Geo: 10.7679, 106.697Arrived safely after 16 hours in the air. Ten hours to Tokyo and an additional six to Ho Chi Minh City. The Boeing 787-8 is a very nice plane and JAL staff were great. We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel. Even at 10:30 at night the streets were busy with taxis and motorbikes performing an interesting ballet on wheels - glad I was not driving. The Hong Vina Luxury Hotel is a small boutique type of hotel but we didn't see much last night. Breakfast is supposed to be at the rooftop restaurant. Next day we had breakfast on the rooftop deck and then a stroll around the neighbourhood. I think we are in the area where most people have their motorbikes serviced as this seems to be the activity ... read more

Geo: 53.625, 10.0106We returned to Hamburg today. It seemed that once one crosses the German border the speed of the traffic goes up by 20 - 30 KPH. Considering the limit was 110k before the border you can imagine what the driving is like - especially when you see cars like a Nissan Micra doing 130K. Thankfully it is a divided highway but lots of trucks. The GPS located the hotel easily. We checked in and then got some gas before returning the car to the airport. Check-in was smooth and the hotel sent a van to get us from the airport. We are only about 5 minutes from the airport. Checked in with the airlines online and have our boarding passes on our phones so tomorrow morning the van will take us to the airport ... read more

Geo: 55.3703, 10.4497We woke up to rain again today. We drove into Odense because our hotel is over 5K from downtown. We tried parking in a lot but our credit cards would not work (not Danish VISA) so drove around until I found some free parking. Our decision to stay in Odense was because this is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. We visited the museum which is very good. The number and variety of artifacts from his life are very extensive. He was certainly an interesting and well travelled person who lived until age 70 which is better than most at that time. Interestingly it was noted that he suffered with toothaches a good part of his life. He started life very poor and schooling was limited. His father was originally a shoemaker who died ... read more

Geo: 55.3704, 10.4498It was cool and windy when we left Copenhagen. There was some light rain during the night. On our way to Roskilde the weather remained much the same. Roskilde is a very pretty town at the end of a Danish Fjord. There is another Viking Museum there. We didn't go in because we have already been to others. The cathedral in Roskilde is quite impressive and dominates the landscape. We couldn't go in because it is Sunday and there were services in the morning. We continued on to Odense crossing a bridge (18K - $40) which links East and West Denmark. Pretty windy on the bridge which is 4K longer than the Confederation Bridge. I imagine the ferry crossings in the past must have been pretty rough here. At one point the rain began ... read more

Geo: 55.7106, 12.5659I can't recall when I have walked so much in a short period of time. Likely it was back when I was in my teens. We decided to go to the National Museum which is basically a day excursion. The museum is terrific with all sorts of displays. It is housed in what was once a castle which has seen several renovations. My pictures are limited because there is so much to see and many items are behind glass. We spent about 5 hours in the museum. The ground floor traces the history of Denmark from about 13,000 BC to 1050 AD. The first floor covers the Danish Middle Ages and the Renaissance as well as the Prince's Palace, the Royal Collection of Coins and Medals and the Peoples of the Earth display. The ... read more

Geo: 55.7105, 12.5656Thankfully the weather continues to be pleasant although it is cooler. Autumn comes early in this part of the world. We are at almost the 56 parallel which is the same as Fort St. John. The leaves here are starting to change already. We are just now starting to understand the layout of the city. It is very confusing because of the waterways and streets which seem to run at many different angles. We also became very aware why so many people cycle. The inner city was in deadlock today. At one point we saw about 10 city buses in a row caught in the traffic. It is compounded by the fact that there are many infrastructure projects underway and streets are torn up. Walking past some of the ditches one can understand why this ... read more

Geo: 55.7107, 12.5662Because we are staying in an area called Osterbro, our days begin with a 30 - 45 minute walk into town. Most of the day is spent walking and seeing the sights. We did have a bit of relief today by taking the Canal Tour. The weather is cooler and just as we were returning home we had some rain but it has cleared since. The Trinitatis Church is known for its round tower. Inside is a ramp which goes several stories reaching a few stairs and then a winding staircase to get to the top. Our next stop by chance was the City Hall which is a very impressive building. We had been walking through the older streets and came across the square where there was some sort of technical display happening. We ... read more

Geo: 55.7107, 12.5661The wind is still blowing in Malmo. Apparently the amount of wind is unusual. The receptionist at the hotel said usually the weather is just grey. Fairly easy to get out of Malmo. The trip to Copenhagen is quite short (approx. 1 hour). There is a bridge and 4K tunnel between Malmo and Copenhagen. We got the key from our host at his place of work and then went to the apartment which we found with some difficulty. It is on the top (fifth floor) - no elevator. Pleasant view from both directions of the apartment. Once settled in we walked into Copenhagen (45 - 60 minutes). Copenhagen seems much busier and you are more likely to be run over by a bicycle than a car. Today we just oriented ourselves to the city ... read more

Geo: 55.6101, 12.9799It seems the wind always blows in Malmo. It must be miserable in the winter when there is snow and rain as well. The weather was cooler today and there were a few heavy showers while we were in the museum. The city is a port city and one can see freighters very close to the city centre. Lots of beautiful buildings in the old part of the city. One notable feature is St. Peter's Church which is dark and dingy from the outside but very light and airy inside.Preparations are underway for Malmo day. Several performance stages were being erected. The city has lots of parks and waterways. Our next stop was the castle which is also the site of of the Natural History Museum. Several displays dealt with environmental change and how people ... read more

Geo: 55.6101, 12.98We left Jonkoping and headed south to Brunamala which is the birth home of my grandmother (Nana). It is a very small village of perhaps 12 houses. One of the relatives was able to give more specific directions to what is believed to be the birth house of my grandfather (Oscar). It is the yellow one in Haljanas.Langasjo is another village close by with the church used by the people in the 2 previous communities. Some of the headstones have the Franzen name (different spelling). Unfortunately the church was not open.Close to the hotel is a grocery store with a unique way of shopping. You pick up a scanner, scan your items as you shop and then use your credit card to pay as you leave. On to Malmo. There is a lot of road ... read more
