Ahhhhhhhh! I found INdia again! AFter 2 months in Goa and a few days in Hampi I was wondering...!!! But now I am finally in Mysore, a real INdian city and although I just arrived yesterday, I am in love with the place already! The birthplace of Ashtanga Yoga! The trip to get here was uneventful, I said good bye to my friends who were going to Varanasi the same day I was leaving for Bangalore and then Mysore. Met a lot of tourists at the train station, even some from Montreal! And also ran into some yogis from Goa who were also going to Bangalore to then move on to another city. It was a night train, I slept a little bit, and arrived in Bangalore early in the morning. From there I took a ... read more

I left Goa, finally, and travelled by train to Hospet, then by rickshaw to Hampi. The train ride was not too long and quite fun, with LOTS of great food on the way. All the indian specialties, I arrived with a full belly. Which was a good thing because by the time we arrived in Hampi (I say "we" because I was travelling with 2 yoga students from Goa), it was getting dark, we still had to cross the river on a little boat, and then we tried to find a place to stay. I really didn't expect to see so many tourists, the place is FULL of guest houses and they were all full too... We walked and walked and looked everywhere and couldn't find a place to stay except for one small jail-type room, ... read more

Incredible, I was in Goa for more than 50 days and it seemed like a long time and now it is over! Today is my last day, I am super excited to leave even if I will miss Goa and the people I know here. I will come back anyway in a month to pick up a huge load of things that I don't need to carry with me on my way south. My last weeks in Goa were not super busy with exploring, although I did go to a spice farm close to Ponda. The experience was OK, but the farm I went to was very much a tourist attraction, they seem to be doing the same thing over and over again so it didn't have the authentic feeling that you find is smaller family-run ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Benaulim December 21st 2009

Just a quick blog this time, to tell the story about my trip south to Benaulim.... Benaulim is another village close to the beach, a little south of Candolim where I am staying now. I left Saturday morning, took the bus to Panjim, then to Margao and finally to Benaulim. I forgot lesson number one: never sit at the back of the bus, ESPECIALLY if you don't know where you are going. The bus may look empty at first, but this will change soon... So I was, of course, sitting at the back of the bus. Most buses have 2 doors, one at the back: this one had only the front door. I had no idea where to get off so I asked a nice lady. When we got close to Benaulim she said politely: "I ... read more

Yesterday was a day without yoga practice, so as I had planned I decided to visit Old Goa. This was "the big city" when the Portuguese were here and Old Goa is known for its churches, cathedrals, convents, etc. So after breakfast, I took the bus to Panjim first, and then to Old Goa. Taking the bus... Well, for people who have never been in India, maybe I should mention a few things. Buses are very frequent here, not expansive, but also not so comfortable. Well, they get VERY crowded and the drivers can be a bit...hum...crazy. Usually there is a driver and then a "manager". I don't really know how they are called but these guys work their bums off... They can say the destination of the bus at a rate of probably 3 times ... read more

Hard to believe I arrived in Goa a month ago! Maybe because I don't move much outside of Candolim and the surrounding areas, it is hard to believe that I spent a whole month here. But about a week ago I was thinking each day was extremely long... I spent a whole week with a stomach bug, and I was doing even less things, not even yoga practice, and being close to Christmas on top of that, I developped another disease: I became homesick! As much as I love India, I realized how much I love to spend Christmas with my family and how much nicer it is when you have a white Christmas... And how much it sucks to be sick and away from home! But now I am healthy again, and although I would ... read more

I said already that yoga students here have a lot in common... Well, I just found out this Monday morning that we all shared something else too... The bad food from the German Bakery! Actually I only found out on Tuesday morning after some friends worried about me after I didn't show up for yoga practice for 2 days... They came to see me and this is when I heard that 10 other yogis had been sick and we then found the common denominator which was the restaurant were we all ate the morning before some strange melodies started coming from our guts... So that morning, as we were again eating breakfast in a (hopefully) safer restaurant, we all shared our experience of the previous day and night... It was hilarious. Some had it worse than ... read more

Another week went by in Goa. It's funny how we do nothing and yet it seems like the days are just passing by... Must be because I am having fun. I really am. This year is very different because I stay close to the beach and the yoga shala, so there are also many other yogis in the area and it is a lot of fun to be part of a small community of people with similar focus, interests, etc. The days start with the yoga practice, then a big breakfast, and after that I either stay home, read and relax or I go to the beach, and almost every time, there is other yoga people there and we chat for a while, have a chai at our favorite beach shacks, or we sometimes all go ... read more

Here I am again! Back in Goa! This place is addictive, and for a reason! Nice beach, great climate, nice places to stay, good restaurants, colorful markets, friendly people.... So after 2 nights sleeping in the train from Gujarat to Mumbai and then Mumbai to Goa, I came to Candolim, where I did yoga last year. It was great to drive back to a familiar area and recognize places and people. On my way to Candolim from the train station, my taxi driver said "shirt, shirt"... I said "no, I don't need a shirt". I thought he wanted to take me to a shirt shop somewhere where he would get commission and I really just wanted to find a place to stay and have a shower... But no, he meant he had to stop at his ... read more

Gujarat... A state not as well known to us Westerners as are other ones such as Rajasthan, Goa, Kashmir, etc... And it makes it very interesting because I can really feel like this is a more authentic indian place, where people are not as used to tourists as they are in more tourist-oriented places. It is not that remote, but still, it is far from the big markets you find in Goa, or the 10 page menus you see in restaurants trying to cater to everybody with american, italian, chinese and israeli food all in one place. Gujarat is very close to Pakistan with a mix of hindu and muslim cultures, a very dry and hot climate right now, and the same noisy organized chaos one can find everywhere in INdia!!! Same cows, same dogs, but ... read more
