What better way to celebrate finishing work in Hong Kong than with a holiday! A few days after the final farewells and preparing to move out, my friend Fiona and I set off to Thailand. Exiting Hong Kong in a most unglamorous fashion (pouring rain and in a hurry) we spent three hours on the plane to Bangkok, and had to work out what we wanted to do - it was going to be a very ad hoc trip. Wrapping things up in Hong Kong meant life was very busy, and we didn't get round to planning anything of our trip aside from the flight and the first night's accommodation! Arriving at our hostel in Bangkok, we wanted to get nearer to a beach, so at 2am that night/morning we booked a flight to Krabi! Five ... read more

And so it has to come to an end.... Chatteris employees are soon to be scattered around the world, moving on to new adventures. Last week was the final week at school, and time to say goodbye to all the kids. They were all very sweet and it was sad to say goodbye, especially when they didn't quite realise that I wasn't coming back. With everything coming to an end, it has been a very busy month! I made the most of my China visa before it ran out, getting some clothes tailored for my summer in London. Generally the evenings have been filled with coffees, drinks, and dinners with friends before we all sadly part ways. I spent a lovely weekend on Lantau Island in an amazing beach house. A friend hired the house through ... read more

Since returning from Borneo, things in Hong Kong have been fairly busy, and I've been enjoying life here, appreciating it all with the thought that I may be leaving it behind for I don't know how long. I've had more visitors - Jane and Karen were here for a few days last week, and we had some lovely meals and a good night at the Happy Valley races. At the moment, my brother David is here, so once again we are enjoying some nice meals in the evening after work, and had a good night out when he arrived. Thursday was labour day, a national holiday, so we enjoyed some dim sum and a trip to Stanley. Other goings on...I celebrated a friends' birthday on a junk boat trip round Victoria harbour which was great! We ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Mount Kinabalu April 1st 2008

At 4095 metres (13,435 ft) high, climbing Mount Kinabalu is not an easy task.... Myself, Sam and Ben began the adventure at 11am after meeting our guide and collecting our packed lunch, and thankfully, leaving our big rucksacks in the luggage room! Day one was a 6km trail, with markers at every half a kilometer to either spur us on, or demoralize us depending on the current frame of mind! We stopped at intervals for a drink, but it was best to keep going because stopping for too long made it hard to start going again! Lunch was a welcome break at 4km, and then the remaining 2km of the day were a little tougher as it was steeper and more of a 'rugged' path with steps and stones to negotiate. Climbing through the clouds was ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu March 31st 2008

Over the past 7 months, I have been trying to make the most of three very cool things....school holidays, budget airlines, and being located in Hong Kong. This easter, I took the opportunity to travel to Borneo. Flying from Macau to Kota Kinabalu, I spent 9 days in Sabah, the Malaysian part of Borneo. Myself and 2 friends enjoyed the sunshine and had a nice break from Hong Kong. One of the major parts of the trip was climbing mount Kinabalu, but that was so major it deserves a blog of its own, so check out the next blog! Kota Kinabalu (KK) is close to some lovely islands. Only 20 minutes away on a ferry, and we were on some picturesque beaches with azure waters and some good snorkeling. Thankfully I was not in the water ... read more

Asia » Singapore March 16th 2008

My latest little adventure was a trip to Singapore! Thursday last week was due to be sports day, but due to an outbreak of influenza, all schools have been closed and so I have began my Easter holidays early. We had the Friday off school anyway, so my colleagues and I decided to make the most of our long weekend and go somewhere…Singapore! Jake, Ben and I flew out on Thursday evening from Hong Kong, and it took about 4 hours to fly South to Singapore - the most Southern place I have now been, and not too far from the equator! Arriving late, we just got a taxi to our hostel and went for a short stroll and the guys had a durian and some food. There was a durian stand on the road side, ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Sha Tin March 5th 2008

I thought it would be nice to tell you a bit more about my work, seen as that is where I spent a lot of my time in HK, so here goes - an average (if there is one!) day at my Primary School in Sha Tin! I generally set my alarm for 06.45 and hit snooze! Then once I am out of the door I catch the 7.45 bus from across Nathan road to Sha Tin City One. Once I clock in, I head up to the 3rd floor where the staff room is, and prepare for the day! My classroom is on the 6th floor, so I go up there to organise my classroom and set up the chairs, and gather my resources. My first lesson is usually 09.05 and each lesson is 35 ... read more

It's been a while since the last entry, so I thought it was time to fill you in on what happened at the end of February! Just two nights after I arrived back from Thailand, my Mum arrived in HK, so once again I was busy being a tourist around town! We had a great time and got up to lots of fun things! We started her visit with a bizarre restaurant, that would only survive in a few places in the world...'Modern Toilet'! We sat on toilets, ate over a sink, drank from mini urinals, and ate out of bathtubs and toilets. The walls were decorated with toilet lids, and it was all very bizarre, but fun! We survived the cable car up to the Big Buddha - it had been out of action for ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ko Chang February 14th 2008

A five hour drive and a one hour ferry from Bangkok, and I was on a quiet, tropical island in the East of Thailand! Koh Chang (Elephant Island) was the perfect relaxation and a great place for a beach holiday! I spent a few days by the beach, by the pool, in the sun - a welcome break from Hong Kong's cold weather! I had a massage on the beach, listening to the waves - everything was just lovely, and very relaxing. My flatmate and I stayed in a lovely resort - the Chang Park Resort and Spa on Kai Bae Beach. We had a cute little bungalow, and it was the first time I had slept under a mosquito net, which was pretty cool...and useful as there were some mossies around, and geckos! The pool ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok February 13th 2008

Thanks to Chinese New Year, I had another holiday from school, so this time I was headed for Thailand! Flying from Macau to Bangkok, stepping out into some warm air was a welcome break from the HK cold! Our short visit to Bangkok began with the sky train and a tuk tuk ride and a boat along the river...all to get us to the Grand Palace. We had some fresh cut pineapple from a street vendor...what a country! mmmm! I ate a lot of pineapple and mango this holiday! The Grand Palace was, well..grand! It was impressive - very ornate, gold and fancy, with lots of bright colours. We saw a Jade Buddha and a throne hall too. When you go inside some of the temples, you have to remove your shoes and there are signs ... read more
