Public Holiday - Everyone has the day off!
No busker here but you can see where he has been. PARIS - 1st May 2007 (Tuesday 24º Sunny)
It’s May Day and a Public holiday in France.
Many shops are closed and even the Buskers and Beggars are having the day off. We walk past a building where a chap has been hanging out every day and he is not there - but you can see where he has been!
This morning we jump the Metro at Les Gobelins and head towards the vicinity of the Louvre. The intention is to walk the Champs Elysee from La Louvre to the Arc de Triomphe. It is one of those walks that YOU MUST DO in Paris - the goal is always in sight and at various stages along the Champs I play chicken in the traffic to get the best photo.
We make good time and walk to the quiet side of the Arc where we take a perch and watch the traffic on the world’s largest round-a-bout. There is some sort of ordered chaos going on that is not evident to the casual observer and everyone gets in an out of the loop with little fanfare.
We sit next to a German chap who is very
keen to tell us about his bike. It is German like him and he is very proud of it. I don’t mention the war.
Into the Metro and head off to see if we can find Rodin’s Museum. We do (find it) but it is closed. It may have been open when we set out from Arch de Triomphe but seeing as we made a bad decision at one particular Metro interchange it has taken us sometime to get here. I blame a German Family (what is it with us and the Germans)? You see Helmut, Helga, Horst and Hildegard had built a formidable human barrier around the Metro Trip Finder and even though they had finished with it there was no way that anyone else was going to use it whilst they had their way. Thus we got lost and Rodin’s Museum closed.
We stumbled upon a wonderful area around the Place de L’Ecole Militare and stop for Coffee and Hot Gooey Chocolate Pudding a La Terrace Du (we are in the 7eme Arridisoment).
Make our way back to Hotel La Demeure and powder our noses (Deb tells me no Nana naps! As I eye the
Playing Chicken in the Traffic
I was nearly run over three times as I took this photo. The troubling thing was that it was the same driver each time! bed longingly). Since arriving in Paris we have eaten Italian, Moroccan, Scottish (McDonalds), Irish (Margen’s Pub) and even some French food so we rack our brains as to where we can take our taste buds tonight. As if on cue La Crete (Greek) Restaurant looms out of the neon barrage of rue Mouffetard. We are in like Flynn.
The Greek Salad is “polee kalo” and the Moussaka to die for! This is chased by Peach Melba (go figure) and good coffee. The most wonderful part of the evening? Listening to the Waiters speaking Greek with French accents.
Home to bed for our last night in Paris.
