Lonely Planet describes it as a white knuckle ride, and because the Tasman sea and the Pacific ocean meet here, the straits can be very rough. Shirley was not looking forward to the crossing, especially since the other ferry snapped its prop shaft half way over 1 month ago and has been in dry dock since. On the day, it was a pussy. Calm as a milk pond and a very pleasant 3 hour crossing from Wellington on the North Island to Picton on the south. Shirley actually enjoyed it. The scenery coming into the South was stunning. Fantasmagorical. In fact I really have no appropriate words, which is unusual, I know. Nufff to say that we are now half way through our NZ episode and switch to camper van mode in Christchurch in 3 days. ... read more

Leaving Welly behind

Hi guys...I'm still alive. Been let out of the boot after a long journey and am now in well named Windy Wellington. Last night in Napier, the art deco capital of the world, rebuilt in 1931 after destroyed by earthquake. Whole place seemed to shut down at 5 pm, except an Irish bar where we found some food. Wish I was back in the Amazon, which was my favorite place so far. People were brilliant and wildlife not as scary as I thought would be. The earth moved for me in Iquitos when a couple of small tremors triggered the seizmo alarms in the airport whilst waiting for flight back to Lima. Didn't like Lima as too chaotic. Least said the better..a 4 letter word I want to forget. New Zealand. Likes, landed safely.…Auckland OK...Bay of ... read more

OK. Just when we thought it was safe to venture out, it starts pissing it again. I'm not saying that kiwis wouldn't make good politicians but one tells us that they've had 3 months drought and today we were told that they have had the wettest spring in years. Any road up, we seem to have achieved the ideal balance of being in transit during the downpours, and outdoors when it is only drizzling. And have actually had some sunshine, to boot. Still...has to be better than the 6 hours of twilight in the freezer that is Scotland at the moment. Oh how we miss the motherland. Not. Well, that's the weather report. No such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing....according to Billy Conolly, and he is right. Our waterproofs have earned their place in ... read more

The bubble has burst…..along with the big water main in the sky. Cape Reinga, at the northern tip of North Island, is a sacred Maori site where the spirits of the dead are meant to leave this world on their journey home to the spirit world..possibly Glenmorangie or Glencadam, who can be sure? Anyway we must have done something to upset them as it hasn't stopped raining since we returned from there 2 days ago & meant to continue for a few days yet! Like Scottish rain, it is persistant and nearly horizontal with the strong easterly winds, which is also unusual as normal is westerly here. On the bright side...the waterproofs work and vindicate the decision to pack them. We were beginning to think they were an unnecessary excess. The kiwis are well chuffed as ... read more

Spent our first couple of days in Auckland. Its a beautiful city and such a contrast to Lima! Fresh sea air, warm but not humid, and it feels totally safe. Expensive though...but then Peru was very cheap so it feels even worse. Picked up our car and now up in north at bay of islands. Its very scenic and warm. Took day trip to Cape Reinga today.….the northern tip where pacific meets Tasman sea, and you can actually see the different colors where the two oceans meet. Such a contrast after Peru and the amazon, which was fantastic and such a culture change. Feels much more like home than even Australia, except of course its daylight and warm!! Going on a dolphin watch cruise tomorrow (how civilized & touristy is that)..but want to appreciate all the ... read more

After short 2hr flight from Lima we landed in Iquitos in Northern Peru. This is a unique city of over half million people which can only be reached by plane or river. It has a road connecting it with Nauta 70 km away by good road but all other roads are dirt tracks. Most transport is by tuctuc or m/c and the vast majority of houses are very basic wood and corrugated iron. The pop are mostly river / forest Indians who have moved to the city in search of education or a better life.. Having seen the native riverside villages, I think this was maybe a mistake for most, as the people who remain on the river appear to be very content with their lot. They do not use cash, but bring their produce to ... read more

I started writing this in Cusco airport waiting for Lima flight and chose title purely for alliteration. However it has proved to be horribly prophetic. Who has ever heard of an entire city of 9 m people totally banning the sale or consumption of alcohol for 48 hrs before & on the day of a major civic election? Well....you guessed it...Lima does..& it just so happens that the election is on Sunday..so no wine till Monday here! Luckily we head to Amazon tomorrow, but meantime really are drinking lemonade...yeughh! I assume they don't trust people to tick the favored box after imbibing uno coppa or dos. who knows, but I bet Pachacuchec didn't inflict that on his people. Agua Calientes was a unique place with no road access and only buses up & down mountain to ... read more

Spent two days in Ollantytambo, which is a beautiful Inca town in the sacred valley, at the foot of a fantastic Inca temple. They build all their stuff as high up the mountain as possible and the architecture and engineering is incredible. They were way ahead of Europeans in so many ways eg they had sussed that the world was round long before we did. Unfortunately they were a long way behind in military hardware so their stones and spears were no match for Spanish cannon! Or smallpox, also brought by the conquistadors. However their legacy has done wonders for Peruvian economy, not to mention t shirt and plastic condor sales! Ate my first guinea pig (Cuy) a couple of days ago and safe to say, it will be my last. It was orrible...... Crisp greasy ... read more

3rd day in Peru and despite every precaution I've suffered some mild altitude sickness. Mainly headache and dizziness, but some loss of appetite which is very unusual for me! Mind you I did have an Alpaca steak with some nice Peruvian beer on arrival at Cusco which sits at 3500mtr despite advice to have light meal and no alcohol for first 2 days. Spent today at 4000mtr seeing lots of amazing Inca ruins in fierce heat, then further light lunch of fillet steak and spaghetti in raspberry sauce (amazing) and more beer for just £6! The people are very friendly but the street sellers in city center are a pain. Met Bruce Robertson's secret brother today...he was our guide..see pic! Tomorrow we head to Sacred valley then up Machu Picchu Tuesday. Wardrobe malfunction!! Someone stole Ross's ... read more
