Masaya . . yah!
Great blog! That was a bit nostalgic for me, seeing your photos of Grenada, the market and the volcano. Those fumes WERE pretty strong. That was an extremely interesting volcano. I had never seen one with that kind of inverted cone. And we loved hanging out in that square in Grenada. Keep writing!

I've only ever been to Costa Rica among the central American countries. Your blog is making me think I've been missing a lot by only going there. Is it fair to say that even the small countries still feel "big" once you're in them?

El Salvador
Hey Eric! We are in Costa Rica at the moment. And the other countries are different than it, more so due to the less infrastructure and less westernization, which is a good thing in some ways. You get a real flavour of culture and the latino way of doing things. Costa Rica has had such an influx of ex-pats from N.America that it is comfortable, but something is lost through this. Stay tuned for our future entry on Costa Rica....

Honduran deployment
In 1990,I was in the Virginia Air Guard and we had a summer deployment to Honduras. While we didn't get a chance to visit any of the places you mentioned, we did get a chance to visit the capital on our off weekend. In regards to your adventure on the bus, we had similar experiences. During the bus ride, everytime we passed from one province to another, we had to stop so the local police, could walk on our bus to make sure we had the exact number we started out with. This happened several times, coming and going. Another time, we passed what looked like a public execution about to take place. Our bus driver told us to continue to look straight ahead and pretend we didn't see anything. Because most of our ride took place in the mountains, and the bus drivers were not afraid of passing at any given time, numerous times we could look out our window and see sheer drop-offs. In one curve, we noticed where a shanty had been built for living quarters. While that wasn't so unusal, what was unusal, was that they family was slaughtering a pig on the side of the road inside the curve. Over the years, after traveling to third world nations, I've never been so thankful to appreciate what I do have compared to those who have no idea what they don't have. Really enjoy your blogs.
