Today is our last day in Singapore. We're leaving tonight at 2:30 am local time. The last few days have been relaxing. I hung out with Karin's grandpa and family all day Wednesday. Karin caught an Indonesian form of Monteczuma's Revenge and has been mostly immobilized since Tuesday so yesterday I went out to MacRitchie Reservoir by myself for a trek through one of the few remaining patches of urban rainforests in the world. I deemed my trip complete when I spotted my first wild monkey bouncing in the trees along the trail in the reservoir. It's a really nice park with a great bridge through the tree tops of the jungle. The city seems to melt away along the 10 kilometer path through the patch of forest. You can only hear the chirping of birds ... read more

I'm sitting in the lobby of Tempat Senang waiting for the ladies to finish their morning spa treatments. My three hours last night was enough for me. I had avocados in my hair, a milk bath with cookies and tea, and an aromatherapy massage. The hair massage was the best and bathing in milk wasn't bad either. We're on the island of Batam, and it's definately a change from bustling Singapore. On the taxi ride in you could see lots of Islamic Minarets in the predominately Muslim country. Hearing the call to prayer at sundown last night was really interesting how it echoed throughout the whole island. The setting at the resort is really peaceful. There are lots of tropical trees, lizards, and of course bugs around. It's nestled on a small hill next to a ... read more

I'll try to catch everyone up to speed. I've been falling behind on the posts. Saturday we went to the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari. Karin and I agreed that the zoo was the best that we had ever been to. Even better than San Diego. There was a lot of free range animals including orangutangs, kangaroos to some extent and some small monkeys. I got to pet some lemurs and a two toed sloth. The night safari was another zoo entirely that we walked through and took a tram through in the dark. It was a little spooky at first but after I saw that the lions weren't free range then I was ok. Yesterday, the crew went to Pulau Ubin, a small undeveloped island that is part of Singapore. It was a lazy and ... read more

The last 2 nights have been party nights. Thursday we had a durian party at Silvia and Tsu Yang's apartment. 20 or so of karin's family came over to enjoy the pungent fruit that Anthony Zimmern of Bizzare Foods will not eat. You will get a fine of $1000 if you bring durian on public transit because it smells so bad. I had to try it and it wasn't too bad. Weird texture but tasted somewhat sweet. Last night we celebrated Karin's grandpa's 80th bday. He had 70 of his closest friends and relatives out for a tasty 9 course dinner. We then went out to the famous Raffles Hotel. I'll post more later. We went to the zoo yesterday and night safari. I better wrap this up. We are about to go to a rural ... read more

I've never blogged before, so bear with me. Since a few days have already passed, I'll just give a few highlights from my perspective. Our two week vacay in Singapore started with a day long plane ride. Anyone who knows the relationship Josh has with airplanes recognizes that it felt MUCH longer than 24 hours in the airplane. The first leg to Moscow was the worst. I held Josh's sweaty hand for quite some time as he held back tears. We had discussions of finding "inner peace" and determined that the fear he harbors revolves around turbulence. I felt a little silly at times during those discussions, but I tried my best to be supportive and patient. That's love. The second leg went much better. I think he tired himself out quite a bit and managed ... read more

We're about to begin day 4 in Singapore. It's 13 hours ahead of back home if you were wondering. Yesterday we went to the resort island of Sentosa. It's a small island part of Singapore with lots of tourists attractions. We rode a cable car across the bay and got some great views of the city and ocean to Sentosa. Karin's uncle, Aloysius, treated us to a tour of a nice aquarium and a 3d theatre. Karin and I then strolled down to Siloso beach and lounged for a few hours. The scenery was really picturesque. Only thing that could have made it better would have been if I could have had a monkey join me with a cold beverage under the palm trees. I still have yet to spot a wild monkey. We spent the ... read more

We just completed our first two days in Singapore. It's been a great time so far with Karin and her family. Yesterday we arrived at 6 am and went to Silvia E.E.'s apartment to relax before we went out to hit the town. She has great views of a nice neighborhood from her rooftop terrace. Hopefully i can post some pictures later this week. We went to meet up with Karin's brother, Christian, and his wife. Then we went to meet Karin's uncle, grandpa and great aunt. We had some good Thai food for lunch and walked around town for a bit. Jet lag caught up with me around 3 o'clock and I was only able to power through til about 7 last night. Got a good 12 hours sleep and we hit the city all ... read more

Hey everyone we are in moscow. After a 12 hour plane ride we're halfway there. I still really dislike flying but I started to get Over it and slept for about an hour. Singapore air is 1st rate. Karin's taking advantage of the extra room at the air port and was doing lots of stretches. Well I think they're checking us in. This is one crowded and hot airport can't wait to leave for Singapore .... read more

Tomorrow afternoon Karin and I are departing for Singapore, and of course I haven't been able to go to sleep yet. Neither one of us has started packing, but I'm pretty sure jorts and my American flag hat are in order for the plane ride over. This trip I'm once again determined to fit everything into one carry on bag. Can't be that hard right? We'll fly 12 hours to Moscow for a short layover, then onto Singapore for another 10 hour ride arriving monday morning Singapore time. We'll try to keep the blog updated, interesting, and full of pictures throughout the trip. I'm looking forward to meeting Karin's relatives and seeing the sights. I've been told that we'll be making trips to Malaysia and Indonesia along the way, and I believe the odds are in ... read more

Europe June 8th 2010

It was a peaceful last day on the continent for josh and me. Once we made it to the hotel, there were a fair amount of naps as there was a lack of better options for the most part. We did manage to go to the alcampo next door which was the biggest grocery store I've ever seen. We ate at a fast food restaurant that specialized in fried chicken for our last real meal in Europe. Tomorrows an early morning, so I'll be brief. Just wanted to say thanks to everybody who read and commented on the blog. Even though we're having a lot of fun, it gets lonely sometimes and it's nice to hear from home. Even though I'm not ready for the triple digit heat, I am looking forward to seeing everybody.
