I have nothing to define myself with. I just graduated college with no idea what to do next or even what I exactly want. It's scary and vulnerable and everyday I'm trying to make new and different choices in how I think and how I spend my time. I'm learning, experiencing, and everyday trying to keep an open heart to change, pain, and joy. I can't say that I'm excited to see what my future holds, because there will be things I don't like, but I do like to be challenged... and I'm sure I'll get a lot of that.

It has been a whole new experience being in Italy in the summer rather than the fall and winter. It’s hot all the time! I’m thinking I’ll get back to Boise with a crazy tan. *Fingers crossed*. The beach is a whole experience in itself. Saturday we went to Paestum where there are ruins of a Greek colony. There are three temples still standing in great condition and it was so cool to see those and how grand they are without having to go to Greece. It was beautiful and we had lunch at a really excellent restaurant overlooking one of the temples. After that, we walked down to the beach and swam in the Mediterranean (check that off my bucket list) and laid on the white sand beach for a couple hours. Swimming in the ... read more

The work we are doing in Pompeii has been so much fun. When Katie invited me to join the team I simply assumed we would be volunteers, but in actuality, Katie and David are working to create a field school to work here in Pompeii. So while we are helping out as volunteers, the importance is really on educating us in technique and post excavation processing. We are their first group of students for this and hopefully attributing to them blazing a trail with a new field school organization. The house we are working on is the Casa delle Vestali (the House of the Vestals) and was originally one smaller house that eventually bought out many of the surrounding shops and houses and renovated into a larger house, probably owned by a wealthy family. The house ... read more

Wow. I can’t believe that I am back in Italy. The second I got into the city I was so joyful at the familiar smells, sounds, buildings, and trees that are just so uniquely Italian. Everything is familiar and I am so comfortable with being back in this culture. I’m pretty sure that my taxi driver from the airport to the campsite somewhat ripped me off. It’s happened to me before and I used to know enough Italian to point it out, but I couldn’t remember anything to try and refute the price, and frankly I didn’t even care that much because it was just so good to be back in Italian culture where people try to take advantage of you financially simply because you’re American. Plus he was really friendly and helpful so it’s basically ... read more

Europe » Spain » Basque Country June 8th 2013

The Basque Country has been treating me so well! The people have been very friendly and patient with my poor Spanish, the food has been excellent, and the land is so pretty. Kim and I started out in the town she had been living in the past few months, Bilbao, then visited Guernica for a few hours, and ended up in San Sebastian where she is living now. Bilbao was so busy! And there are children EVERYWHERE. They are all dressed so cute too, just like little mini Basques. The first thing I ate was, of course, a kebab. We used to eat them all the time in Italy and I have had some serious cravings back home. It was just as greasy and delicious as I remembered, and also made me feel just as crappy… ... read more

Europe » Germany June 4th 2013

Well I am back in Europe! I have a 6 hour layover in Germany before I head to my final stop in Bilbao. I am so excited to see my roommate from when I studied abroad, Kim. She is living in the Basque country teaching English and I’m really looking forward to seeing her life there. Travelling was weird this time around, in an unexpected way. I haven’t had any huge thrills like I’ve had in the past. This time around it’s all felt very natural and easy. My main flight from the states to Europe was about 11 hours and went by fairly quickly and somewhat comfortably… somewhat. The distance doesn’t seem so far anymore. I haven’t been overly challenged in getting here. I love the problem solving that comes with travelling, but I haven’t ... read more
