Nyerere credited for making kiswahili a national language - a myth Hallo Dada wa blogu
I am writing in response of what you wrote on Nyerere day that he is credited for making Kiswahili a national language. This is a myth that keeps recurring, for he did not…
Kiswahili was already a national Language in Tanganyika, then Tanzania and Zanzibar long before Mwalimu, here is its history briefly…
Kiswahili was widely spoken throughout Tanganyika, far back during Arab dominance of the east afrikan coast- by way of trade, including slave etc…
After the Berlin conference (1884-85) the Germany started to rule Tanganyika as one land entity-together with Rwanda and Burundi. They found Swahili already an entrenched a lingua franca-being spoken large and wide. They decided to administer using the language, together with making it a medium of instructions in their “schules” schools that they introduced…
That was by the time when Nyerere was a pupil growing up…
May be they (Germans) are the ones to be rightly credited for making Kiswahili a National language..!!
But, May be it was seen not to be good to credit anything good to the colonial masters..?
Then came the UN selected British to come rule Tanganyika, after the ww2 of which the Germany lost the war and the colonies…
English language and mannerism were introduced, yet kiswahili remained a lingua franca…
And so during organizing & mobilizing for uhuru-political independence, Nyerere a young man then together with his colleague activists used Kiswahili to reach to the masses. All over (Tanganyika) people understood him/them without a translator…
So after independence it was a formality, effortlessly for him to declare it a National language, (how could it be otherwise?)
The fact is, any first president here could have done exactly that, why, it was a language that was already “national” here, and even transnational…
In Zanzibar that came to unite with Tanganyika in 1964, Kiswahili has been a national language and culture, not because of Nyerere…
It is spoken in Kenya especially its coast, Burundi, Uganda and eastern Congo…not because of Nyerere influence there…
Give credit where it’s due, there is a tendency (political one) to credit Mwalimu for everything good in Tanzania…even to those things that he didn’t do…
That is one thing that he didn’t …
Its history before him that did that…
Addition: did you know that Kiswahili has two words for school?
One is shule borrowed from Germany’s schule..?
The other is skuli borrowed from English school…
The former is used widely in Tanzania mainland where the Germany colonized while the latter is widely used in Zanzibar where the british colonized, in collaboration with the Arabs…
Yet Swahili for classes is madarasa-again borrowed from Arabic madrasa-schools!!

Hello Sweetie Hi Sweetheart,I was soooo happy to see your blog and a most delightful one it was!!!! You were mentioning the email has ground to a halt. As far as me, I have been emailing but I think the person who hacks into your account is deleting them. He has constantly been on and the other day I sent you one wanting to know what to do with a letter from the school and when I didn't get a response I checked into your acct to see if it was there and it wasn't and neither was another I sent. I sent Ali an email telling him simply what is going on and asked him to let you see the email I sent him so you would know. I am working on trying to track this person so obviously I will let you know anything I find out. I hesitate to use your hotmail acct bc I am really sure he is deleting what I send especially if it says I am working on it. I love you tonsssssssssss and I miss you tonsssssssssss. I hear you say that the country is in your blood. That is ok Sweetie. Whatever will be, will be!! Take care, mama xxoo
my non-work email address I forgot to include this!

Relief and oodles of love My dear, dear Jackie-
First off, my heart just about stopped when i read this entry. Enough with that though...all i will say is that I am so very gald that you are safe and well and I am so sorry that you and your family had to endure such an evil and sick "joke." Oh Darlin' I am so glad that you are okay. Better than okay acutally, that you are doing well.
I don't have your email address at home, so I am hoping you will get this post. I so want to chat with you and am sorry that I have been out of touch. Work has been nothing but hell (we can talk more about that later).
I loved the card you sent so much - I can't believe you are a world away and would think to send ME a card...how very like you to be in a foreign country and worrying about me. It means a lot. The card itself is beautiful and I will imnplore you to buy some and bring them home to me (of course I will repay you!) I would love a few packets in fact - that grassroots stuff just makes my heart full. Especially if it involves women and children:)
I tried to call you this AM but I have the wrong number...011 255 246 986 442...if you send me the right one I will definitely call you.
I miss you but I love your blog (gawd you are an excellent writer!! A new career perhaps?) and I am so very proud of you...what an amazing experience (save one terrible, unthinkable experience). Don't let the senseless evil of one idiot stop you from exploring everything and moving forward in your journey. Your time there is too important.
Everybody loves you and Peggy says "hello."
I am sending you a big hug and want you to know just how amazing I think you are! And I can't wait to chat with you.
Big love,
Kali
You're doing so much! I'm in awe!
While the wimp-in-me revels that I was even able to go to the dentist by myself yesterday and wonders how the heck you are managing, the permanent-student, the fun-person-in-waiting and my sense of adverture is SO incredibly jealous!
Thanks for keeping me updated.
Beautiful Lady I so get the idea of what body image is about...it is so great that you have experienced a whole different culture in this area - you have lived much in such a short time already - I do believe this will change so much in your life - and one can hope that you will identify as the beautiful woman that you are, I have always thought so.
Hey Jackie.
Sounds like you're up to your eyeballs in "culture". Are you finding you're settling in a little better now? Sounds like its been a huge shock. I know I could have never done it, though after reading your entry I'm thinking African men may be onto something and I may just need to move!
Best of luck and I'll ttys.
tap-in Hello Sweetheart,
I will email you later but just wanted to say how totally enjoyable your blogs are. I LMAO a lot!!! I love to hear about the people's quaint ways such as hand holding and of course loving your hair. Don't we all!!!! I love you so much and I pray blessings upon this trip, mama xxoo

Hi Jackie Wow-the world traveller already! What a great writer you are. I love reading what you are doing, although I'm not going to have time to read it all, you are too prolific.
Do you mind if I send this on to my daughter, Erica? She plans to live and work overseas at some point and this first-hand account of a first experience would be fascinating to her, I think.
As I read what you have written, I remember all my first impressions and experience of travelling, too. Like when Father Benedict was meeting me at the Columbo Airport in Sri Lanka and was 45 minutes late, and I thought he might not show up. Then later that day, I introduced myself to him for the third time, not recognizing him after he changed his clothes - how terribly embarrassing! And the time Patrick and I were in the Carribean and Patrick caught a lizard, and it's tail came off! I didn't know that was a survival technique, that their tails come off so they can escape their predators, but that they quickly grow back again. Also the times I would ride in Father Benedict's old falling-apart jeep: my feet on the battery, able to see through the floor boards to the road, no horn, no windshild wipers, and certainly no seat belt! And Father Benedict driving like a maniac, right through the only stop lights in Columba, as I thought: "He's a man of God, hopefully we're in God's hands!"
Anyway, your time away will change you forever in ways you probably cannot imagine, as mine did. This is a good thing (not that I don't like you very much the way you are). I don't know how often I will be able to write something of this length, since this is my work email and I am always short of time here. Still, I will try to read your messages, and hopefully you will know I'm thinking of you often. All the best!
Peggy
Hi everybody, welcome to my first attempt at blogging. Here's a bit of background. I am a Canadian woman who has never been outside of North America in all her 35 years. But starting August 31 I am embarking on the adventure of my life. I will be in Tanzania for three and a half months, doing my second year field practicum in community development for a Master of Social Work degree. I hate heat, humidity, bugs and crawlly things, and I suffer from what could only be termed separation anxiety every time I leave home. I'm not the least bit adventurous. But I heard the call for Africa and ... full info
