From HCMC we travelled for two days into the Mekong Delta, with a group and our guide 'Dong' (which is the same name as the currency before you get any funny ideas) staying one night in Can Tho. We booked the tour with Bao from Welcome Travel, but everything was pretty much the same thing wherever you went in the backpacking district. A good two days, the Mekong Delta looks pretty picturesque in the photos, but it's serious river life, the difference between this place and further north will become clear in the photos we'll upload. We passed a huge bridge that had fallen into the water, quite a scary job to have to put that lot back together. We took a ferry across the bay to Can Tho which was an experience in itself, people ... read more

Asia January 18th 2008

Arrival in Vietnam on the 3rd Jan was pretty eventful. The hotel we'd try to book with hadn't got back to us with a final confirmation so we arrived at Ho Chi Minh with no definite place to go. Hopped in a taxi after a scrum outside the airport and headed into the mayhem that is HCMC. We arrived at the hotel to find no room at the inn, but they did their damnedest to find us something else and luckily within 20 mins we were on two mopeds, with drivers and rucksacks, screeching through the HCMC streets. At that stage we weren't aware of the 33 road fatalities per day that occur in Vietnam, but my driver definitely had finger nail marks in his side for a few days after that. We were taken up ... read more

Wow! The only word to describe New Year's Eve this year. We're hoping to get some film online of the fireworks, but struggling with technical Vietnamese difficulties at the moment. More of Vietnam in the next update. After a rocky start (Qantas lost my bag-on a 1h15 min flight, remarkable!) Sydney was fantastic, great weather, great food and a great city. We caught up on some shopping, walked for miles visting the opera house, Darling Harbour and wedging ourselves onto a ferry to get back to the hotel with the other 500 tourists waiting to do the same thing. We headed out to the sticks one day to visit more of the family down under. Made it to Cambeltown and back without a hitch in time for Mum and John to have their first taste of ... read more

Well, update so far as follows: We've been eating stacks of seafood, kicking off with a plateau fruits de mer in Singapore with Mum. We made it to Raffles during our Singapore stopover and to Sentosa where Mum tasted her first 'Subway' can't imagine how she's lived without it up until now... We parted ways at Singapore airport, John and I heading to Cairns, Mum to Brisbane where we met up again for Xmas. We made it to Misson Beach Eco Village which was fantastic, a great meal at 'The Shrubbery' set us up for a day on Dunk Island, where I was attacked by a rabid branch in the middle of the rain forest there. No real harm done, nothing savlon couldn't cope with anyway. Next stop was Townsville, where we ended up having supper ... read more
