Africa April 3rd 2014

Sadly we are leaving South Africa arriving home on April 4th. We said goodbye to Highcliffe House on April 1st and spent a couple of days in Paternoster which is on the West Coast of South Africa, about 1 1/2 hours outside of Cape Town. It is a small, quaint, fishing village that has a very long beach and a beautiful Nature Preserve, called Cape Columbine. See pictures of both. The coast line is very rugged and the coastal waves in the Park are large and muscular (For those who have visited Peggy's Cove, it reminded us of that area of Nova Scotia only 10 times larger). For the camping enthusiast, there are a number of camp sites with toilet and shower facilities. It would certainly offer a unique camping experience with the sounds and smells ... read more

We finally found time to hike in the Helderberg park, with great trails for hiking enthusiasts. Throughout the trails there were some magnificent plants and flowers, Proteas etc. There are a number of different trails from easy to extreme( for experienced climbers/hikers only) and since we started in the afternoon, we were only able to do the 2 hour trail. We experienced a great wine tasting at Waterkloof which is a beautiful winery overlooking Gordon's Bay. Jane and Jim invited us and we hope to return there to try out their menu. Also had lunch at Longbridge which was good but not quite as "goumetish" as Jordon Winery that we visited last week. On the way home, stopped by Morgenster for an Olive oil tasting which was quite interesting. For those of us who are ignorant ... read more

It truly is a small world. As indicated in last week's blog, we had dinner with Chris and Jan Little who Debra worked with at the ScotiaBank. This week our friends, Ken and Diane Cranston, stayed at Highcliffe House for a couple of days in advance of their organized Tour. Ken also worked at Scotiabank and knows both Chris and Jan. Coincidentally they will both be at the same Hotel on the same day when visiting Victoria FallsWith Ken and Diane, we had a nice lunch at Jordon Winery. The food was gourmet and of course the views were post card perfect. In addition, we stopped at Van Ryn's for a Brandy tour that was very informative and interesting. The Brandy and chocolate pairing was a delightful experience. We also toured Robben's Island prison, just off ... read more

An interesting week! Wednesday we met up with some "Scotiabankers" in Cape Town. Debra worked with Chris and Jan Little and they are touring South Africa. We had a nice dinner with them at the Victoria and Albert waterfront. In advance of meeting up with Chris and Jan, we took a 2 hour tour of the Cape Town Heart Museum at the Groote Shur Hospital (it means Big Barn and was a farm owned by Cecil Rhodes who gave it to Cape Town to build a new hospital). Dr. Christian Barnard conducted the 1st human heart transplant in 1967. This was very interesting and informative tour of an amazing event that took place 47 years ago. The tour and presentations were very well done and included a re-creation of the operating theatres in which the transplant ... read more

We are now back in Gordon's Bay after a much better return flight Toronto/Amsterdam/Cape Town. There was only and 2 1/2 hour layover in Amsterdam and the total travel time was around 23 hours. We found a really great web site that we used to get the best flights. It's http://matrix.itasoftware.com. You can't book through the site, but it covers most air routings around the world, all major airlines and the costs. There is also an app for those using Apple. It's very easy to use and even provides a graph showing the lowest fare over a span of dates. App is ITA Software, "on the fly". I think the ITA is for International Travel Association. This week we got settled back into our apartment at Highcliffe House after receiving a warm welcome back from Jane ... read more

We've decided to return to Gordon's Bay and finish our "winter getaway" returning home on April 4th so will start sending blogs again. We were glad to have come home for my sister's funeral service and to be able to spend time with family. It was a very appropriate service and Linda would have been very pleased. All her family were there as well as a lot of good friends many of whom gave her great support during her illness. She will be greatly missed!!!Just before we were called home, we had just left Gordon's Bay and drove for a couple of days to the Drakensberg area which borders Lesotho. Lesotho is a separate country but surrounded by South Africa. On the way, we stopped at Graff Reinet which is in the "Free State". Close by was ... read more

This is our last Blog for South Africa. Unfortunately we had to cut short our visit and return home. My sister, who has been ill took a turn for the worst and passed away on February 7th the day after we arrived back home. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her!!! Debra had a minor health issue that required a consultation. Jane(our hostess) arranged for an appointment with her Doctor in which we were able to see within a couple of hours and the total costs with some medication was $49.00 CDN. It's anecdotal but quite a difference to the Canadian system!!! We found a place that serves reasonably good oysters, called "Thirsty Oyster" Still not as good as PEI/NB. Spent the day in Cape Town which is only about 45 minutes from Gordon's Bay and an easy drive on the N2 (freeway). We took the "Hop on and off" bus, the red route which lasts about 2 hours and covers the city center and some of the coastal areas around the city. See pictures of Camps Bay beech which is an area where the notables of South Africa visit and is used regularly to shoot TV commercials etc. A beautiful beech area. We hopped off the bus and had lunch here. Spent the balance of the day at Victoria and Albert Waterfront development which is one of the nicest shopping, dinning and entertainment areas that we've seen anywhere in the world!! Cape Town is a very dynamic city and appears to have a thriving economy. ... read more

Did our usual wine tours on Saturday and had lunch at Hartenberg Winery. The food and wine was good but not quite as good as Somerbosch last week. Also visited Beyerskloof winery which are noted for their Pinotage which we bought a bottle along with their very nice port. On the way to Stellenbosch we stopped by a craft market in Somerset West which offered many unique local crafts that we found quite interesting and certainly not the "run of the mill" craft market. Attended an outdoor concert in Helderberg park which is in Somerset West and about 20 minutes from Gordons Bay. The band was The Shiraz who originated in England and were formerly called The Dooley's. Apparently they were quite a competitive band to Abba back in the late sixties early seventies Jane and ... read more

After spending a little time at our new practise range, we have our first golf game at the Strand Golf Course. The green fees for Debra and I with pull carts was a total of $55.00. By joining the South Africa Golf Association we get affiliate rates at most of the courses which is considerable savings. The membership cost $230.00 for both Debra and I. Even without the membership, golf is very reasonable. The Strand course would be comparable to Hidden Lake (for those who know that course). On Thursday we played De Zalze Golf which would be a considered a premium course in Canada, certainly to the level of a Club Link Gold Course. With the SAGA membership, the green fees were $32.00. This is a beautiful course nestled amongst the vineyards. It also has ... read more
