We had a nice relaxing day. It was only about 150 k from Queenstown to Te Anau. Juanita and I took the Kingston Flyer. It is a really neat old steam train. I have put in a couple of pictures. Our friend and guide, Ron Head is a real RR person and spends 2 days a week rebuilding a 1900 coach car. Te Anau is a beautiful little town. Our motel is right on the lake. We booked on a noon boat in Milford Sound. Kiwi word for the day is Take Away or what we call Carry Out food. ... read more

Today we just sort of relaxed and recharged. There is not too many pictures because I forgot the camera battery charger in Wellington. Fortunately a camera shop was able to recharge it. We were also able to get the wash done and take a nice nap in the afternoon. We went out to one of the Bungy jumping area. No way is this guy going to try it. It looks like fun on TV but in reality, it is a bit much. Tomorrow it is off to Te Anau and then the drive up to the Milford Sound. We are going down to Kingston and take a short train trip on the Kingston Flyer. It is a steam train built around 1915. Kiwi word for the is Loo. This is the bathroom. ... read more

We had a beautiful ride through the mountains this morning. Everywhere you looked there were waterfalls. Once we got over the Haast Pass it was beautiful and sunny. Queenstown is really beautiful. Our motel is just off the lake near downtown. Ron is congratulating himself on his wonderful choice of motels. We plan on staying two nights and then we will go to Te Anau for 2 nights. From Te Anau we will go up to the Milford Sound and probably take a boat out into the sound. Went to see the jet boats go through the gorges in 6” of water. Kiwi word for the date is Rates. This is your real estate taxes. ... read more

I finally spelled Haast correctly. Could not find it in the guide books because I thought it was Hast. Oh well. It is just a wide spot in the road. The rain came down in sheets last night. We went for a walk to see the Fox Glacier. They said it was 5 min. walk, like hell it was. Maybe a mountain goat to do it in 5 min.s but it took about 45 min.s for Juanita. I do have to say, I admired her determination and it was well worth it when we got there. Juanita crashed and burned about 8 PM and was awake at 7 AM. Last night, in the rain we gassed up the car and then asked about a grocery store. They sent us 5 K down the road. It stopped ... read more

Today we drove up from Westport to Karamea about 95K. It is truly the Wild, Wet West. There are a lot of old gold and coal mines. They call it coaling in clouds. We then drove down to Greymouth. This is the largest city on the West Coast of the South Island (About 13,000). It has the feel of the Iron Range towns in Minnesota, sort of Virginia, MN on steroids (with the mountains and the Tasman Sea). We went to an old Union Hotel for supper and as the Kiwi would say, “had a Lovely meal”. Kiwi word for the day is slicker. This is what you put in your Chilly Bin to keep it cold. ... read more

Attached are a few pictures of on our trip to the South Island. The trip went well and we are set up in a nice motel in Westport on the NW end of the South Island. We came through the Marlborough wine growing area, probably 60 k of grape vines outside of Blenheim following the Wairau River valley. Kiwi word for the day is POME. This is used to identify people from England or people who identify with England. Example might be, that’s what a POME would say. It stands for Prisoner of Mother England. There is also a bar on the Kapiti Coast called the Flaming POME. ... read more

For the past 5 days we have been staying with our friend Ron Head. Ron lives on the kapiti coast just north of Wellington. It has been great to Ron again, he stayed with us in 2005. The Kapiti Coast is named because just off the coast is Kapiti Island. Ron lives right on the beach. Went to a Friendship Force meeting. The Kapiti Coast FF is hosting a group from Hanover, Germany. They really know how to do up their meeting. Lovely supper, wine etc. Tomorrow we will leave for the south island. We sail from Wellington to Picton at 8:30 AM. We have to get at 5:30 AM, not Juanita favorite time of the day. Kiwi word for the day is Chilly Bin. This is picnic cooler. Attached is a few pictures of the ... read more

New Zealand thoughts & observations 1. Language - it takes awhile to pick up on the pronunciation and terms. Some examples: W sounds like da Kiwis tend to raise their voice as they finish talking, often I am trying to figure out what the question is and they are simply saying I’m done talking, your turn. 2. Terms - Kiwis have a lot of terms that are different than US English and for the most part very descriptive. An example is an auto body shop is where the panel beaters work. The shop is called a panel beaters shop. Kiwis always use the term scheme for plan. They have saving schemes, retirement schemes and business schemes. A section is basically what we call a building lot. There are enough of these that are just sort of ... read more

Day 12-14 Tuesday, Wed & Thursday 2/24-26 We had a beautiful drive down from Taupo to Napier. Taupo is on Lake Taupo which is a big lake that was created from an explosion and which literally blew off the top of a mountain. The drive down to Napier was nice and we actually went 50k without mountains. I think it is about 150K from Taupo to Napier. The Napier/Hastings area is really interesting and beautiful. It is a big Wine producing area. Next time you buy NZ wine and see Hawks Bay on it, it comes from this area. Napier and Hastings are on the Pacific Ocean (East side of the North Island). Both towns feature a lot of Art Deco buildings. In fact, Napier is known as the Art Deco City. This was caused by ... read more
