What a contrast. Yesterday we were getting drenched doing our 4 hour trip down the river and today the weather has been brilliant whilst we were doing our tour of Cusco. Temperature in the upper 20s and no humidity. We are in one of the highest cities in the world and they say as we are nearer the sun the hotter it gets. At this height the effects of altitude sickness kicks in and it is important not to rush about but just do everything slowly. Got a bit of a slight background headache but getting use to that. Drinking plenty of coca tea which apparently helps. Did the Inca Cusco trip today. Cusco was the Inca capital before the Spanish conquered Peru in 1533. The Incas had an advanced civilisation in the 16th century and ... read more

Arrived in Cusco today from the jungle town of Puerto Maldonado after spending 3 days at the jungle lodge known as Refugio Amazonas. What an experience. First of all we had to take a 4 hour boat trip up the River Tambopata. The boat was a glorified canoe with a large engine at the back and rolled from side to side. Life jackets were provided. The lodge is a large timber structure running over 2 floors and completely open plan. The bedrooms are in 4 blocks adjacent to the main building. There is no electricity, hot water or doors. All very communal. A powerful torch is a necessity at night. During the day the temperature rose to about 38C and the humidy was in the region of 80. Needless to say our jungle treks started very ... read more

In morning got taxi to part of Lima called Barranco. Use to be a playground for the rich but its former glory has faded. The La Ermita church has its front facade standing but the remainder was devasted by the 1940 earhquake. Found the only remaining electric tram in Peru and took a 800 metre ride with a party of peruvian school children. Afternoon spent on tour of the highlights of old Lima, including the main square of Plaza Major which was very busy and was being prepared for a pop concert. A very heavy presence of police and security people. Visited the Cathedral which is in a good condition as it was rebuilt after the 1940 quake. Contains the remains of the Spaniard who led the conquest of the Incas. Not the most popular of ... read more

After leaving Heathrow at 18.50 yesterday finally arrived in Peru at 6.00 local time this morning being 12.00 UK time. Came down through a bank of clouds to see an overcast city. No sun here today. Meet the tour representative after going through Customs and Immigration. He was also waiting for another 3 who are also touring with the group. One is called Fred who is from Cheltenham. I am staying in a hotel called Sonesta Posadas Del Inca in what they call the posh part of Lima known as Miraflores. Very helpful staff and were good enough to let me into the room at 8.30am. Very comfortable room with everything I need and after a refreshing shower crawled into bed to catch up on all the sleep I lost during the flight. Up at 11.00 ... read more

Sitting in Terminal 3 waiting to board the flight to Madrid. Then have to transfer to get a flight to Lima which leaves at 30 minutes past midnight. Should arrive in Lima early Thursday morning. The problem then will be trying to convince the hotel that I am a worthy cause for them to let me have the room early. Terminal 3 departure lounge is far removed from civilisation as I know it in Totnes. I would descibe it as a human marshalling yard where all the inhabitants are fed and watered before they are transported off to another part of the planet. There is plenty of eating, drinking, snoozing and texting. What did we do before the pc and mobile telephone. Here's hoping that Man Utd get a good result in Moscow this evening followed ... read more

Nearly packed and ready to go. Trying to find space for all the various gadgets such as laptop, leads, camera, ipod and all the bits and pieces that go with them. Never had this problem years ago. Need to find a safe place for the 3 boxes of malaria tablets that cost £100. Have to start taking them tomorrow and then right through until 7 days after my return. The book I ordered from Amazon has arrived and so just started reading ''The Conquest of the Incas''. George has lent me ''The Motorcycle Diaries'' which is all about Che Guevara's trip though South America. He went through Peru and so will be interested to read that chapter. Catching the train from Totnes from Totnes at 11-00 tomorrowand fly out from Heathrow to Lima via Madrid arriving ... read more

Ordered ''The Conquest of the Incas'' by John Hemming on Amazon as I understand it provides an excellent history of the Spanish Conquest of Peru. Must get to grips on the history of Peru so as to really appreciate the country and its people. Just hope the book arrives before I depart. Done a few mundane things such as buying a decent torch, which will probably be needed in the jungle part of the trip, and getting an electrical adaptor.... read more

Just joined up as I am off to Peru on 21 October. Thought this would be a useful tool in not only keeping a log but will enable me to let friends and family know how I am getting on. Really looking forward to the trip and seeing a part of the world I have never been to before... read more
