Hi my name is Jess & I'm 22, I'm from beautiful sunny Queensland, Australia. I'm fun, outrageous, loud & will try anything at least once!

In April 2011 I am leaving my friends & family behind and making the move from Australia to Vancouver, BC. My travel goal is to visit every state of America & Canada before I turn 30.

This Blog will be following my adventures of travelling solo... from finding work to making friends to ticking off all the states on my map and the adventures & experiences they all bring. I'm so excited!!

Working 9-5 what a way to make a living.... good old Dolly Parton. Today I started my first day at Randstad Engineering where I will be a Resource Manager (candidate recruiter)... its a lovely office being all guys and 2 girls based on the south-side of False Creek near City Hall & for those of you who don't know where I mean ... its in Vancouver :-) Its going to be an interesting few months while i find my feet and learn the lingo... what is a pipe drafter & you want someone with CAD experience... does that mean they know how to drive a golf caddy?? Like i said lots of learning. But i'd rather that then be bored. Lucky for me my office is on the top floor of a mall... every girls dream ... read more

Nikki (friend I met in Vancouver) & I finally made it to the gorgeous Stanley Park today! We decided to take a stroll through the park have a bit of lunch & see what all the fuss was about. Well I was not prepared, firstly I wore flats/ballet style shoes, secondly I didn't wear sunscreen & thirdly we didn't hire bikes (because thats apparently the thing to do.... note for next time). We met at Waterfront and did the gorgeous walk along the Harbour looking at all the boats that we could only dream of owning, checking out the seaplane tours and then stopped by to see my new boyfriend the red man squatting. We made it to the entry of Stanley Park and just decided to take our time and stroll on through. There is ... read more

I went up to Capilano Suspension Bridge expecting to just see a bridge cross it & that would it. However I was pleasantly surprised it was much more then that. You do cross the bridge but they give you a full back ground on when it was built who has owned it an info on the Canadian Natives & the tribes who lived on the sight. So I am pretty cool and calm when it comes to heights (I did the Empire State building & only need to hold my exes hand for half the time up there) but when your crossing a suspension bridge THAT WOBBLES with every step you take it still gave me butterflies . Once I was on solid ground and on the other side there were different trails to walk around ... read more

My first week in Vancouver has come to an end & I can't believe how fast it has gone. I'm slowly settling in to my new home here in North Vancouver... I am living in this very cute little apartment... perfect for 1-2 ppl in a gorgeous location where I can see both the snow & the water. Unpacking is such a nesting task I love adding my personality to a new place and making it my own. I walked up to the grocery store and bought myself a few essentials before I do a proper shop for food. It was fun to see which food brands are international that I thought were only based in Australia... its also cool to see all the American/Canadian products... I wanted to buy the whole store just so i ... read more

Leaving Brisbane was different then I thought it would be, I thought I would be sad to say goodbye but it wasn't because I realised Brisbane will always be my home town. My loving parents & gorgeous girlfriends met me at the airport to say our final goodbyes (but in their words... I'll see you soon) after my mum hid her tears behind her sunglasses & one last hug from the girls I made my way down to the customs area -which almost was disaterous as I left my travel folder with B and she had to throw it down to me. A quick stamp here & there & I was done... with the excitement & adrenalin running through my veins I boarded the plane & I was off to Aukland in Part 1 of the ... read more

I swear there is an art to packing because if it was a test I would fail easily! Yesterday I started what seemed to be the endless task of packing my life in to 2 suitcases. I have moved in and out of home and from place to place & somehow that seemed so much easier. I began culling my belongings down to my essentials and then stating to myself over & over again "I can buy it when I get there" or "they have shoes in Canada". 48 hours later, after a trip down memory lane, a visit from a friend for support & after trying every space saving method I could possible think of then finally deciding to do the age old packing trick of sitting on my suitcases to squeeze them close while ... read more

Its getting closer... less than 2 weeks and I will be up in the air! One of the best things about being an Aussie is the ability to throw a party for no reason at all. I had my going away party last weekend & getting all my friends & family of all ages together to have a good old backyard party was just what I needed to get the excitement going. In true Australian fashion I had way too much to drink, but it was all in the name of training to keep up with the Canadians I am yet to meet. It was so great to see everyone & because there is no better party then a dress up party it was great to see the aussie flag & green & gold clothes... we ... read more

So today marked 5 weeks until I am up up and away to LA then on to Vancouver... it also turns out to be the day that I resigned from my job. I had been keeping this little secret of me moving to the other side of the world from my company since about June last year. Thats right 9 months of hushed conversations & "oh i'm just going to Sydney on a girls weekend" (I really went to do my Visa interview with the US Embassy). But I finally have the relief of them knowing. I have to say the butterflies that were in my stomach this morning were insane! The last time I was that nervous was the day I went for my drivers licence and that was much more stressful. Anyone who has ... read more
