Day 5 - Day of the Cremation There are two ceremonial kings of Bali, one in Ubud and one in the northern part of the island. Indonesia is a republic, but some of the ruling families have retained inherited leadership symbolically. Burial tradition on Bali is to have a ceremonial cremation months after a person has died; the body is kept in the home until then. The burial area for royalty is a short distance from our hotel in Ubud. We went to the cremation ceremony of the northern king today. A kingly cremation only happens about once a decade. I am glad I went, but the next cremation I go to will be my own. The cremation was a short distance from our hotel in Ubud but we decided to take the cars to the ... read more

Days 3 & 4 We now have almost everyone checked into the main hotel (SRI Bungalows-Ubud, Bali). Ken and Lan Tran have taken off on a motor bike for parts unknown. I think you will enjoy Paul’s pictures of the hotel and the Arma art gallery. Our guides’ father and uncle are featured in the gallery. Tomorrow we are going to the cremation of the King, a very big deal. A number of people have asked how I chose the people to go on the trip -- good question. My first criteria was color (personality), secondly was independence and third flexibility. After two days there is no question I have succeeded on the color and independence criteria while flexibility remains an open issue. Our Ambassadors are really a neat group of interesting, very nice and colorful ... read more

Day 2 Today is Sat. Oct. 30th. The reason I am relaying this bit of surprising information is because it is surprising to me and I just figured it out. By the way, in the US it is Friday Oct. 29th. I find it is important to center yourself, not metaphysically but where you are in terms of date and time. Made, Wyman, and Darsana (our guides) took their newfound friends to Pemaksan Barong Tegaltamu to see a classic Balinese dance that is the perfect time capsule incorporating the spirituality, culture, humor and history of these beautiful and gentle people. Rather than me outlining the 5 act play, Paul Martin has provided us with a photo essay. We then went to a Batik exhibit and store. Batik is a uniquely Indonesian art form that most everyone ... read more

Day 1 It was a long day of traveling but we have already had e-mails from our scouts (Patricia & Carol Hall) that all is well and the hotel, guides, etc. are excellent. We were sure lucky to get in contact with these guides through Bill and Mary Cunningham. They are three brothers who are excellent artists and guides and drive to make a living. Everyone in Bali is either royalty or an artist. When the Muslims forced the Hindus out of Java the artistic and royalty went to Bali in the 16th and 17th century. I left yesterday and went through LA and then had a 13 hour flight to S. Korea. I will be meeting Paul Martin, Linda and Patt here in Seoul and then we will get to Bali just after midnight. Korean ... read more

Day 10 - Sunday June 6 Cleaned the cottage and met the plane and the new adventures. Got the plane unloaded and loaded for the flight back to Nakinia. The Wagonmaster insisted that the Rookie sit up frount for the 30 min. ride back to Nakina. Then Roundbuff, Johnboy and The Rookie made a run for the border since Johnboy is still gamefully employed and expected at the office on Monday morning. Glen, Kermit and Chuck had a liesurely ride back. Roger and Tom had car trouble and spent the night in Grand Maris. Conclusion: Lake Onaman is our Ashram. It quiets the soul while putting us in touch with our God and Mother Nature. The Cast: Roger Wiste aka Wagonmaster aka Kahuna John Manders aka Johnboy Dan Manders aka Roundbuff Chuck Pettipiece aka dawgfish Tom ... read more

Day 9 Saturday June 5 We decided to have a big bacon/egg breakfast since it was cold and drizzilly in the AM. Glen (2N) cooked the eggs & bacon while The Rookie provided potatoes. After breakfast, it was just a lovely day with lots of fish and a lot of fishy stories. The day topped off with a steak fire. The assault on the beer and the liquor was completed and we were going to fly back to Nakinia a bit lighter and throughly refreshed. ... read more

Day 8 - Friday June 4 Had a little rain last night. A few pots were needed to catch the rain in the cottage. The Rookie finally got some Walleye beads for 3 Walleyes over 20”. Glen (2N) was the master guide for the Rookie. The largest Walleye was caught by the “The Frog” Kermit, his first apprehence on the trophy shirt. This year is the Frogs first year back since moving to Califorina 8 years ago. Kermit definitly brings a Californa Fruit Fly atmosphere after his long sojourn in LaLa land. Since there were no Northerns over 30 inches, the Wagonmaster decided to postphone the Northern award. ... read more
