One pic from Christchurch that I couldn't add last night attached. Had a very good run down from Christchurch via Amberley and Fairlie. Great sightseeing weather again. Stopped off at Mt John (1000m up - good road!) for spectacular views over Lake Tekapo towards Mt Cook; then again at the Mt Cook Scenic Lookout at the bottom of Lake Pukak. Views are truly "awesome". Accommodation here is at The Hermitage Hotel in a chalet - excellent. Did the shortish Governor's Bush Walk (60 mins) and the Bowen (same governor!) Bush trail - only 15 mins. Ate in the backpackers grill bar - and didn't feel out of place. Ceratainly weren't the oldest ones in there! Then we did our stargazing bit: started off in the Planetarium in the hotel and then moved out to the airfield ... read more

Hi,folks. At Mount Cook now - amazing, But more about that later! First yesterday's blog. Travelled from Blenheim to Christchurch. Some incredible scenery but Christchurch was very sad and depressing: virtually the whole of the city centre is still inaccessible. Only took one photo out of sympathy for the Christchurchians (and not of a broken building)! Went to mass in St. Mary's in Blenheim - great "country" choir. Saw penguins and seals on the way dow. Great weather,if a bit windy. Accommodation in Christchurch was the worst yet - not terrible but very "motellish". As I said already, walking into the city centre was a nightmare: roads blocked off, buildings destroyed/damaged. In the end we found our way to North Hagley Park which contained the Botanic Gardens - still a great sight! Mt. Cook got us back on ... read more

Lovely day when we left Wellington. Ferry was delayed by an hour 'cos of the wind! But crossing was fineaznd there was some lovely scenery as we sailed across the Cook Strait into Tory Sound then into Queen Charlotte Sound before arriving in Picton. Still,a 3 hour crossing! Only a half hour's run to St. Leonards Vineyard Cottages (Blenheim) where we are staying. Didn't arive till after 3,so it was too late to embark on a vineyard tour (everybody "aaaawwwwww!). So we went to the pool and took some sun for a couple of hours. Paul's (the owner) mother lives with his sister in Framlingham and his brother-in-law used to run Atco in Stowmarket! Lovely setting, among vineyards with mountains rising on both sides................and sheep, hens and deer on-site! We're in the "Old Dairy" - a ground level ... read more

Hi,me again. Didn't make it quite to Mt Victoria lookout - Tongariro must have taken its toll! Still extremely windy but ..........sunny. Should be an interesting crossing tomorrow. Looks form here as if the South Island is getting the brunt of the weather! Also visited the Te Papa national musueum - very impressive! Even had an earthquake simulator. As ever with these things,it was a case of information overload.............adding significantly to the list of things that I've learned and forgotten during this holiday! Next blog will be from the South Island..................if I'm sober enough after the anticpated wine tasting in Blenheim tomorrow afternoon!... read more

Friday - 13th! Had a good run down from Whakapapa yesterday, passing the other side of Mt Ruapehu, and stopping off briefly at Vinegar Hill on the Rangitikei River and Stormy Point Lookout (neither of which were much to write home about - getting a bit blase with all the wonderful scenery! Finding the Travelodge was a challenge - but when we found it,we were impressed! Not like the UK ones - our room is on the (top) 22nd floor, with great views and smack in the middle of the city. Today we've been on the cable car (more like a funicular railway) to the Botanic Gardens; then we walked down via the Parliament buildings (inc. the Beehive,Francis). Off to Mt Victoria lookout this afternoon. (We were expecting lousy weather but it's be fine,if a tad (????) windy. More ... read more

Hi,folks. Just a brief one tonight with lots of photos to follow. Did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing today: 19.4 km (12+ miles),up from 1100m to 1900m and down to 700m! Took almost 8 hours. Fabulous weather, fabulous views - Lord of the Rings country. Cream-crackered at the end but worth every minute! Went round with a very knowledgeable (and pretty) Kiwi guide,Catherine and a couple of Germans,a Yank and a couple of Spanish ladies who dropped out - they were older than us!! Will attach a couple of photos to this entty and more tomorrow.... read more

Thought that I'd done this already............but it seems to be gorn! Easier day today before Tongariro tomorrow. Rae had a bright idea to go to another thermal park. So we drove to Orakei Korako (the Hidden Valley) and took a ferry over the Waitako river. It was a great visit - much better than the Craters of the Moon: silica terraces, mud pools,mini-geysers. My photos don't do it justice. Then off for lunch at the side of the lake in Taupo - more like a sea! Short drive which should have been scenic - but it rained most of the way. Arrived here at 4 and it's been throwing it down since. But the forecast's better for tomorrow, thank goodness.... read more
