Set off from Franz Josef about 08.30 - and made our first stop within 5 mins at Lake Mapourika. Just another lake surrounded by trees! Moved on to Okaritio and wandered along the beach - some interesting rocks jutting out of the Tasman Sea. Didn't even take a pic at our next stop,Lake Ianthe.......just another lake (Francis said I was getting blase). Lake Mahinapua was more interesting (originally a coastal lagoon but now cut off from the sea) and we saw a weka (I was getting excited 'cos the weka looks a bit like a kiwi.......).Stopped off for brunch in Hokitika - quaint little place, made rich in the past from goldmining. Then on to Lake Kaniere - Rae reckons that's where the print we have in a bedroom at home was taken..........could well have been: a ... read more

Well,we did the half day glacier trek. Not as physically testing as Tongariro - and well worth the effort. Mind you, making it to the bus was a challenge - apparently there was some sort of incident yesterday (there was a rumour that someone had had a heart attack)! We had to fill out these forms and those forms, take off our own boots and socks and replace them with theirs (our coats managed to pass inspection),get issued with crampons. It was worse than the IBM employee induction process!!!! Having arrived for the 08.30 bus,it eventually left about 09.15! We walked through some bush to get to the river bed at the bottom of the glacier which was 2 kilometres away. The weather was cloudy but dry and fairly warm. En route the sun did come through a ... read more

Had a good run up to Franz Josef via Lake Wanaka. Left sharpish and were at Lake Wanaka (via Kawarau Gorge) before 10. Lovely day - again! Bumped into a couple from Gouraock that we'd met in Dunedin - they gave us a recommendation for breakfast. Fabulous views over the lake. Stopped off at Lake Hawea (impressive),Thunder Creek Falls (less impressive 'cos of lack of rain),Roaring Billy (ditto the comment for Thunder Creek) before popping into Haast for a toilet break - where Rae bought a Merino gilet............no,not in the toilet! Had lunch at Knights Point overlooking the ocean - wonderful blue water! Went to Lake Mathieson near Fox Glacier but, disppointingly, the mirror effect was spoiled by the wind rippling the water.Still............ Accommodation very good again - a very well-equipped self-catering chalet. Off to the Franz ... read more

Relatively easy day today........caught the hotel shuttle bus into Queenstown and climbed Queenstown Hill - only 907 metres but (much of it) steeply uphill, surprise, surprise. Took us just under the hour to reach the top where we breakfasted on a pancake stack with bacon, bananas and maple syrup. Stunning views - and they do everything from there: paragliding, bunay jumping, luge, mountain biking (even mini-golf). Took the gondola back down. This afternoon we did the Skippers Canyon Jet boats - exhilirating, almost as scary as the drive to get there. Our guide was a real comedian named Craig, saying such things as "If you hear my door opening - as he opened his door going round a tight bend with a sheer drop on one side - it's time to get out!". Again spectacular scenery - even saw Ben Lomond! Jet boat ride ... read more

Made it to Queenstown about 4'ish. Decided to do the drive up to Milford Sound (Piopiotahi in Maori) - well worth it. Stunning, spectacular, awesome views!!! Left early (just after 8!) to avoid the bus trips and didn't stop too often on way up - once at The Chasm which was amazing - the water coming down off the mountain has over time carved its way through huge rocks resulting in unbelievable formations. Rae thought one of them looked like Munsch's "Scream"........Went straight into Homer Tunnel - pretty claustrophobic. Got to Milford in about 2 hours, took a few pics and headed back to Te Anau, stopping off at a few more viewing points. Mirror Lakes was particularly good. Went into a bird sanctuary at Te Anau and saw a few specimens including the endangered Tekapo. The drive up to ... read more

Headed off on the Doubtful Sound trip: bus, boat, bus, boat there and back. Never been on so many boats! Hit our first major snag - went to take a photo of the boat and discovered the camera was missing! Cue: panic. Couldn't find it anywhere. Rae saved the day to a certain extent by buying a disposable one (that they sold on board). But it means there won't be any pics of Doubtful Sound for you to see. The story ended well insofar as the bus driver who had taken us on the first leg found it down the side of my seat - doh!! We got it back on our return to Lake Manapouri wharf. Apparently we saw Fiordland and Doubtful Sound as it should be seen: cloudy, misty, rainy. This'll sound terrible but..............overall I was underwhelmed. It was ... read more

Took a couple of pics of Dunedin before leaving this morning. Had a good run to Te Anau, stopping off at Gore for breakfast and at a scenic reserve just outside of Gore called Dolamore Park where we did an hour's bush walk to a viewpoint 300 or so metres up. Bit boring actually after some of the other panoramas we've had EXCEPT for being accosted by a couple of fantails (little birds,a bit like sparrows but with an amazing fan tail - must be the same length as the body). They fluttered around us on the path coming within 2 or 3 feet. I could become a twitcher! Then on to our digs in Te Anau...............an old convent that had been moved (literally) from its location 60 or so miles away. Looks fantastic - Trailfinders have ... read more

Thursday - just so Iknow! Getting my hotel room numbers mixed up - it's either the wine or the number of hotels or dementia - tick the appropriate box. Interesting day................bit of a mix up with our trip booking: Monarch thought we were doing a morning trip and we thought it was a full day one. All worked out in our favor as we we got a free Larnach Castle visit - wouldn't have chosen to go on it but we really enjoyed it. Even had a piper there (Glen) to welcome the visitors (off the cruise ships) - he was pretty good given that he is about 5 generations removed from being Scottish! The guide was excellent, giving us all the scandal about the Larnach family. Then the trip we expected to go on started: ... read more

Left Mt Cook and stopped off in a few places en route to Dunedin (the so-called Edinburgh of the south): Twisel,Elephant Rocks,(Hampden - just for the toilet and the name),Moeraki Boulders. Weather still excellent. The stop at the Elephant Rocks was a deviation from the planned route: it sounded interesting and was! They are large weathered limestone rocks shaped like........you've guessed it,elephants (if you use a little bit of imagination). Then on to the Moeraki Boulders. One of Rae's friends,Leigh, had told us about these: very strange looking rocks formed by "septarian concretion" - thought that you'd want to know that! Comes about from erosion! We had lunch on the beach while studying them! And on down to Dunedin with Scottish Shop,Robert Burns Bar - we even walked down Princes St. Off on a wildlife drive/cruise round ... read more

After a nice (but early - clock in the bedroom was half an hour fast!!!) breakfast,we set off to do the Hooker Valley Walk. Took us 3.5 hours in total with several stops for photos, visit to Freda's Rock, the Alpine Memorial, elevenses! Some easy walking, some hard walking,2 swing bridges (I thought they'd be like the Tower of London - wrong; a lot more bouncy than that (yes that sort of swing!!). Rewarded at the destination with our first sight of a glacial lake with, like, icebergs floating in it (well small icebergs!) at the foot of the Hooker Glacier. Another (shorter) walk this afternoon, probably the Tasman Glacier one. Yes,did that - only 1.5 hours but some rough bits.. And it is very warm (about 22c) - we really have been blessed with good weather: Francis came here and didn't see ... read more
