After a quick breakfast and packing our car we leave the Valley heat as fast as possible driving towards the higher altitudes near Flagstaff. We watch happily as the outside temperature falls from close to 110 F(45C) in Phoenix to 90 F (32C) as we ascend to 5500 ft (1700m). We decide to make a short break and exit at Stoneman Lake - the vegetation is still desert-like and there are no pine trees yet. However to our surprise as we stretch our legs we find some ancient Native American pottery shards - quite interesting find in a random location. Still it is warm outside especially with no shade so we move on higher into pine territory. Next exit we are safe into pine territory at around 6500 ft (2000 m) as we exit at Schnebly ... read more

For the last full day in Finland we were planning a day trip to Tallinn in Estonia reachable as a day trip by ferry from Helsinki. After waking up early and with almost no breakfast we rush to the Linda Lines terminal which is the fastest of the different ferries to Tallinn (1 1/2h one way) while all the other ones take 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 h. We are the first in line and then we get the bad news - the only return available is at 9 pm with the latest ferry. Given that we are flying out the next day this is much too risky so we decide to try for the other lines. After running from terminal to terminal we come to the conclusion that all the other lines leave too late ... read more

After the long drive through Finland this was thought of as a resting day where we can prepare for our planned trip to Tallinn the next day and our return to the US the following day. After waking up the first thing we do is a quick stop at the nearby supermarket to buy different provisions including Karelian pastry for breakfast. And then it's out to stroll through downtown Helsinki and take a closer look at the many and expensive stores. First stop was the old church close to our hotel that we could visit only from the outside as there was a wedding inside. Continuing down the Bulevardi we arrived at the Stockmann department store, one of the major stores in downtown Helsinki. Went inside and took a look at the products on offer which ... read more

After our last Finnish hotel breakfast we took a short walk through downtown Kuopio. Dock area was quiet that early in the morning and had a nice view of the lakes but unfortunately we didn't spot any of the extremely rare freshwater seals (Saimaa Ringed Seal) rumored to live somewhere in the multitude of connected lakes. After the docks we walked to the central cathedral with an imposing exterior, the interior however was really austere. Then we passed the kauppatori open market area that was completely under construction (underground parking lot?) to arrive at our goal, a small row of preserved wooden houses called Pikku Pietarin. We checked a few of the crafts stores but then we had to hurry back to the hotel as the check out was at 11AM this time. Next destination was ... read more

While we feel a bit of sadness when packing the car to leave the Loma Vietonen area it is tempered by the fact that the rain has caught up with us - it is a drizzly cold morning reminescent of our Turku morning and we hope that maybe, just maybe, we can outrun it again this time going south. Before leaving the area though we stop at a nearby bird tower - Finland is full of them and we already learned the Finnish name for it so we can stop whenever we see a sign pointing to lintutorni. The rain picks up and there are no birds to be seen so we move on to Rovaniemi the capital of the Finnish North and self proclaimed home of Santa Claus. When we get close we find out ... read more

We wake up late due to our midnight arrival the previous day and already at breakfast have a nice reindeer sighting as two reindeer with impressive antlers are ambling through the complex. We go outside and try to snap some photos with them crossing the Arctic Circle - or at least the point marked as the Arctic Circle inside the complex. We also take a tour of the complex seeing the boat harbor and discover that our cabin has also a 2nd floor with additional sleeping space. After all the excitement we drive just a few kilometres to a nearby hiking trail (Tervetuloa Sompasen). We do not have time to do it entirely but we have a nice hike first through the forest while avoiding getting sucked in the marshy areas created by the rains and ... read more

After breakfast we did a short tour of Jakobstad taking a look at the Skata (Old Town) area which has some well preserved wooden buildings and then visiting a nearby park which had some nice maintained gardens. While returning to the hotel we noticed that there was a demonstration downtown on the importance of wearing your seatbelt in the case your car rolls over - scary thought. First stop of the day was a nearby supermarket so we can buy provisions for the Lapland "wilderness". After finishing our preparations we started on the long drive north toward Lapland. Instead of returning to the main highway we decided to take the more scenic route to Karleby (Kokkola) called the Seven Bridges Route (7 Sillan Saaristo) and also to stop by the sea for some sightseeing and pictures. ... read more

Day 3 started under a bit less auspicious signs with constant rain falling outside our hotel window. After eating a large breakfast (love those European hotel breakfasts) we decided to do a short stroll through downtown Turku before leaving northwards. With an eye on the clock to ensure we do not miss the hotel checkout we walked down to the Central Square to buy fresh tomatoes, kantarelli (mushrooms) and bananas from the kauppatori (open market). On the way we stopped also in the kauppahalli (covered market) which was quite a bit more expensive. As the rain intensified we entered a supermarket where we bought provisions for the following days and then returned quite wet to the hotel. First stop north was the Untamala Archaelogy Center with some well preserved wooden buildings and church as well some ... read more

After an early breakfast we went to the airport to pick up the car. Unfortunately the car rental was not opening till 9 so we waited in the airport for 1/2h for the agent to open - most everything was closed as shops either do not open or open up late on Sunday. Finally we got our Prius and before starting west we did first a short side trip in a nearby forest to get some pictures of flowers and found quite a few tasty blueberries. We also had our first encounter with the dreaded Finnish mosquitoes that ran us back to the car. One of the things that we enjoyed throughout Finland were the multiple separate hiking/biking trails near the main roads which made both driving and walking safer. Starting west and avoiding what felt ... read more

After a long flight to Europe Saturday is the first day that we have to roam around Helsinki and luckily we have good weather almost all day. Staying near the airport has its advantages if you want to rent a car however we have to take the airport bus 615 downtown which takes about 1/2h. We get out at the last stop - the central train station - and after taking a few pictures of the modern plaza we continue down to the central artery of Helsinki - the Esplanade. Everything seems curiously empty of tourists until we get to the Kauppatori (open market) and Kauppahalli (covered market) where there is a normal bustle as associated with European capitals. After taking a look at the stands filled with reindeer products from meat to furs and antlers ... read more
