I just turned 25! I don’t feel any different, I haven’t really changed. However I will never forget how I turned 25, because I didn’t celebrate the way I’m used to with cake, dinner with the family and maybe a night out with my friends. I turned 25 in Africa; more specifically I turned 25 on the Nile. The celebration started early in the morning, the day before. We had booked a full day of White Water Rafting. The build up was nerve-racking, and hit its climax when we had to sign the “…the company is not responsible for any incidents or deaths…” paper. We got onto the raft around 10am right underneath the Jinja dam. The water there is really calm and it gave our guide Bret (from South Africa brooo) the chance to give ... read more

We were really excited about going to our first African wedding. We were invited through Julius, as his friend and colleague Emmanuel was the one getting married. First of all we have to say that being invited to a wedding after meeting someone only once was quite strange, but very nice. Emmanuel got married to a lady called Anna who is originally from Kenya. So it was a Ugandan-Kenyan wedding with many guests and lively colours. We arrived after the ceremony in the church and went directly to the reception, which was outside under some big “party tents”. The area was very nicely decorated in white and green, and the scenery really came to life when all the women came with their dresses that were of all colours that one can imagine. We sat and waited ... read more

Based on many peoples advice we’ve clogged our bags with loads of junk. Dear friends - thank you very much for your good intention but: - In Africa they do have toilet paper - They do have batteries - They do have cash machines at almost every corner - And they have a lot of food – people here eat all the time, everywhere and a loooooottttt. So Mammy you don’t have to be worry, I will come back looking like the Michelin man!! Ewa ... read more

We took off from Kampala at around 14.00 on Monday the 17th. Covering the 80km to Jinja I supposed to take around 1h30min, but that is wishful thinking! It took us close to 2h30min, however I suppose that around that time there was a lot of traffic. We opted for the “minibus taxi” that leaves from the old taxi park in Kampala. I think those types of minivans are probably made to seat maximum 10 people, but the driver and his assistant pushed in close to 20. It wasn’t the most comfortable ride, however 4000Ush (approx. $2) per person is quite cheap. As I said the ride was uncomfortable and if I were anywhere in Europe I would probably have s*** myself from the reckless driving. But I thought to myself: “Your in Africa…live fast, die ... read more

I felt like I was once again in India, in Bangalore …. All those IT shops, thousands of vehicles, thousands of people pushing you to buy everything you don’t really need and noise, noise, noise. We were trying to rest, do some sightseeing and we end up…. sipping local beer in an Irish bar. And even though there was a lack of tap beer and European people, we managed to feel a little bit at home. Ewa... read more

The excitement! The desire of knowing new culture and new people! The feeling that we are able to do something really special! This whole WOW disappeared the very first day. Robbed from a newly bought laptop, arguing about everything and nothing, exhausted after almost 24 hours of travelling (yes, yes we wanted to save some cash so we chose the cheapest and the longest flights ….very smart of us!), missing our friends, family, work, facebook and everything we left behind, crying almost like babies we came out of the airport utterly powerless. Uganda wasn’t a great help to us either and welcomed us with unbearable humility, darkness and thousands and thousands of little flies trying to get into our mouth with every breath we took. So yes - being a big girl can sometimes be rough ... read more

We’ve been planning this trip for at least 3 months. First thinking where to go… Australia, South America, Asia, Africa… then to do what… travelling and sunbathing all time (ohh yeaaa), working or volunteering. We started from reading blogs, talking to friends and sending e-mails. And we got many responses – but only one that appeared to us as a challenge and a chance to make our dream come true – mine to engage in protection of human rights and Carl’s to go into the wild! By e-mail we met Julius – a founder of an organization from Jinja in Uganda that takes care of orphans, HIV positive kids, and gives them the opportunity to attend school. So by combining business with pleasure we decided to do as much as possible to help the organization to ... read more
