We say it often: it is a small world. It truly is! Through my job in Nunavik, I had to contact someone who worked in the Torngat National Park, and after a 45 minute work-related discussion, we realized that we had met 14 years ago in Inuvik, NWT! Not only that, Angus had come to my dog yard to feed my dogs, and later in Whitehorse, I went with him to a store to buy a harness and a "backpack" for his dog and some metal snaps. Angus then worked in Gros Morne National Park. I had already planned to go to Gros Morne in the summer, but Angus convinced me (very easily!) that Gros Morne was an amazing place to visit in the winter too. That's all it took to start the planning process, and ... read more

What a great way to start a new year... spending 7 days in the backcountry, skiing from hut to hut in a beautiful mountaineous area, with 2 good friends! We left on December 30, 2-3 days after a good snow storm in Southern Quebec. We couldn't have had better conditions, and the sun was there for most of the trip. Cold, and often windy but the "Traversée de Charlevoix" is in the forest for the most part so we were sheltered and didn't suffered from the cold. As long as we kept going! The Traversée is considered by the Lonely Planet as one of the nicest treks in the world (Interestingly, this trip and the West Coast Trail, which I had the privilege to hike in May, are said to be the best 2 treks in ... read more

After a few weeks in the office, and thanks to one of my coworkers, I got the incredible privilege to join an expedition organized for a group of police cadets in one of our newly created national park: Kurrurjuaq Park. This park, at the Quebec-Labrador border protects part of the Torngat Mountains, and includes the highest peak of Quebec: Mont d'Iberville. I was obviously extremely excited to go there for many reasons: I always love to be in the field, it was a chance to see another beautiful park, to hike for 10 days and maybe get to the top of our highest peak in Quebec. But it was also exciting for another reason: as many people know, when I was a 10 year old girl, a man came to our classroom to talked to us ... read more

Waw, they call it a world-class trek and I have to agree... It is always better when I write a story right after it happened, but even if I have been back for 3 weeks now, I thought I had to share this one anyway. The West Coast Trail, on Vancouver Island, is an amazing adventure. It is something I wanted to do for more than 10 years and I happened to be in Victoria for a course. My friend Angela joined me there and on May 14, after stepping on the scale to find out that our packs weighed over 50 pounds each, we drove to Port Renfrew to start our journey. Before the start, we had to do an orientation session where they tell you about the dangers and challenges of the WCT. Very ... read more

I just came back a few days ago from an amazing trip in my own country! 3 of my colleagues and I skied from the crater in Pingualuit Park, Nunavik, back to the village of Kangiqsujuaq. Just finding dates when everybody was available prooved to be a challenge and then we had trouble booking our flight to the village as there was a paraski competition the same week and many people were flying to Kangiqsujuaq. Isabelle and I had to fly 2 days before Julie and Mélanie, which in the end was a good thing as it gave me more time to explore this amazing village of less than 500 inhabitants. Kangiqsujuaq means "large bay" (which we were to confirm eventually!) and the house were we stayed was right on the shore with a fantastic view ... read more

I am now back at home, in Kuujjuaq, after a few weeks in Guatemala. I didn't write much on my blog during the trip as I didn't want to spend time in front of a computer at all! But it was a nice trip and here are some of the stories and highlights... After I last posted something on the blog, the rain did not stop for another week or 10 days. It was amazingly humid and cold, not that 15 degrees is that cold for us northerners, but it is a very different story when you have no heating system in your house. Nothing dries, and it feels like your bones get cold too. I ended up getting a stomach flu for a few days and later a cold... So much for coming to the ... read more

I just arrived in Guatemala 2 days ago. RAiny season, that must be why it is raining. I can only laugh that I picked this destination because I wanted to go to a hot sunny place. Oh, I did read the fine prints but they said it would rain only a couple hours a day. Oh well, can;t complain. I just hope my hair will dry between now and next week. Antigua is a really nice city and of course I am just so happy to be traveling again. It;s funny that my brain seems to compare everything with India rather than my own country! So I arrived without too much trouble to this beautiful city, where I am taking Spanish lessons for a couple of weeks before traveling a bit outside of the ANtigua area. ... read more

One thing I was hoping for when I accepted the job in Kuujjuaq was to have the chance to explore the north and see amazing places. This week I was very lucky because some of my co-workers were going to Pingualuit Park by helicopter and it so happened that there was room on the chopper for me... All I had time to do before we left was grab my camera and my toothbrush (in case we wouldn't be able to return the same day) and we were on our way. The wind was very strong so we had to fly quite low. That was absolutely fantastic as this gave us a chance to see a lot of animals: we saw many groups of muskoxen, lots of caribou, snowy owls, geese, swans, and... even a polar bear! ... read more

After over a month of working in front of a computer on a big report, I finally had the chance to go out in the field. That was soooooo nice! The idea was to explore some areas of the future park on which we are currently working, to see what the potential was for hiking. In other words, 2 colleagues and I had the amazing opportunity to be dropped off by float plane somewhere on the shore of the George River, and from there we had to walk to a small mountain called Pyramide Mountain, from where we were going to be picked up a few days later. Waw! Can't beat it. I love that feeling of traveling with all what we need on our backs, walking in areas where maybe only some Inuit and Naskapis ... read more

Sometimes simple things are the best. Today, nothing fancy. Got up (zero degree as usual), had breakfast, fixed my bike, packed a lunch, a book, binoculars, camera. Then I took off, north of town. There is a road, not sure exactly how long it is, between 25 and 35 km according to people, but it is a great way of getting out of town. It was sunny when I left and it felt quite nice and warm. Kuujjuaq is really at the border between small trees and no trees. So as soon as you go north, pretty soon it is the toundra. So after a while, I stopped, parked my bike where there was a big rock and ended up spending the whole day at that place. It was one of the rare warm, sunny, nearly ... read more
