Blog Entry 8: “Don’t do anything stupid.” Last 2 days of Italy The MV Explorer will be arriving in Croatia in T-10 hours. The entire ship crowded into the union and around the news feed spills around the ship to listen to the traditional pre-port debriefing last hour. In pre-ports, they give us pertinent information about what to expect in our next country. The captain of this voyage happens to be from Croatia so he gave us the buzz on Croatia. Tomorrow morning we will be passing a church: the tradition is to honk the ship’s horns 3 times and they will ring their bells in return. We will soon after be passing his house so he will honk the horn another time. I forgot to mention this will be at 630 tomorrow morning :) The ... read more

Blog Entry 7: Rome & Renaissance Gardens Bonjourno from Roma, Italy! Erika, Anthony, Becca, Rachel, Bo, Kevin, Danilo, and myself packed up and headed to Rome for Wednesday into Thursday, the first two days of port. The 8 of us plus pretty much the entire ship population made Rome the most important destination for our 3 day port in Civitavechia. Rome is only an 1.5 hour train/bus ride from Civitavechia and only 4.50 euro. My friend Becca and I took a bus there with a Semester at Sea tour which was the best decision we could have made. The first thing we saw when we got off the bus: THE POPE speaking in the Basilica! It was quite the sight to see. Every Wednesday, The Pope and his affiliates (I apologize for my improper terminology) apparently ... read more

This is Lynn, apologizing for a blog which is posted out of order. Because of some internet restrictions, Kate has been emailing me the blog to post. #5 came while I was in Atlanta. Here you go! Blog Entry #5: First and Fourth Day in Cadiz, Spain! Hola, from Spain!! I’m very tired, to say the least, so I will try to make this brief (try). There’s so much to write!!!!! Just about the entire ship woke up early Wednesday morning to eat breakfast and watch the sunrise out on the 6th deck while we docked into Cadiz. The process is quite fascinating. Someone from the pier who is more familiar with the port boards our ship when we get closer to shore and navigates the ship to the dock. Everyone was so excited to finally ... read more

Hey there! The Bridge Noon Report said that we have 254 Nautical miles from Italy, which means we will be rolling into Italy on time tomorrow (Wednesday) morning! Since Spain, we took a pit stop in Gibralter for fuel and it has been smooth sailing ever since... no puky puky for me! Currently we are passing through the islands of Sardina and Corsica. Italy here we come! Today was a big day for the students on board. We had our Global Studies midterm and paper due... Phew! Glad that’s over! It’s been a challenge fitting 3 classes, homework, sleep, and social time all in 24 hours. Now since that thing called “school” is out of the way, the fun starts. I did, however, have a bit of a set back today. My computer was running dangerously ... read more

Everyone was so excited to finally see land after 8 days. We were taking so many pictures! You would have thought we had never seen land before. Our “tourist” hats were on before we even got off the boat. Getting off the ship is another big process. Imagine getting 750 crazy-excited students out ... read more

Blog Entry 3: In 8 hours, the ship will be docking in Cadiz, Spain! I plan on waking up at the butt-crack of dawn to watch the sunrise and see land which has been very foreign to us stuck out here in the middle of the Atlantic. We had a ship wide "preport de-briefing" tonight. They told us all what to expect along with last minute details and what not. Apparently, the pick-pocketers are especially talented in Spain. Don't worry; I'm fully equipped with money belts and money necklaces (thank you Katie Cuda) that will keep those sneaky, Spaniard hands away. I heard some guy say that he plans on "knockin' 'em out" if anyone steals from him... I don't think he realizes the swiftness of their moves... Today was one of the least eventful days. ... read more

Tomorrow, I will pack a backpack for Spain Today, I ate my first French Fry, Potato Chip, and bowl of ice cream (2 actually), in a week and a half. (They finally served something decent at lunch ;) I ate breakfast with Dean Dia (a bubbly and extra vivacious young woman) and a faculty member at 7:30 in the morning… Luckily I had enough sleep to hold a very decent conversation with them. I sat through my first Global Studies class without getting up due to a wave of nausea. Global Studies is the class that the entire ship takes! It’s located in the Union which is at the front of the ship aka the rockiest, rollercoaster part of the ship… Luckily for me, the Union can’t house all students so some of us spill into ... read more

Entry #1: Friday June 19th, 2009. Ahoy, Mates!! It is 7 o’clock our time, 3 o’clock your time and the ship is a ROCKIN... literally. It’s our 4th day at sea and we are smack dab in the middle of the Atlantic. The weather has been a bit rocky which causes big time waves. And big time waves cause big time sea sickness. The nurses office is overflowing with victims. Today is the first full day that I have been healthy. Today was also the first day I have eaten anything, my stomach couldn’t hold anything down. About 3 hours into the ship sailing, I threw up. And pretty much had been throwing up since then. I tried everything! Pills, wrist bands... You name it. Nothing was working so I went to the nurse, they gave ... read more
