Hello! I am Giovanni Bruno, a merchant from the city of Amalfi. I’m 34 years old and I’ve been a merchant now for 10 years. I grew up in a poor family in Venice and moved to Amalfi when I was little. Since then, I was raised to be a merchant and raise my status in society. So far, I’m not very successful. I’ve taken a few trips to some other city-states. However, I’ve never travelled as far as I am with my next trip. For my next trip, I am travelling back to Venice. It’s a very long voyage, around 1200 miles. However, I am determined to make this trip the best that it can be. I’ve been planning this now for almost 2 months and I’ve gotten a crew together with a lot of goods that I’ll be selling in Venice. I’ve imported rare spices from India and purchased lots of fresh produce from local markets. I hope I can make a good profit off of these goods because they were not cheap to buy. If this trip fails for me, I may be bankrupt. However, if this goes well for me, I may be able to take trips farther around the world. The journey to Venice may be very long, but I’m sure that it will be rewarding for sure. I’m ready for this voyage, and I’m excited for my biggest adventure yet.

Amalfi to Venice

As of November 1st 2017, Venice, one of the biggest cities in the world during the late middle ages, no longer holds that title. Though Venice still is a large, and beautiful city, it is not nearly as grand as it was in the middle ages. For starters, Venice isn’t it’s own republic now. Instead, it is apart of the country of Italy. However, much of the pristine that Venice held in the Middle Ages is still present. St. Mark’s Basilica, the only cathedral in Venice for 700 years, is still standing today. Though it is no longer used as a religious structure, it is still used as a popular museum and tourist attraction for people visiting Venice today. To add onto this, the economy of Venice has shifted from trade to now tourism. In fact, a ... read more

After being in Venice now for a month, I think it is finally time to come home. I’ve sold all of my goods and I’ve certainly made a profit off of it. Being in Venice has truly changed me. I now understand how to be a merchant and how to sell me goods effectively. Since I was so successful with this trip, I think I will be able to take trips farther around the world. Perhaps I’ll be able to visit Constantinople or Baghdad. Anyhow, I have to start preparing for the trip back to Amalfi. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to return to this beautiful city of Venice.... read more

Right now, I’ve been in Venice now for a week. During that time, I sold a lot of my goods I brought from Amalfi. Surprisingly, I was able to sell all my spices. I also sold a few of my groceries too. I’m pretty amazed at how quickly I was able to sell my goods. I think I may have set the price too low. All the other merchants around me sell their goods at really high prices. Nevertheless, I’ve made a lot of good money here in Venice. I’ve also had the opportunity to speak with some other merchants. One, which is from Venice, actually had a trip sponsored by the city itself. The government gave him ships and a crew and they voyaged to Constantinople and back. Sometimes, I wish that the Amalfi government ... read more

Finally! After traveling on my vessel now for more than a month, I've finally arrived in the marvelous city of Venice. It is simply one of the greatest cities in the whole world. Everywhere around me, I see marvelous structures and architecture. In fact, I think I can see the St. Mark's Basilica from here. Anyhow, I have to start setting up my shop here in Venice. I'm selling spices, groceries, and wine that we imported in Amalfi from all around the world. There is a lot of competition here. This is one of the biggest centers for trade in all of Eurasia. It seems like everyone from around the world has come to Venice to sell their goods here. I see people from Constantinople, India, and even some from China. Venice sits on the most ... read more

I have been at sea for a week now and I just want to say that it is wonderful. I love the smell of the water all around me. I’ve been thinking for some time now about my strategies for trade in Venice. I will try to appeal to the rich in order to make more money and if that doesn’t work, then slowly make my way down to the poor men. My goal is to make as big of a profit as possible in this long trip. If I do not make a profit, then I won't be able to afford to keep on being a merchant. Nevertheless, I'm going to try my hardest to make this a successful trip. Earlier today, a crew mate of mine was telling me a story about Venice. He ... read more

After 2 months of planning this trip, I am just about ready to set sail. I've said goodbye to my wife and kids, checked inventory, and prepared my crew for the voyage ahead. My crew and I are currently shipping over some of the freshest produce in all of the land. Competition is quite hard in a city as large as Venice. So we need to stand out from the crowd to be able to sell all our good. We're also bringing over some of the rarest spices from a far away land called India. I recently purchased these spices at a hefty price from a merchant who claims that he's traveled all the way to India and back with these spices. I hope that I'll can make a profit from the spices so I can ... read more
