I had scheduled a meeting with a government official from the State Administration for Foreign Expert Affairs (SAFEA). I've been working on obtaining permits since March so that I can introduce foreign teachers to Chinese schools. I had made a pretty good contact in San Francisco and he got me my meeting after months of getting no where on my own. Luckily for me I had a few friends living in Beijing so I would not need to book a hotel room while I was there. The bad news was that my buddy Zak had his cousin in town and had no room for me to crash at his place. I would end up staying with my friend Riley in Haidan, a district with lots of colleges and expats. The other bad news was that my ... read more

TGIF!!!!! Life has been pretty easy going or we are just used to the life in China or more prepared than last year. Our 2nd week of classes was welcomed with a little cooler weather and another good week of classes. We decided on Friday that we would try to find some foreign restaurants that Pete had found on the Hangzhou expat website and later hit up a social event to meet other ex pats held at JC Mini Golf near West Lake on Nanshan Rd. Our journey to find Pancho's Mexican Restaurant was vague as the website postings only had the road and not an exact address for the restaurant. It did say that it was near Myth Cafe another foreign restaurant which is highly regarded in the expat community but we didn't know where ... read more

Pete's Version I have been assigned to the first year students whom don't start for a while. Well I don't actually start my official teaching schedule until October 11th. This is right after our vacation to the Philippines. Until that time I will have one 90 min class on Tuesdays and I will be helping two students, Chain and Crystal, prepare for a English competition. I meet with them daily except Sat, from 6 - 8:30pm. Tonight I have invited Chain, Crystal, and our student assigned helper Nathan over for dinner. We are going to try and make taco salad. It should be fun. Typically in my evening classes the head of the Business Enghlish department, as this is how its spelled on his business card, hovers over the students and speaks loudly at them in ... read more

Today is our Blog's one year anniversary!!! We were convinced by our great friends, Staci & Martin, to start a blog about our adventures in China. Since Facebook was blocked it was actually a great way to share our experiences and pictures of our daily lives in China and all our upcoming travels(I don't think we had any clue as to how much time we would really have off of work last year). This year it will be fun to look back at last year's posts to remember what we were doing one year ago. There have been several differences that I've noticed between the two cities that deserve mentioning. The first is that when crossing the street here in Hangzhou the drivers first reaction is not to speed up and honk at you. Its often ... read more

I can't believe this, we were given our class schedules, our WHOLE year school calendar and advised that the class times will adjust in October for the "Winter" times(funny since there is no Daylight Savings in China). I asked if the calendar/days off will change at all and they said "no, we stick to the printed schedule." Alleluia! We can start to plan out our honeymoon and other vacations. I will be teaching all 2nd yr students. I have eight 90 minutes classes a week for a total of 16 hrs, plus some other activities for the maximum of 20 hrs per week worked. Two of my classes are for International Trade majors, we will meet once a week for Listening & Speaking. My other 3 classes meet twice a week for Business English majors. We ... read more

WOW!! Is what comes to mind when I think of our experience so far here in Hangzhou. Who knew that a school could actually care so much about the well being of their foreign teachers? I mean, we knew people last year that had great schools but we DID NOT(at least their concern of our living conditions). Now that we are starting Day 4 of being in our apartment we are almost all done with our list of things to do from the school and us. Here is a quick run down of the last few days for us: Thursday, August 26th -arrived at our school around 11:15am to view/move into our apartment. -had lunch with Foreign Affairs Office -unpacked our things -visited Police Station to register our stay -went to Wu Mart(fake Wal-Mart) with Dept ... read more

That time has come and we are back in China. Our 7 weeks flew by that we spent with family and friends while in the USA. I wanted to write about a few things that came to mind when I look back at our long day of travel from San Fran to Vancouver to Shanghai on Air Canada. First, Air Canada was amazing in the fact that they had On Demand movies for our total of 14 hrs of flying today(2 hrs from San Fran to Vancouver and 11 hrs 45 mins onto Shanghai). Next, we both got our first stamp from Canada in our passports passing through the airport today. Then, how we were once again the minority on our plane to Shanghai. Being in the minority is not a bad thing and I find ... read more

We are here, not to witness the beginning of what will be, but rather what already is. In the years they have been together, their love and understanding of each other has grown and matured, and now they have decided to live their lives together as husband and wife. Peter and Elyse, your bond was first formed when the two of you chose to combine your separate lives into one. You have made a mutual commitment to love each other in an atmosphere of ... read more

The night before the wedding we all meet up at the Neighborhood Bar. Elyse was planning on staying with some of her girl friends on this night. It was one of the few traditional customs that we followed for our wedding. It also gave me a chance to hang out with some of my friends before I tied the knot. This involved a few games of beer pong and several rounds of beer. I figured that I wasn't going to get a lot of sleep on account of being nervous so it was best that I just stayed out with my buddies. I didn't start getting nervous until the rehearsal dinner. I was expected to know the order of things as well as my vows and the dreaded steps to our first dance. Elyse left me ... read more

I had stayed with three of my girlfriends at Hotel Mar Monte the night before. The lights went out at 12am. I tossed and turned until 12:55am then slept like a rock until 6:20am. As I woke up I knew I needed to get some more sleep and relax before the big day. Finally at 7:40am I got out of bed and took a nice long relaxing bath to think about the day and soak up every minute. All my friends and family members that have gotten married told me the day would fly by to just stop and soak up the moment when you can. Around 8:30am Sarah, Penny, Stacy and I went to the hotel lobby to meet up with Sarah's parents, Don and Mary. I went to my parents hotel room to get ... read more
