Hello from DC Hi Stuart:
Sounds like your stay is mixed with air unbreathable; and roads risky, yet, the social/intellectual connections continue. Be safe and lots of love
Chin music Is "Chin music" a new Chinese art form or have they lured Bob Gibson over there to keep you white "round eyes" in line? Interesting reading as always. Let's Skype sometime soon.
Wow. Wow, what a helpful analysis. What great detail with your usual bringing together of ironies. I wish more people could read it - in this US atmosphere of " we love to hate the china". It seems like you could publish this - the Nation even if it is the choir, other places? I look forward to the next installment.
beauty Walt Whitman found industrialization beautiful, and remember Carl Sandburg about Chicago: "Hog butcher to the world..." you don't see the down side until a generation or two later?
hello and an address change Hi Stuart and Ellen!
We so enjoy your blogs and have great images of you at weddings, fixing bikes, and making your astute observations on culture, politics, and life in China! Here life in VT is pretty much the same. I'm preparing to teach my spring semester photography class at UMass, mostly online, and it's quite a process. Hey, when you get a chance to amend your address book for sending these wonderful blogs, please change my address to my "permanent" address (really, how much is anything permanent these days?!) which is: annie@AnnieCameronPhotography.com as the one you're using will go dead some day. Thanks much, and travel safely. Warmly, Annie T
Great to hear that you both arrived safely, and are already in the swing of things. The Chinese reaction to the peace prize and the refusal to let diplomats visit Liu Xiaobo or his wife got a lot of press here in Sweden, as you can imagine. Take care!
Ann
I love it. Thanks for the great pictures and commentary. "They" say shumlin is ahead. tomorrow we will see. my best to ellen. i remmber an ingenious landry drier in Cuba that i much admired also. Jean
Your fabulous blogs are some compensation for losing your and Ellen's company for a few months. I miss, miss, miss you but loved reading about the wedding.
great blog are you going to put these blogs in a book? greg (my son) edits a jewish magazine in philly. he may be interested in publishing some of them. would you like me to ask him?
Wonderful commentary Hi Stuart, I love your blogs. They really bring the experience to life, filled with the nitty gritty of day to day life, mixed with social/political/historical commentary. Very illuminating and very enjoyable.
Love, Paul
scallion pancakes Yum, we had the best in a small village outside beijing which david tried to duplicate here but they just werent quite the same.
Boy, the contradictions, the good and the bad, of "progress". Jean
Hello to Ellen
Hi Stuart and Ellen wow, fascinating! I so much like the detail and the political take both in regards to China and us reaction to. we are fine and have been spending a lot of time in San Francisco with our new 8 month old grandson! I look forward to the next entry and hope to see you this summer, Jean
I FELT like I was in One of Your Classes! Once again Stuart, I was entranced with your blog. I learn so much about the places you spend time in but, also about who you are and...I think that's a pretty cool guy! Actually, I have forwarded your blogs to my friends the Friedman's in Warren. Kathy and Ken. Ken has his PHD in anthropology and travels the world as you do...he is hoping to meet you and Ellen when you return..FriedmanvsFriedman!!! Smile
Best regards,
Suzee
thanks Stuart: Great to finally read your entry-- I'll pass it on to Bernie if you don't mind. Fascinating stuff and love the photos. Best to you and Ellen- Philip
your view is so much more in depth and scholarly than mine. I was appalled at how far behind the united states is in terms of infrastructure and growth. sorry we couldn't get to meet up. it was a fabulous trip, a week in beijing, then shanghai, hong kong, taipei and on to more of asia. how long will you be there? it is great work you are doing. love, freddi
Scoff worth Dear Stuart,
No one scoffs and offers the contrasts and critiques quite as artfully as you do. It's a gift. Glad to receive it, and you. Love to you both.
UNBELIEVABLE! Thanks Stuart for this wonderfu, interesting blog. I came into my office and started my day with news from you and Ellen. What a treat. You speak about a country I know so little about regarding the present, but have read and am fasinated about it's past! Wish I could be a mouse in your pocket!!! We miss you here and many clients ask about you as well. We have hired 2 new Licenced Counselors ...both coming from CVSA. I wish I could remember their last names...James is not good about giving the complete story. I do know the full time person is Evelyn...40 something and the part time person is Liz...maybe our age....more to come about that...smile. They will be starting in April. For now Jody is here on Fridays and in SB the rest of the time. During the changeover, we have Dave Porter back...god help me!!! We also have a wonderful intern until the end of this month. Always...room for you when you return .....!!!
I have a patient,
Be safe and thanks for keeping in touch!

berries etc. So good to get your news. And finally, having been To China myself,I have a framework in which to place your wonderful word and photographic images. Yes, I saw those displays of strawberries too, and no, I wasn't tempted to eat any!
Thank You Stu! So good to be reading your blogs again! I was just thinking about you the other day: "I wonder what Stu is up to these days?" Now I know. I find your perceptive commentaries on China always very enlightening. One of the unforseen fallouts from the digital revolution is the collapse of the fourth estate and in-depth investigative journalism, so one has to be lucky or dig around for information on what's happening in the world beyond who Beyonce is dating or who's winning or losing in the US political wars. We just got back from a trip to New Zealand which was amazing--part of what I came away with is how little we in this country know or seem to care about what is going on in the rest of the world. Keep it up, and thanks! Don Rhoades
What th'! How fitting that your t-shirt should come back around to you - only a measure of your magnetism on the world stage. This really is a book in the making. It will be good to have you back in hug-time.Perhaps dead bird can be arranged.
Love, Pat
" The Shirt" Stuart,
What a lucky find! It must be a sign for you to run again. It would be a great story for my students to write about the travels of the 1992 Friedman Campaign shirt to China!
We are back in Guangzhou at Sun Yat-sen University as participants in and witnesses to the amazing spectacle of China in the 21st Century!!... full info
