the 26th, so I took it easy, figuring I'd check out the action the next day. What I didn't realise was that I missed the actual count down! Together with another girl from my hostel, Katie, I went on a search for the lost Chinese New Year… It was ... read more

I actually went to Malaysia on three separate occasions, but will treat them here as if it was just one trip. The first time was a trip to Penang for 5 days over a weekend for a visa run just before Christmas so I could stay in Thailand over the holiday period without interruption. The second time was for a couple of weeks together with Elliott on our way down to Singapore. The third time was for another 5 days in Melaka before I went back to Singapore again for the Chinese New Year and to catch my flight to Australia. Penang Georgetown, Penang, is probably the most multicultural city I have ever been to. It’s a mix of colonial buildings and new high rise office buildings shimmering in the heat of the beating equatorial sun. ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Southern Thailand January 10th 2009

I’m not going to go into details about my time in Thailand over Christmas and New Year except to say where I went, and I have posted some photos which will give you an idea of what I was up to. Suffice it to say that I had such a good time that I decided to stay for longer and extend my trip in general. I was getting a bit stressed about not having enough time to visit the places I had wanted to and tired of moving from one place to another every two nights on average. So I stayed on Koh Phangan for a while with a quick visa run too Malaysia just before Christmas which I spent with friends and friends of friends back on Koh Phangan. New Years was spent on Ton ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao December 3rd 2008

The journey to Koh Tao was a bit of a nightmare. As it turns out I’ve “done” Thailand the wrong way round. When I was here last I went to the west coast, when the monsoon was only just finishing, which meant that the weather wasn’t always perfect… On Phi Phi it was, but everywhere else there was always days with rain in-between. Now that I’m back I’m on the east coast and now the monsoon is over here! We thought that we would get to Koh Tao around mid-morning when we left Bangkok the night before. As it turned out, we were driving down to quite a storm, which meant that the boat we were supposed to take wasn’t running - a fact we only found out when we got to Koh Pha Ngan via ... read more

Unbelievable Cambodia Cambodia is an unbelievable country to visit - in every sense of the word. My first impression of it was from the water festival and national day celebrations in Phnom Penh, where unlike Laos, people were really friendly and smiling and more than willing to tell me about what was going on. The Cambodians speak really good English! Although not as touristed as Thailand, their English is much better. I suppose with 70% of the population being under 15, many of them are learning English at school... Considering the joviality of these festivities, it’s hard to imagine the hardship this country has been through, only recently! From the secret bombings during the Vietnam War to the genocide committed by the Khmer Rouge regime which only ended in 1979 - the Cambodians have been through ... read more

Saigon Saigon, or Ho Chi Minh City as it’s officially known, although bigger than Hanoi is not the capital of Vietnam. I’d been looking forward to going as I’d read and heard about the millions of motorbikes in the streets and people’s heart in throat near death experiences, as well as the jovial nature of the southern Vietnamese people. After spending the night on another night bus from Nha Trang I arrived rather tired at 6.30 in the morning on the tourist street of Saigon. Being greeted by a horde of taxi drivers and guest house representatives as I stepped off the bus was not exactly the good morning I was in the mood for, none the less I found myself following one of the guest house ladies a little while later when I’d successfully retrieved ... read more

Hoi An, 4th November 2008 I've just spent the last two days doing absolutely nothing, and it's been great! I've wandered the streets of Hoi An, sat in the temple courtyards reading my book, and had a few Larue beers with my dinner looking out on the lights reflecting in the river. I've kind of taken a weekend from my travelling, watching films till the wee hours and sleeping in. Only crack in the gloss is all my mosquito bites. People seem to find that after a couple of months away, they somehow become immune, no longer need their mosquito repellent and just don't get stung. I, however, get stung more and more! You say: Impossible!! And I say: I got stung bloody 7 times last night alone! And that was WITH mosquito repellent on, and ... read more

I've decided not to go into as much detail with this entry, as I think the pictures tell a better story than I do... Just a few anecdotes from the road: Ninh Binh The tour to Ninh Binh via the "Ancient Capital" and Tam Coc, although beautiful, made me quite fed up with arranged tours in big groups. The "Ancient Capital" lacked some explanation, as all we saw were really two temples dedicated to the first and second kings of this era, and we didn't have time to visit the grave up on the hill. I'm not really sure what the "Ancient Capital" was... Just a temple? Then it was straight onto our bikes, and this was a lovely part of the day, riding through the magical landscape, through villages with kids that were greeting us ... read more

Hanoi Getting to Hanoi after 25 hours on a bus was a bit daunting. Again, I'd only done my research on the bus getting there, and wasn't quite sure where I wanted to go. But I teamed up with a pair of Canadian girls, and after looking around a bit we found a room for $3.5 each including breakfast. This turned out to be a really nice place - Family Hotel it was called - and they invited you to join them at dinner and helped us book all the tours we wanted. They weren't the cheapest operators around, but unlike the others, they seemed like they delivered what they promised. Especially Huong (Perfume) was very lovely. Always smiling and hugging you and asking how you were. This was my base in Northern Vietnam. Hanoi itself ... read more
