Since Sophie stayed over night with her cousin Samo I was free to go with Sami and Louisa to their friend Paul's villa by the sea for the day. Paul is one of Sami's partners in a project called El Rancho (www.elrancholebanon.com) and has a beautiful villa/condo by the sea. There were 3 large swimming pools and one kiddy pool beside the sea. However the red flags were out since it was so windy that day that we couldn't go swimming in the sea. It was a large gathering (approx 20) but we could have called a meeting of the UN. A couple of the people were Muslim (not only that but there were some Sunnis as well as Shiites represented there) and we were the Christian contingency and yet everyone got along! One of the ... read more

Sophie and I were invited to a cousins wedding on Sat the 5th. Weddings around here are very elaborate both for the bridal party as well as the guests. Sophie and I went to a hair salon close to the village of Kharhoura to get our hair done. How wonderful to have one person shampoo your hair, another blow dry it until almost dry and the head stylist uses the round brushes to style it while the other girl holds the blow dryer for him! All this for $5 American dollars! Afterwards we went back to the village to get ready. The bride was from the village so she was busy getting pictures taken in the gardens around the village. It was very hot and she had a very beautiful elaborate dress on but she continued ... read more

On Friday the 4th, Sophie and I traveled to the village of Kharfoura which is north of Beirut but south of Tripoli. The neighbors of Jemal had a luncheon for us outside (Eddie's sister in law who is widowed due to her husband being killed in the '82 war) Here are photos from that. ... read more

Happy 4th of July to all my friends back in the States! Sophie and I slept in and then went to the club to swim. We ended up calling her friend Rosie from the States who is spending the summer with her family visiting her grandparents in Beyrouth (as they spell it around here), to come swimming with us. We had a fun day and Sophie ended up swimming for 6 hours! Later Eddie's friends Lena and Laudi brought dinner to our house that they had prepared all day. They brought kibbeh neighe (like steak tarar) especially for Sophie. She was in heaven. She was so excited that she had to take a picture of it! So even though she was very tired (dinner starts around 10 pm here!) she stayed up just for that! From ... read more

We had arranged for a taxi driver to pick us up from our hotel on Wed morning to take us to the airport but I wasn't sure if he would show up or not so I ended up asking the hotel to call for one. That's when the fun began. Because my taxi driver showed up the concierge didn't want me to take it because as I found out later they get paid $15 euros for each driver they call. They practically got into a fist fight in front of us before I finally just told my driver that we should go and the concierge should cancel the other car. After all that excitement it was pretty calm getting through security at the airport. We had an extra seat beside us so Sophie ended up sleeping ... read more

Europe » France July 1st 2008

Sophie and I left Minneapolis on Sat afternoon at 3:30 and after having a flight delay due to someone throwing luggage into the cargo door and denting it, we were on our way. We had tail winds that helped us arriving on time in Paris at 7 am. Since we had a crying baby a few rows back from us neither one of us slept much on the plane. I had grand thoughts of taking the train into the city after we landed but by the time we both lugged around our 2 pcs of luggage and found the place to buy train tickets the thought of enduring anymore was too much for us. So I flagged down a taxi and away we went into Paris to the Aviatic hotel. Honestly, it was a lot further ... read more

So, here I am again, looking forward to another adventure. Sophie and I leave in 2 days to travel first to Paris for 3 days and then onto Beirut for 10 days. I'm hoping to have internet connection to keep you loyal call me crazy followers up to date on what's happening to me. I'm apprehensive at this point probably because I don't have a thing packed yet for either Sophie or I but it will all have to come together by Sat afternoon. I'm looking forward to this adventure!... read more

Unfortunately even though I had a Dr's report stating that I needed to be upgraded due to my physical condition, the gate agent wouldn't allow it. I think she didn't know what "saccrum" meant...just my luck. So I ended up wtih 3 seats to myself towards the back of the plane and with one ambien and a vicodein I didn't wake up until we landed in Amsterdam. Now its just an eternal wait here (5 hours) before getting onto the next plane. I did a little shopping but one can only walk around so much before falling asleep standing up! Once I get home I will need to get an xray of my jaw and saccrum region per Dr. Catherine. It really was a thrill to meet Dr Catherine Hamlin and have her audiograph my book. ... read more

As Paul Harvey would say...and now the rest of the story.....When I wrote to you about going to Wenchi I purposely left off a part of that trip. After eating dinner in Weslio we were about 30 min out of town when I looked up and a small boy ran directly in front of our minibus. The driver instinctively swerved to miss him or we would have killed him on impact. The driver cranked the wheel as hard as he could to the right and we plunged into a ditch at a very high rate of speed, went up an embankment and then hit a fence. The driver had his seatbelt on but unfortunately there weren't any seatbelts in the seats that Lauren (the English teacher from the midwife college) and I were sitting in. Lauren ... read more

Well it sounds like I picked a good time not to be in MN right now from everyone's comments about how cold it is back there. For the most part it starts out a little cool in the mornings here and then by the afternoon it is sunny and in the mid to high 60s. I was over at the hospital this afternoon and I got a chance to just hang out with some of the women (girls really when you figure that some of them are as young as 13 or 14!). In Ethiopia there are close to 80 languages spoken so as you can figure there was quite a bit of a language barrier for us. However one thing is universal for them and that is pictures. I brought out the Christmas card that ... read more
