St EMILION - 7th May 2007 (Monday 22º Partly Cloudy) Catherine Ouzoulias is not only a great homemaker and interior decorator; she is also a great cook. Cooking aromas entice us downstairs from our room. We arrive to be seated at a lovely table for two, which is made up with antique linen tableware and crockery. The smells that drew us were the homemade apple pies, freshly baked baguettes and ginger breads. These are competing for attention with the muesli, as well as 8 different varieties of chutneys, jams, relishes and freshly brewed café au lait. After breakfast we drive to nearby Lebourne to get some digital pictures copied from SD card to CD. The guy in the Kodak shop talks about Australia and in particular the recent drug use allegations against Ian Thorpe. Of course ... read more

LA ROCHELLE to St EMILION - 6th May 2007 (Sunday 24º) We have been blessed with the weather. It is another cracking day in the South East of France and what does one do when the weather is good? Well one does one’s washing, doesn’t one! I spend 20 minutes in the Laundrette next door to the Hotel working out how to operate the soap powder dispenser and finally extract enough powder to make some bubbles. Throw the clothes into a washing machine the size of a Cement Truck and leave Deb in charge as I go to extract the car from the underground car park. It is a peaceful walk through Town, after all it is Sunday, and even the French must rest. I am fearful that the FFF (Ford Focus Ferrari) may be jacked ... read more

LA ROCHELLE - 5th May 2007 (Saturday 25º) Wake up at 8:45am. Heavy drapes, earplugs and red wine last night ensure we sleep in - the day is half gone! We wander down to the breakfast area where we are served by a lovely little French woman who is a busy as a blue arsed fly. The room is so quiet that the normal clinking and clanking of cutlery makes you wince and noises that would normally be absorbed (e.g. conversation) bounce around the glass and tile enclosure. Stirring your coffee can be compared in relative decibels to those generated by a Boeing Jet Engine. Two women at an adjoining table are whispering surreptitiously. I suspect they are planning the election of a French woman as President - but after finetuning my eavesdropping I realise they ... read more

TOURS to LA ROCHELLE - 4th May 2007 (Friday 20º Sunny in Tours and Sunny and 27º in La Rochelle) Arrive late for breakfast and it is a terrible mistake. There had been a tour bus or two staying in the Hotel overnight and they had hit the breakfast room before we did. The devastation is locust like and complete. There were empty little butter containers strewn hither and tither. The coffee pot was empty and the croissant basket was bare. Seats had been pushed back as though someone had yelled 'abandon ship' whereas I guess it was probably just the bus driver who had said “nous allons” (we go). Pay up at the Best Western and fire up the Ford Focus Ferrari. Deb guides us unerringly through Chatellerault, Poiters, Noitre and into La Rochelle. It ... read more

TOURS - 3rd May 2007 (Thursday 26º Sunny) Up and at em - for today we go to Chenonceau! But first we seek out somewhere for brekky for I am not inclined to provide the Hotel Turone with one more cent of my hard earned. We find small local café where they dish up two wonderful 3-egg omelettes with the type of aromatic coffee that smells good enough to drag tea drinkers in off the street. We navigate our way 17 kilometres out of town to visit one of the many chateau that are sprinkled liberally throughout the Loire Valley. We arrive and after buying our tickets we walk a half kilometre along the driveway. It is easy to imagine elaborate horse drawn carriages (having made the trip from Paris in a week - it took ... read more

PARIS to TOURS - 2nd May 2007 (Tuesday 25º Sunny) Last day in Paris. We walk along Ave de Gobelins to Place d’Italie and find the Hertz Rental Car Office. We have booked a car in order to drive all over France in any direction we wish for the next three weeks. I am not sure how the rental clerk confused Red Ferrari with Silver Blue Ford Focus, but the latter is what we got. We spent some time familiarising ourselves with the controls, but even so, I spent the next three weeks turning on the wipers every time I needed to use the indicators. Apart from the steering wheel being on the wrong side I also have to deal with changing gears with my right hand as this is a 5-speed manual gearbox. So as ... read more

PARIS - 1st May 2007 (Tuesday 24º Sunny) It’s May Day and a Public holiday in France. Many shops are closed and even the Buskers and Beggars are having the day off. We walk past a building where a chap has been hanging out every day and he is not there - but you can see where he has been! This morning we jump the Metro at Les Gobelins and head towards the vicinity of the Louvre. The intention is to walk the Champs Elysee from La Louvre to the Arc de Triomphe. It is one of those walks that YOU MUST DO in Paris - the goal is always in sight and at various stages along the Champs I play chicken in the traffic to get the best photo. We make good time and walk ... read more

PARIS - 30th April 2007 (Monday 28º Sunny) Another cracker of a day. Sun is shining and we hit the streets. In my never-ending search for the real Paris (or as Deb suggests in my never ending search for cheap rip offs) we head out for another Marche aux Puces. This one is situated at one of the old gates to the City (Port Saint Ouen) and the nearest Metro is Clignancourt. It is a short walk from the station to the Marche (Market) and we pass heaps of Nigerian Chaps surreptitiously selling Dolce and Gabbana Belts and Bags. They approach you with downcast eyes and I almost expect them to open their overcoats and say……”psssst, wanna buy a watch?” The Market is a mixture of permanent fixed (or covered) stalls surrounded by an organised rabble ... read more

PARIS - 29th April 2007 (Sunday 28º Sunny) What a fantastic day! What does any warm blooded Frenchman do on a fine spring Sunday? Rumour has it he would take a bottle (or two) of Moet & Chandon Champagne to the Park and get sloshed. When in Rome (or Paris) one should do as the Romans do……… Armed with a makeshift esky (which comprised a garbage bag full of ice inside a backpack) we pinched two glasses from the Hotel and headed to Le Jardin du Luxembourg. We found a nice spot in the sun with a reasonable view and set up camp. Me to paint, and Deb to drink & look good and expound on the virtues of French Champagne. After a few friendly comments from locals we realised that perhaps the strawberries, aged goats ... read more

PARIS - 28th April 2007 (Saturday 25º Sunny) Did I mention that this April in Paris has been the hottest ever recorded (in 375 years of keeping records)? Yes, instead of the temperature being 13 or 15 degrees it has been 25 to 28 everyday for a month - we have been blessed with the weather once again. Today we avoid Madam Lash at Breakfast and skip out into the beautiful Paris sunshine. We walk to Place d’Italie and jump on the Metro to Bir-Hakeim. This Metro station is a short walk to the Eiffel Tower. Yes, today we are being tourists. On the walk we stop and watch some boys playing soccer on a vacant lot. It is a strange feeling watching the boys play as my eyes are continuously drawn to Monsieur Eiffel’s Monument ... read more
