We're spending this winter away in Australia altough, with unusually milder weather so far in Niagara on the Lake, there is less of an incentive to escape the typically harsh cold and snowy conditions. Before leaving, we did experience the Ice Wine Festival in Niagara which spanned a 2 week period in January and various events were hosted by a number of communities in the Region. For those who are unfamiliar with Ice Wine, it's a very unique product that is made from frozen grapes which obviously gives Canada some advantages over Vineyards in other countries. It's a very good product for Export and the Industry has enjoyed growing demand, particularly in Asia and USA. In order to meet the Niagara's VQA (Vintners Quality Assurance), grapes must be harvested in -8 degrees Celcius temperatures which raises ... read more

North America » Canada » New Brunswick » Fredericton September 10th 2016

After a very enjoyable, but hot summer in Niagara on the Lake, we started out September touring around the Maritimes and the New England Coast. Our first stop (after a 9 hour drive through upper New York State, Massachusetts, New Hampshire), was in Ogunquit, Maine, a beautiful former fishing village and now a coastal resort town just south of Kennebunkport. This was a good 1/2 way point on the 15 hour drive. There's numerous restaurants, hotels, a nice beach and a scenic walking trail along the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately, we were unable to explore in more depth as we only stayed one night. Of course, the next day before heading to New Brunswick, we had to make the obligatory visit to a big Outlet Mall in Kitterry to buy "stuff" we don't need just because it ... read more

North America » Canada » Quebec » Charlevoix June 2nd 2016

A few days ago, I officially joined the ranks of Senior Citizenship (although Debra would say I joined quite some time ago). To help commemorate and celebrate the occasion, Debra surprised me by commissioning a special painting to be done by Laurent Lafleur, an artist who's work we've admired for a long time. He has a studio in La Malbaie, a small quaint village in the Charlevoix area. For those who don't know, Charlevoix is a beautiful region in Eastern Quebec, not far from New Brunswick, on the north coast of the St. Lawrence Seaway. It has some of the highest mountains (not as high as the Rockies) in the Canadian shield and as such, the area offers dramatic scenery. Because of the natural landscape, it has attracted, for many years, Artists from all over the ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Gordon's Bay March 15th 2016

Well we are in the final stretch of our "winter getaway" returning home on March 25 which is Good Friday. It has been such a wonderful trip to Namibia/South Africa and our stay in Gordon's Bay was most pleasant. In spite of that, it's always good to be home, although Debra insists I finish off the winter with a golf trip to Florida with my brother and others. (Departing for a week on March 28th) One of the highlights over the past 2 weeks was the Starlight Concert which is held on the grounds of the beautiful Vergelegan Winery. We attended the concert on our last trip to South Africa and enjoyed it so much, that we were eagerly awaiting this year's performances. The weather didn't disappoint us and there were 13 in our group, sitting ... read more

As indicated in an earlier Blog, Debra insisted we return to Hermanus to explore, more extensively, this community. In addition to playing golf at the very scenic golf resort of Arabella and the impeccably manicured Hermanus golf club, we enjoyed the majestic views along the shore trail that borders downtown. We stayed over 2 nights at a very comfortable B&B, Dorpshuys Hermanus, that was nestled in a very quite neighbourhood within a15 minutes walk of downtown. Two yummy dinners, a little shopping and touring some smaller communities such as Stanford, completed our 3 day adventure to this very popular area of the Western Cape. For those interested, there are some lovely properties in this resort area that could be purchased for appx $300,000 CDN. Got my hair cut while in Hermanus, $8.00 CDN plus tip. Not ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Gordon's Bay February 15th 2016

We continue to explore some smaller communities, that are day trips from Gordon's Bay. Wellington is about 45 minutes away and features a couple of large distilleries and quite a few wineries. Debra stopped someone in a shopping mall to ask directions and found out he was from New York City. He married a girl from the area and they are now trying to decide where to live, New York or Wellington. Quite a contrast between the two. Greyton which is about 1 hours drive has a feel similar to Niagara on the Lake. There are lots of restaurants and shops along Main Street and on Saturday there was a small market featuring, once again, all kinds of yummy foods. We ended up having a very tasty Pizza for lunch and on the way out, stopped ... read more

We've now settled into a routine. Have had 2 golf lessons, played 2 rounds of golf and going to the gym for our regular work outs including some nice walks along Strand Beech. Our friends Harry and Susan invited us again for a lovely lunch at Hartenberg Winery after which we visited their friends Nicole and Guy who live high up in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. Guy works in the reserve and has just retired. It was a very pleasant visit. Nicole served some tea/coffee, desert and some Koeksisters, which are a South African sweet that is addictive. (That's all I need is something else to add to the caloric intake)!!! They are made similar to a donut in texture and have a sugar glaze on the outside. After saying farewell to Namibia, we settled into our Winter home in Gordon's Bay. Upon arrival, as typical, our hosts Jane and Jim greeted us warmly and provided a few provisions to help get set up. Shopping the next day, we discovered a new "Checkers" grocery store that would be as good as most Loblaws in Canada. So we loaded up with lots of fruit and vegetables (Debra is now determined to get back to basics after a couple of weeks of eating out and not exercising) I did manage to slip a couple of small bags of chips and a few cookies into the cart!!! We joined the golf driving range for our 10 week stay, have arranged golf lessons at the Helderberg Golf Academy, signed up at the gym, which is within walking distance ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Etosha National Park January 11th 2016

Every trip has some disappointments and for us our accommodations for two days in the Etosha area was below expectations. Anderson Camp was quite old and not updated so compared to the other accommodations, it was below standard although the cost was similar. It did have a good location and with an electric fence, we were able to view close up, quite a few animals that came to the watering hole. They also had a neat underground tunnel (hide)where you get very close. We decided to do a "self drive" through the Etosha Game Reserve and in hindsight, probably would have enjoyed it more with a guided tour. It's a big area and if you're unsure as to where the game are located, a lot of time is spent driving. It was also the rainy season, ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Damaraland January 10th 2016

After a 5 hour drive, we arrived in Camp Kipwe in the Damaraland, named after the Damara Tribe. The Camp was very unique, nestled amongst an oasis of boulders protruding out of the desert. The bathroom which was attached to our tented lodge was outdoors with running water and quite well "appointed". Meals were good, staff helpful and they had a beautiful area on top of the boulders where you could sit with a glass of wine and watch a gorgeous sunset. Very romantic!!!! We did three tours while in the area: - visited a living museum where members of the Damaraland tribe provided a tour and demonstration of a traditional Damaraland village and culture. This was somewhat "amateurish" but we did take away some good understanding of how these people lived (better described as survived) ... read more
