In morning got taxi to part of Lima called Barranco. Use to be a playground for the rich but its former glory has faded. The La Ermita church has its front facade standing but the remainder was devasted by the 1940 earhquake. Found the only remaining electric tram in Peru and took a 800 metre ride with a party of peruvian school children.
Afternoon spent on tour of the highlights of old Lima, including the main square of Plaza Major which was very busy and was being prepared for a pop concert. A very heavy presence of police and security people. Visited the Cathedral which is in a good condition as it was rebuilt after the 1940 quake. Contains the remains of the Spaniard who led the conquest of the Incas. Not the most popular of chaps round here. Then on to the convent and church of San Francisco which is doing well to withstand the test of time and the earhquakes
The centre of Old Lima has some buildings it can be proud of but it also has many that have seen better days and have been badly neglected. The city is being economically challenged in polite terms
Lima is a very busy city with traffic in abundance. The taxis and buses, which are many, seem to have been on the road for eternity and fight each other for space throgh the congested streets. Tomorrow I escape to the jungle!!!
