Puerto Montt is an important port city in the south of Chile. Although I didn´t take many photos here, I did catch the sun setting on Volcano Villarica. Puerto Montt is the hub for the exportation of the south of Chile´s contraversial salmon farming industry. Below is a discussion of the salmon farming industry by our neighbors from British Columbia. If you bought a salmon fillet in the supermarket recently or ordered one in a restaurant, chances are it was born in a plastic tray in Port McNeill or a place just like it. Instead of streaking through the ocean or leaping up rocky streams, it spent three years like a marine couch potato, circling lazily in pens, fattening up on pellets of salmon chow.
