Dew Pond

looks like a big puddle
Sorry John, but I couldn't see anything other than a big puddle. What will they be used for when restored? Did it look inviting enough for you to cool off in? Maybe I'd need to see it in person to make further comment. Just an ignorant Kiwi perhaps!

John, loved the pic of the "sensible sheep" keeping out of the sun. Made me think that it would be great to have that problem right now!! This is a long weekend, Queens Birthday Weekend and the weather is very, very cold. Chilly, frosty mornings, but sometimes we get some sun later in the day. Keep walking, the journey looks so interesting.

Steying to Falmer
Way to go John and glad you got some good weather to finish your trip in. Love Alex

Hope the sun keeps shining
Hi John. I've been enjoying your Blog. Looks like a fantastic walk. The Cocking to Amberley section looked particularly nice. Didn't a certain larger and (theoretically) far superior club once struggle to beat Brighton and Hove in a Cup Final in 1983? Best regards Paddy

Told you Emma would know all about the lapwings. I see that Sally in NZ wants to know about the yellow fields which I guess are planted with rapeseed. Looks so spectacular but not so fragrant up close. How old were the OAPs? 60? 61? 62-ish or something like that! Don't forget the hat and sun cream with all this sunshine. (A wifely comment, that.) Lots of love xxxxxx

Lapwings
Hi John, lucky you to see lapwings! I think they're declining because of changes of farming practices. They are on the endangered animal list in the UK. You can find out a bit more about why they're declining here http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/l/lapwing/decline_and_conservation.aspx Sounds like you're having a lovely time! Am very envious (especially as the weather has been glorious here today, and I wish I were out in it an not stuck in this office! See you soon and best of luck Emma xx

I expect Emma will know about the lapwings. Shakespeare mentions them in "Much Ado About Nothing" with the entrance of Beatrice. I suppose they were a much more common sight then. "For look where Beatrice, like a lapwing runs Close by the ground, to hear our conference." V. nice to see a farmer's unsophisticated memorial on top of a hill. Makes a change from all the Lord Somebody-or-other's phallic obelisks that litter the countryside.

Brilliant!
Hi John - a lovely part of the world - I'm envious - though not so sure about tramping up and down those hills in iffy weather. I have good friends in Worthing and Brighton so often visit down there and know it well. I tend to go for the shopping ... Lynne would adore (inc. Winchester) ... nuff said. Love Jane x

still more history!!
When I see something that dates back to 600BC then I know there is a huge amount of history there. What was in the fields which gave that lovely colour?

lots of history
Pleased to see that rain has stopped. Imagine all that history and seeing where the Romans marched. A bit dificult to comprehend from New Zeland where we seem to be such a young country.

Hi John - 100 miles seems a long way! It all started off so well and lovely pics. So sorry you had such a dreadful day yesterday - it was raining here too - English weather for you! We have had a nice day today and hope that you have too. Hope you are none the worse for your drenching. Good luck for the rest of the week. Love Jayne xx

Oh what a shame you got drenched! At least you managed to get a few nice shots in. I guess it's the luck of the draw. Fingers crossed for you for better weather today. I was in London yesterday and I got drenced but weather better today here. Went on a nice walk round Coate Water and Hodson. Keep up the good work - you are doing great! Lots of Love Alex

shame about the rain!!
Dear John...well done that angler and like most of them, I don't think the rain would deter any fisherman. Despite the rain, I think the thought that, tomorrow the sun will shine will spur you on. After all, it can't rain all the time....can it? !! At the moment, a lot of rain has fallen further up the South Island but we seem to have escaped the worst of it.
