Wanderlust or Bust

Wanderlust or Bust

Indie first ventured beyond Europe in 1986 on an inter-rail ticket that took him from Morocco to Turkey: a trip that resulted in him seeing more train stations than anything else yet one that still managed to spark enough wanderlust to stop the next few decades from going stale. He's since travelled through Asia, Africa & Latin America. When not tangled up in Tibetan prayer flags or other local colour, he can be found in Wimbledon nursing his muse or penning his next best seller.

Hi all, My last blog saw us waiting to flag down a coach to Cebu City from Oslob. Well, this soon happened and after about 5 hours we were back and a short taxi ride took us the 'Beds and Friends' hotel close by the airport with free transfer bus for our early check-in tomorrow morning. We were a bit anxious about this place largely becaise of its name. Was it a euphemism for a knocking shop? Would we enter our room to find a 'friend' tucked up in bed waiting for us? Well, we needn't have worried. In fact it was one of the best places we stayed at in terms of being clean, modern and functional with rooftop pool to boot. There was even a friendly stray cat which had 3 tiny kitties hidden ... read more

We returned to Manila from San Fernando on a surprisingly quick and easy bus . Bizarrely, it was quicker than the taxi we took on the outbound journey and ridicuolously cheap too. On arrival, we transfered to our Airbnb apartment next to Terminal 3 and settled in to watch Netflix and grab an early night before our flight to Cebu the following day. When the following day came, everything went like clockwork and we landed at 10.30am. Having been stung once by an expensive taxi, we were determined this time to cross the island by bus and it couldn't have been easier although i made the mistake of choosing the back seat which magnified every bump and pothole that we came across on this 4 hour journey. Moalboal was our destination and we arrived outside a ... read more

We arrived in San Fernando after leaving Port Barton in Palawan via a joiners van trip then a domestic flight & a horrendously expensive airport taxi from Manila (yeah, I know - we should have tried the coach station but it was getting late on Maundy Thursday and we had to get there at reasonable hour in order to settle in and find somewhere decent to eat) The next day, on Good Friday itself, we discovered that much had changed since the other blogs about these crucifixions had been written. There is no free VIP ticket anymore. These tickets are now $100 each and had sold out 2 weeks ago. We were thus denied access to the VIP tent & faced a 3-4 hour wait with the locals under the burning sun for the ceremony to ... read more

3 glorious days already on Cacnipa and a 4th one approaching. It all sounded perfect so where did it all go wrong? Tbh, this potential 4th day was always a high risk proposition as we needed to be at Puerto Princesa airport by 1.30pm on day 5 which meant crossing the sea back to Port Barton in the morning of the flight (what if the sea conditions proved too rough?). Then once back at PB we needed to get a shared minivan & they only leave when full and only at set times. We would be extremely lucky to get to PB in time for the 8am minivan so that meant we'd take the 10am and the minivan timetable says to allow 3-4 hours even though the outbound journey only took just over 2 hours. Anyway, ... read more

Happy Easter from the Philippines everyone! After having a hospital operation postponed for the 2nd time, I decided there was no point sitting at home worrying so instead I managed to squeeze in a quick backpacking trip to the Philippines and what a chilled place to be - a million miles away from the worry. However, visiting the Philippines in Holy Week is a bit like going to Wembley on Cup Final day so it was a top priority to try and escape the crowds and discover the tropical seclusion expected from island hopping. It would also help me recharge my batteries for the potentially dark days ahead. The resultant journey was lengthy to say the least - not helped at all by Cathay Pacific texting me on the day of our outbound flight from London ... read more
