Welp, 8 days later, I swear I am alive. School work is getting legit and midterms start next week. Not to mention, I have a giant Italian test on Thursday that I really need to study for tonight or there will be a problem... Everyone who says study abroad classes are "fluffy" and "GPA boosters" and "easy A's" did not come to Umbra. I do more homework here than at Bonaventure. This week has been pretty busy homework-wise. Last weekend we stayed in Perugia but made the most of it in every way possible. We went to a different club every night and got a meter long pizza on Saturday. The earliest I got home over the weekend was 4:30am Sunday. This, and the STILL miserable weather are most likely the reasons for the surprise head ... read more

I figured after 1,346 words, it was getting lengthy so welcome to the second part! Where was I again? Oh yes, Florence :) After out museum fest, we shopped around at some great stores. We also walked through the street leather market. Long story short, after lots of bargaining and second guessing, we all purchased a leather bag each and they all had an imprint that said “made in Italy” on it. That night we went to dinner at a place recommended by the hotel when we asked where to get Florentine steak. It was pretty good, I had lasagna, Abby had roasted chicken and potatoes and Carrie got a steak! I can admit to the repetition of pasta that I ate in Florence, but it was seriously so good I didn’t want to bother with ... read more

Hello, readers! I am back in Perugia from my wonderful adventure in Florence. I’m thinking how I should blog about this: I tool 142 pictures and have 4 day’s worth of things to talk about, but don’t want to make this extremely long and bore anyone. We’ll see how this turns out I guess. Maybe I’ll make it a 2 part thing if I really end up writing a lot. Work with me, peeps. So. On Thursday the 2nd ( Groundhog Day!) the 3 of us, me Carrie and Abby, had class til 6:45, but had a 7:39 train to catch to Florence. The Archaeological Discoveries class that I’m in with Abby brought us to this museum about a 15 minute walk from the school, so we knew we were going to cut it late if ... read more

I know I said I most likely wouldn’t post another blog before I went to Florence. I guess I just assumed I wouldn’t do anything in between that time, but I lied. I couldn’t let these pictures go unshared. Today we woke up to the one form of weather I hate most: SNOW. And I’m not talking the cute flurries we had in class last night, I’m talking a blizzard. From our window we saw cars parked, covered in snow, an accident with 2 more cars and people shuffling along with umbrellas. What we didn’t see was the great view we normally get to enjoy every morning when we open our window…it was just white. All day I have been mentally complaining and hating everyone who told me last year it snowed, but it was one ... read more

Happy Wednesday! Even though it’s 12am on Wednesday right now. Anyway. This week has been so far so good! On Monday in my Food History class we had a surprise eggplant workshop! The syllabus said there was supposed to be a wine tasting that day, and a quiz the next day, but that was some reason not the case. I still got a 14/15 on the quiz (stupid mistake on my part) even though I came in expecting a wine tasting. So we take the quiz, and then continue on to our lesson. In the middle of that, the guy who works in the little grocery store right next to school runs in the room, smiling and yelling random things to all of us in Italian. It seriously seemed staged to me, but definitely wasn’t. He ... read more

This weekend has been pretty slow. On Thursday we braved the city ourselves. Just the 3 of us went out for drinks at Dempsey’s, our other peeps are out of town. Luckily, when we were at a bar a big group of Umbra students came in, so we ended up talking to a bunch of people then heading to another place called LunaBar. It was pretty fun, lots of dancing to songs in Italian, Spanish and English. Of course we had to take a trip to the illegal bakery before heading home. Did I talk about those already? A bakery that's open after hours, when businesses are supposed to closed, they don't give out reciepts and you usually have to knock on the closed door to get service. I had another bambolini con nutella. Seriously words ... read more

So I Skyped with my sister, Maria, last night for over an hour and it made me miss her so much! I thought it was pretty funny when she told me she read this blog and noticed that the only foods I’ve talked about eating are pizza and pasta. Hi Maria, if you’re reading this! You are 100% correct. Basically the only things I have eaten here ARE pizza, pasta, risotto and gelato. Italian staples, yes, but I’m beginning to wonder if I’ll ever eat anything else here! Like are we passing some secret restaurant every day that we don't know about?? Yesterday was our friend Alex’s birthday. He’s another friend from Bonaventure. We were at a friend’s house 2 nights ago so we could celebrate at midnight with him. After, we went to 2 bars ... read more

I strongly believe in not talking about plans until they are set in stone. That is only why I just mentioned that we were going to buy tickets to Pisa. Luckily, everything turned out as planned (doesn’t happen often here!) and we got to spend the day there without a hitch. To describe myself as “happy” would be an understatement. At 9:15am yesterday my 2 roommates and I met up with 2 other girls, one of them from St. Bonaventure, at the MiniMetro station. We took that to the train station, bought tickets from Perugia to Pisa Centrale. They were 14.75E both ways. Not bad! The train took us from Perugia 2 hours north to Florence, where we got off, ran to get a snack, and then ran to another train going to Pisa. The next ... read more

"Thank God it's Thursday." Even though it's now Friday, that's my new favorite phrase to use here. Why don't we have 4 day weeks at school in the US? It's really just a better plan for everyone. Yesterday we finished up the first full week of classes. We went to dinner at a place called Il Falchetto which is right next to our school and not even a 2 minute walk from our apartment. We went with 2 other friends, all ordered pasta and split a bottle of wine. I got spinach and ricotta gnocchi but they sound better than they actually were. I got tiramisu for dessert because I just couldn't pass it up! After, around 11pm, we met up with more friends at a bar called Dempsey's, right in the main square. A pretty ... read more

Today started off pretty slow. I only had Italian from 10-10:50, napped and made literally a pound of pasta for my roomates (we couldn't finish it). Around 4 I was getting pretty antsy to go do something. I figured it would be a good time to go shopping since all the sales around here are supposed to end this week, or so I heard. So off I went! Two stores and 3 outfits later, I was kind of getting frustrated. Were all the medium and large sizes gone or does everyone here really just wear a small? The one dress I've been eyeing in a window for about 2 days was too small when I tried it on :(. On my way walking back home I went into one more store, tried on a few things, ... read more
