90,000+ kilometres 10,000 photos 20 countries 15ish months 5 continents 4 laptop chargers 3 cameras 2 gallons of bug spray 1 fantastic trip My last entry: So, my original plan was Guatemala and then Belize. Well that changed to Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras. If you are dying to know what I did in these countries, read on! Guatemala featured volcano, historic towns, Mayan jungle ruins, caves, rivers and thousands of bats flying around me as they left a cave at dusk. Guatemala is probably my favourite central American country. Once you look beyond all the guns and McDonalds, there is a fun, friendly, interesting country to explore. Mexico featured amazing beaches, waiting for kite worthy wind that never came, Mayan ruins, trying to avoid hoards of tourists, and some of the most amazing diving experiences you ... read more

Hello Reader, Hope this blog page finds you well. I am sure the question on the nations lips is 'what has John been doing for the last 3 weeks?'. Well, lucky you are about to find out. I have been in Costa Rica. I was meant to have been kiteboarding for most of my time, but unfortunately nature had different plans for me, as there was no wind. So I did some other things around Costa Rica instead. These things included: Watching volcanoes irrupt, Diving, Spotting snakes, sloth, porcupines, tarantula, humming birds and millions of other wild animals, Soaking in geothermal hot pools, Kayaking, Trying to avoid hordes of american tourists, Relaxing on the beach. But the two main activities I did (unsuccessfully) during Costa Rica's wet season were avoiding torrential down pours and avoiding getting ... read more

South America » Bolivia June 26th 2010

Bolivia is an extreme place. Extremes of weather, landscapes, poverty and adventures. This is my last stop before leaving South America and heading up to Central America. There were 3 themes to the Bolivia I saw. These where; Jungle When you think of South America you generally think of rain-forests. I haven't really seen that much of the jungles till now, so I saw the Bolivian jungle and pampas (big flat bit next to the jungles) in style. Stayed at some eco-lodges and hacked my way through the undergrowth in search of wildlife (okay that is a lie, there was no hacking, but I did see a fair bit of wildlife from the comfort of boats and well laid paths). Also met Jen in the Pampas, who was my travel buddy for most of Bolivia, thanks ... read more

South America May 15th 2010

Hello reader, hope this web page finds you well. This is a few words about my time around the middle of the planet in Ecuador. I had lots of great experiences in Ecuador, which if you read on you learn about. Galapagos Probably the most expensive 12 days of my trip, but totally worth it. What did I see and do there I hear you ask, this: -Dived (or is it dove?) with hammerhead sharks -Snorkelled with loads of cool animals like Manta Rays, Sea lions, Turtles, Sharks, Penguins (yes penguins at the equator, how mental) and many other cool sea creatures. -Saw lots of volcanoes, Tortoises, Iguanas, Frigate birds and Boobies (stop sniggering, I am talking about the sea bird) -Sailed (well motored) around on a boat for 8 days -Took every opportunity to wind-up ... read more

South America April 23rd 2010

Hola Amegos! It has been a little while since I last filled you in on what I have been up to, and I have been up to a fair bit. Here is the quick version; Travelled up to Peru through Argentina and Chile, met up with friends from home, saw some stuff, said good bye to friends, heading further north. If that was enough detail for you go follow the link at the bottom of this page to look at the pretty pictures, if not here is a slightly longer version: After returning from Easter Island I needed to work my way north to Peru to meet up with friends from home who were coming out to meet me for a couple of weeks. On the way I stopped at a few places and did a ... read more

South America March 14th 2010

Well reader I thought that I had this blog entry in the bag and then everything changed, so it is a bit of a 2 part tale. Pt1. Buenos Aires was ok, a bit too European (which is fine in Europe) for my liking. But was fun, and a highlight was seeing a Boca Junior game. Poor football but great atmosphere, and a real change from the Withdean! Had a couple of relaxing days in Montevideo, Uruguay. Much more my cup of tea. A real tropical feel to the place. Then off to the Iguazu Falls, which saw from both the Brazilian and Argentinean sides. A truly amazing place and even more so because you can get so close to them (I got a couple of good soakings). My pictures really donĀ“t do the place justice. ... read more

South America February 3rd 2010

Patagonia is a funny kind of a place, for the most part it is empty, flat and dry. You can go for 30 hours through flat arid landscapes with nothing but the odd boarder checkpoint (as I did), but when you do get to something it is always something truly amazing. It is as if mother nature is making up for the boring bits by giving you some of the most extreme eye candy you will ever see. As you can see from the map I went from the top to the bottom of Patagonia and then back up again. For those interested I visited; Baraloche, El Calafate, El Chilten, Puerto Natales, Urshaia (the end of the world) and Puerto Madryn. I landed in South America in Santiago and spent a week learning a bit of ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island December 24th 2009

I wasn't sure about coming to the North Island after everyone saying that it is rubbish compared to the South. Even the woman who checked my passport at the airport told me to spend all my time in the south. After just over a month here I think that the north is given an unfair bad wrap. Sure there are less national parks, more people and a much more irritating vocabulary, but there are lots of outdoor adventures to be had if you look. Anyway, I like the north island, stop picking on it. So enough with all this, what did I get up to? Well read on and you will find out. NZ South Island, sun, showers, wind, heat, cold, rain, hail and sheep One of the first things I realised on landing in New Zealand was that I needed some warmer clothes. Luckily I had a few days in Christchurch to get these and other supplies while I also looked for a car. The plan is buy a car drive it for a couple of months and then sell it before leaving for about the same as I paid, hopefully this will work out this way. After a lot of searching, kicking tyres and looking at many what can only be termed as 'clamped out bangers' I found the one. A 92 Subaru Legacy GT 4WD, that right a station wagon, and a 4 wheel drive one at that, how cool. (as a note Kiwi's don't seem ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria October 22nd 2009

I always liked Victoria, but now I know I love Victoria. Don't go slitting your wrists girls, I am talking about the great Australian state of Victoria. This is the 1st and only time on my trip that I have visited somewhere I have been before, and I am glad I am here. Not only it is great to see my old pals Shane and Lisa, but also I am able to see a lot more of Melbourne and Victoria than I did last time. So, where I went: -to the horse races and sneaked into a VIP area we really shouldn't have been in, -to the Serento area, which is like Sandbanks (Bournemouth alumni would agree), -wine tasting and only drank Pinot in homage to Sideways, -to the Grampians national park, which is like the ... read more
