Dec 10,11,12 Pranburi Dolphin Bay Resort We are now on the south western side of the Gulf of Thailand at a small family resort. It was a 4 hour drive to get here, an hour of that was just getting through the city. This place isn’t as nice as Ko Chang, but it is much nicer than Bangkok. It is hot out here so we are just sitting around, enjoying the water and sunshine. Dec. 13, 14 Kanchanaburi Pranburi was a nice, quick little retreat from Bangkok but then it was time to get moving again. We hopped on a local bus in Pranburi - no one spoke English - and headed back to Bangkok where we made a quick change of busses. We barely had time to find a ticket booth - it’s a big ... read more

Nov. 30 Camodia this morning, Koh Chang, Thailand, this evening. We missed the bus from Bangkok to here so had to take a cab. Still cheaper than flying or taking the hotel car. Then once on the island we rode in a share taxi to the resort. The share taxi had 13 passenger and was just a truck with a covered back. That is where we rode. Our resort is very nice. We have a cabin with a king size bed and still lots of room. It has a tv, fridge and safe plus a modern bathroom. It is super clean and comfy. There is also a porch with a table and chairs on it, plus a roof top terrace. All this is beach front. I think we are going to enjoy this next week. Dec ... read more

Nov 27-29 Siem Reap, Cambodia After three days here, we are still enjoying this place. To say, “Wow” about Cambodia pretty much sums up this area of the country. It is a very pretty place with all the green rice fields, the orchards, gardens, all the temples, and of course the people themselves. Even the large numbers of peddlers who constantly hound us at the temple sites are tolerable because for the most part, they have a good sense of humour and they do take ‘no’ for an answer. (especially when said in their language even though English is like a first language to them). There are also a fair number of beggars about, most of whom are victims of land mines. They are bit harder to say no to, but they are very much part ... read more

Nov 19th Saigon So, we are back in Saigon after two days in Can Tho. All I can really say about Can Tho ( and Hue) is that they are dirty, rat infested cities. Wouldn't recommend either to anybody. The other places have been quite nice though. I would return to both Hanoi and Hoi An in a flash. I suspect that some of the beach communities would nice also, but unfortunately the weather is not cooperating. Yesterday in Can Tho we had a major thunder and lightening storm which dumped massive amounts of water. Today when we arrived in Saigon we were met with another deluge of water, flooding everything in sight. At least when we arrived here at our hotel, it had not yet rained, until we decided to head out for a bite ... read more

Nov 16: Can To Time to do a little updating. We have spent a lot of our last few days traveling, but let me start with Hoi An. This is a must stop for anyone traveling Vietnam. It is sometimes referred to as the Macau of Vietnam because it is an old city with lots of French history. The “Historic City Centre” has lots of French influence and is of course, very touristy. We enjoyed just wandering around the area. One day was spent doing this, the next we took a tour to My Son (Mee Sung) which was a temple area older than Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. Not much left of it thought after the Americans got through bombing it. They did leave a lot of vehicles, helicopters and such behind though. In fact, a couple ... read more

Nov 8 Hue Arrived here yesterday afternoon and were picked up at the airport. Totally uneventful except that all the low lying areas are flooded…and it is still raining. Our hotel/hostel is hidden away down a narrow, muddy back ally but otherwise it is a nice enough place. Clean, with hot water, what more can we ask for. This morning we booked into a river cruise to see more tombs, and bit of the area. It was mainly for something to do that kept us partly out of the rain. Otherwise, not an especially exciting day. Keep the notes coming from home, it’s good to hear from everybody. Nov 10 Today is our travel day to Hoi An. We leave on the afternoon bus for a four hour ride. Not looking forward to it. Yesterday we ... read more

Nov 1-5 Back in Hanoi “Hallo. You buy from me. You buy from me, I give you cheap. You buy from her, you buy from me. You happy? Me happy.’ And so it went while visiting the villages near Sapa. And yes, I bought a small embroidered purse to carry the camera in, and was then pressured into buying a braclet…for $1.50. But before I go into the details of our Sapa trip, I must finish the excursion back from Cat Ba Island. Our ride was a little on the unnerving side as we were herded into a van that in Canada would be licensed for 14 people plus a driver. This one had enough seating for 23 people, including the driver. Now add this to narrow, windy, hilly roads…I won’t say anymore. So after ... read more

Oct 27 Hanoi This morning was good bye to all our friends as we left them at the hotel. It was a two hour flight to here, and then another half hour to get our visas and through customs. You wouldn’t believe the place we are staying in. At 18 dollars a night, we are on the 3rd floor, no elevator. The room is about 8x12 with a bathroom/shower combination. It has a king size bed in it, a fridge, closet, dresser between the foot of the bed and the wall, and a desk. All small which leaves just enough room to move about. But the kids running the show seem really nice and are probably a bit surprised to have us here. Early to bed and off on a city tour tomorrow. The room may ... read more

Overnight here was enough. I think this city has become the factory capital of China. The smog is unimaginally thick. You can actually feel it on your skin. It is silky greasy. The Panda were cute but kind of dirty looking. This is also where we ldft our cruise.... read more
