never boring thanks for keeping us posted on what you are doing. your frustration there is one you can leave. here it just surrounds us. obama is set up for a fall. only if he is really the messiah can he meet the expectations the voters demand of him. where do we go if china calls in her loans?
Terrific as Usual Stu, I find your blog really fascinating especially as national and world events unfold. You are really eyes and ears for the flavor and facts on the ground that we would never get otherwise. So thanks for taking the time and doing this.
I was ambivalent about bailing out Detroit before I read what you wrote, thinking that with the new administration there could be strings attached regarding making and marketing green automobiles in this country, but you've swayed me in the other direction. This issue, like others, seems to put the left and right on the same side with the middle on the other. For example, Richard Selby the Alabama Senator is completely opposed. Bernie is too, from what I gather. Anyway, I'm glad it cooled down to seventy degrees for you, poor guy. Here in Vermont it may break 30 today if we're lucky. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Ellen! Don
we voted for you two! Love your students' quotes above - very telling. Wondering if the fact that these students generally are assigned a "second-rate" major affects their willingness to achieve on a high level? Hope you and Ellen win your elections. Glad to have election day over later today, and hopefully with GREAT results.
Comparison Yet, there are some serious trade offs that have been made to obtain this growth. Political expression has been cut off, the government is rigidly intolerant of even the most tepid challenges to its rule, and people know that they cannot trust the government to tell the truth about important matters. This past week Ellen and I were introducing the concepts of program evaluation in our Social Administration class. I made the point that an important use of program evaluation is to review activities or outcomes that you suspect you are not performing well so as to develop an organized approach to improving things.
Stuart this paragraph sounds to me like our current U.S. government. I certainly cannot trust them. HMMM wonder if we could use a class on Social Administration in the U.S. political arena?
I am so pleased that the two of you are still making progress and enjoying learning new things every day. Thank you for the vivid descriptions they make the vision of your adventure clear in my head as if I were next to you. It is so nice to have this blog to help me see the other side of the world.
thanks Thanks for the updates Stuart - I really enjoy reading them. How interesting about the factory owners - how did they end up meeting with you? I will be curious to hear more about the experience and how it goes.
Also, we're getting stories here about a real slowdown in the Chinese economy, alongside the rest of the world. I will be curious to hear what you see on your end.
Stephanie
Thanks Stuart: I so enjoy reading your missives from China-- thanks. Love to you both. Tremendous anxiety in US RE economy-- cautious optimism for an Obama victory.
Stuart the gentleman Hi Stuart,
great talking with the two of you yesterday. Your blog was really interesting. You have always been a very civilized friend and I love that you are bringing your sensitivity to China.
Love diane
Settling in You two sound like you are settling in and getting down to work. We are doing well. Charlie continues to deal with his parents which is mostly challenging. I leave for St. Lucia on Thursday and have arranged for a workshop at a high school on hope and separating the problem from the student. This school is filled with discouraged staff and faculty since there is no special ed. in St. Lucia and this school is filled with children who test poorly.
Big hugs to Eli, you and Ellen
ASIST Training Regarding teaching suicide prevention, the ASSIST training is a very good one because it does not require trainees to be knowledgeable in mental health.

Oh yes. I continue to be delighted by the sights, sounds, tastes, and socio-cultural commentary. One day a Joy room, another day: reconfiguring unions, consulting about autism, and showing the inside of a salon.
Lovely.
moving words Stuart--
Your updates are so moving to me. You give the personal side to what we hear on the news, totally depersonalized. The pictures make the world of China real to me, here in Vermont.
On another note, I heard a guy, didn't get his name, who was in your neck of the Chinese woods, who wrote an article about industrialization for The Atlantic this month. Sounded similar to all that you are saying.
Take care, and thank you for the updates.
Marrisa
WOW Your experiences and your descriptions of your experiences are ever so interesting. Thank you and keep in the musings. Hi to you all and love and kisses.
Coming to China - hope to see you Hi Stuart and Ellen,
Thanks for the update. I emailed you recently to let you know we will be in China for 3 weeks starting mid-October. Can you please contact us by email and we'll see if we can meet up.
thanks,
Gregg Krech

Reception Hi Stuart and Ellen,
The blog is a great way to keep a journal of the events that take place. I hope the next blog will have photos of the Governmental Reception. I can imaging the attire! What fun and what an honor.

Oy Way! Dear Stuart and E,
I'm there - the guffaws, the intractible and cheerful teaching challenges, the grateful students, the sweet apartment, the readjustment to traffic monitors and good good food.
Thank you for taking me with you.
Love,
Pat
Enjoying your blog I've been checking in from time to time (thanks for the reminder, Ellen!). It's always very interesting to read what you've all been up to!
Hello Hi Ellen and Stuart,
This blog is great and breings life in China a bit closer to Vermont. I Cnaq't even imagine how terrifying it must be attempting to cross the streets. YIKES!
Best,
Rose
love the blogs!!! It is so great to keep connected to your experiences this way. I love the wonder and twinkle I can hear in your "voice". The road is muddy, the sap is flowing and Spring is on the way here. Give lots of love to Ellen.
Where can I find out more My sister sent your blog to me -- I would love to read earlier versions (I am looking at May 23) but do not know how to find them. Also am interested in learning of ways to live in China and teach English while studying tai chi chuan. Do you have any ideas? Your page has the most interesting information and photos of any of those I've seen tonight! Thank you.
Amazing I am so pleased to hhave seen this blog. Thanks to Erica! Stuart what a wonderful journal to share with others. I am so amzed at everything you 2 have already done.
Rose
Thanks, Stu! Thank you so much for keeping me updated. I have three sisters, plus nieces and nephews, plus my own two daughters and their families who are also fascinated by your adventure and who get everything you send forwarded to them. What a wonderful opportunity you have created for yourselves! Question: Who is the person referred to as your "Master?" Is this a spiritual master or an administrative supervisor? Thanks again and keep sending the updates. Don
