After a very restful night's sleep, I wake up to the rain. It was still coming down pretty good which made for a great reason to lay around a bit. I took a cold shower which actually felt really good since the room was without AC and then headed downstairs for breakfast. This is where I discovered the best jam! It was mango and something and home made. I put extra extra on my bread! The rain stopped right at 10 am which was perfect timing since I had to check out of my room. The front desk agreed to watch my bag and I set out to see the town. As it turned out, there was not that much to see. I was able to wonder north to the WWI and WWII memorial and then ... read more

Well, on Friday, I sent out on my first weekend adventure. I made my way down to the Patterson Shipping company office because they operate the ferry boat that travels to Levuka. Levuka is the first capital of Fiji and has some great historical buildings so I decided to make it a weekend trip. Well, like everything else in Fiji, time is not the most important. The bus was supposed to pick up at 1:30. At about 1:45, it drove by jam packed with people. We are then told that a second bus is on its way. At 2:30, we find out, that bus forgot to stop for us. The company calls for another bus and around 3 pm we're finally on our way. This bus is one step up from my typical daily town bus...it ... read more

My host father and I were talking about our families and he asked if I wanted to see the video of his youngest daughters wedding. Of course, I said yes! Its a two day affair with their extended family coming from several countries including Australia, Canada and the US. There are gifts presented and lots of music and dancing. There are special ceremonies that just involve the husband to be and the bride's father. Then special ceremonies just for the bride to be. It was all so interesting. I loved watching how involved each member of the family and extended family are involved. The wedding itself was beautiful. The bride looked amazing! She was in this beautiful red dress trimmed with jewels and gold decoration. They she had on this cool jewelry and make-up that included ... read more

Well, I've made a break through. A girl in the afternoon school session that has spent the last two days doing nothing by hissing at me said hello to me today with a big cheerie smile. Ah, nothing like bribing kids with stickers! No more spiders to report. Thank god. I'm beginning to settle in with the roaster. Pradeep is joking that he's going to make a good dinner out of him. I really hope I'm not at home if this goes down! Last night at the house was fun. I was spending time with Preneel and their neighbors two children that are 16 and 18. They were asking me if I spoke other languages. I said, not really but that I learn basic words in the language for all of the places I've traveled. So, ... read more

Hello all, The funniness continues... So when I left the internet shop yesterday, I got onto the public bus to go home. Oh my...so funny! The bus is basic...really basic! The seats, not so much cushion. The windows...um, there are none. That's right. Why have windows and AC when you have the south pacific wind! Once moving, its great, but while I waited the 15 minutes for the bus to leave the main station (and by station, just a parking lot), I'm pretty sure I sweat at least half my body weight. Here is one thing I have already accepted...I'm going to smell for the next month. There's no way around it. No place has AC. The sun is unbelievably hot, ceiling fans are limited and its humid. And, as if this was not enough to ... read more

Hello all, Well, I've made it to my destination and home for the next month. Some of you know, some of you don't...I quite my job, moved out of my apt in Ft Lauderdale and have embarked on an adventure. Part one of the adventure has me in Fiji. More specifically, I'm in the town of Nausori. I signed up for a volunteer program through a group called Projects Abroad and am living with a host family and working in a school for the next month. I left the US on Thursday, February 3. I'm not going to lie, I was super excited as I walked into the Miami airport. I was practically bursting at the seems. AS I stood in line to check in, I started speaking with the girl standing in front of me. ... read more

We got up at our leisure again and went in to the lodge for another fantastic breakfast. Day four in a row of having the best scrambled eggs! Oh, and coffee!!! This morning, I had another special encounter. The monkeys were back and it was pretty quite in the room. I walked over to the big windows to get a little closer to our morning friends. One of the younger ones jumped onto the roof and then onto the ledge next to the window. I put my hand flat on the window and he reached out and touched the window too...right where my hand was! It was pretty cool! Mom went back to the room to get ready for the day's adventure. I stayed in the main building to send some emails and then when I ... read more

On Thursday morning we got up at our leisure which really is one of the best things about vacation...no real schedule or timetable! We had another great breakfast - no monkeys this morning though, they had eaten already! At 9:45 am we were picked up to go on our coffee plantation tour. Originally, we weren't going to do a coffee tour, but Ivonne at the Lodge recommended it and said that it was an activity well worth it. So, off we went. I climb into the mini van and the only seats left are backwards...um, this is not going to go well with my motion sickness. And of course, the paved road quickly ended and onto the gravel we went. Let's just say I was very happy to arrive at the plantation. We pulled in and ... read more

Our alarm clock went off at 6 am and I woke with a start. I could still hear the winds gusting, but they also seemed to calm down a bit. The lodge offers breakfast and so we dressed and decided to eat up in preparation for our hike. We knew we'd be walking for approximately 2 to 3 hours. Breakfast was fantastic and I've had the best eggs of all time. They have their own chickens here that lay eggs as well as grow most of their own fruits and veggies. They make their own jams too! Coffee is the big thing here and so instead of drinking my usual tea in the morning, I've made a switch. Oh boy! For the first time in my life, I LOVE coffee! I add a little sugar and ... read more

After two years of planning, Mom and I have finally arrived in Costa Rica. Since both of our birthdays are in November and we turned 60 and 30 in the same year, we decided this was our birthday celebration. Now 62 and 32, the trip is just as sweet! We took a non-stop flight out of Miami on Tuesday morning and in less than 3 hours we were here! I couldn't believe how quick the flight was. Immigration and customs was pretty uneventful. We made our way through with no problems. The airport is so small that as soon as you cleared customs, you were outside. We had arranged private transport through our hotel in Santa Elena and he was supposed to be waiting for us with a sign at the exit. Now, I'm not sure ... read more
